Multiple dog owners are dealing with their dogs scratching themselves, often at the base of the tail. Financial constraints prevent some from continuing preventative medication, leading to scabs and requiring the use of cones, which the dogs dislike.

The vet suggested this might be an allergy, which is common in older dogs so to switch his food and wait for winter to come but I feel like he is scratching more and more. We switched him to grain-free food a month ago, but we haven't noticed any improvement and he seems to have gotten worse (more dry flakes). He doesn't have any hair loss (I just parte”
“I have a seven-year-old Shih Tzu that has been itching for months. I’ve changed his diet, tried creams, changed shampoos, he’s on flea and tick medicine. I brought him to the vet and they put them on a course of antibiotics. I finally resorted to Apoquel and he is on his third month. The itching continues and he is suffering. He’s losing patches of hair permanently I fear. Today I noticed new crusty scabs all over his back that are flaking. It is like cradle cap. I want to attach a photo, but I’”
“My dog is about 18 months, m collie/pit/dachshund mix. I’ve had him for almost 7 months. From the first week I brought him home, I noticed his aversion to having his paws touched, and have been working tirelessly and consistently with treating and desensitizing for soft touching, firmer handling, and using tools like trimmers and paw wipes. His paws were not in great condition when he came home, and because it’s been such a slow process trying to get him ok with touching, they are kind of just g”

“Hi there, I've finally reached the point where I need to ask Reddit how to help my dog. He's a 5 year old blue staffy, and he is constantly licking his paws, itching his face, sometimes until it bleeds. We've changed his food from chicken and pork at the vets advice, we haven't been giving him any treats to try and stop it, and we've tried to approach the vet but they're saying they need to sedate him to run tests. We're running out of ideas fast, and we're not su”
“Writing this because I feel so bad for my 15 lb rat terrier; she’s been licking/biting on her dew claw for a couple of days. She’s walking normally, though occasionally will stop to nip on her dew claw; can’t see or feel any obvious reason. I thought maybe an insect sting, or a mosquito bite? It’s obvious she’s either in pain or, well, I don’t know what. My Vet is pretty useless, so I’m asking for direction on what I should ask if I get her into a different Vet. submitted by /u/Marau”
“Hi everyone! ( I am not seeking medical advice or diagnoses ) My dog has been struggling with scratching for the first time this summer. He was on Ap the last few months but due to financial constraints this month I'm not able to get it again and weened him off. He was okay for about a week until I noticed a bit of small scabs at the base of his tail so I assume he's been biting there. I got him a cone but it's been storming non stop where I am and he's terrified of them so I fee”
“I don’t know what to do with my dog. Gaba/Traz isn’t working. She’s been so agitated. Our first shot is 10/21. Before starting heartworm treatment, my dog struggled to learn to sleep outside of her crate. She could settle on her place mat if I commanded her to, or sometimes she’d choose it herself while I was doing chores. There was no way she’d settle if we didn’t take a long walk that day, which we usually walked 2-3 miles per day before diagnosis. That being said, this has been so hard with e”
