“The official announcement says the change began rolling out globally on August 24, not that every old number would visibly jump at midnight. A public view now counts when playback begins from the first frame. The older, stricter measure remains as Engaged views in Analytics > Advanced Mode, and YouTube says earnings still use engaged metrics. “Views doesn’t really matter in this scenario if they aren’t subscribing or having engaged watch hours. They still report the engaged number, it didn’t completely go away in your analytics. I suggest you start reading YouTube’s official blog posts that covers every change they do. Nothing better than straight from the source itself.”

“For monetization to be meaningful in any way, you need to get way more than 4k or even 8k watch hours annually. The same for Shorts. What this does do is make it harder to monetize for channels that rely on really high frequency but low views content, spread out over a huge number of channels, which all add up to a decent profit in aggregate. Who does that? The AI slop farms.”

“for shorts the requirement is a lot harder, but for long-form views I am literally at less than 200 subscribers but I've already hit 4k watch hours LOL If your channel doesn't even hit 8k hours in a whole freaking year, the money it would be making is like 30 euros per month at best”
