Calibre Web Won't Sync Reading Progress Automatically
Dedicated readers, particularly those using eReaders and audiobooks, are frustrated by the lack of seamless, self-hosted solutions for syncing progress, managing libraries, and automating workflows. They desire a unified system that integrates reading and listening experiences, handles both ebook and audiobook formats, and offers greater control over their data. Current options are fragmented, require technical expertise, and often lack essential features.

“Are you doing anything for ebooks? Running calibre on mine but wondering what others do.”
“So right now I have BookOrbit and Grimmory running. BookOrbit has a slightly better UI and is easier for my wife to access audiobooks, otherwise I would ditch it and just keep Grimmory, I read about all the drama and have read BookOrbit's developer owning up to his previous drama, I was not in the scene when all that happened, but I am very careful, I have multiple copies of my eBooks and audiobooks so if BookOrbit goes rouge, I can pull the plug and not loose anything.”
“sounds like the bookshelf view in Calibre? https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/en/gui.html#id32 your idea is more purposebuilt”
Better late than never LMAO but both look cool i will look into them! thx for sharing
“You have now two options for wearOS: https://www.reddit.com/r/audiobookshelf/comments/1wspr6n/audiobookshelf_for_wearos_nortlinos_my_niche/ https://www.reddit.com/r/audiobookshelf/comments/1wph18s/new_native_wear_os_app/”
“I'm actually okay with the mobile app. There's only been a few errors that I couldn't figure out on my own, but they were generic enough (SSL certs, unsupported format, etc). I think Shelfmark came up once or twice when looking at buidling this pipeline. If BookOrbit's inregration between requests and Prowlarr fails, this might be the next one.”
“Hello! I started my self hosting journey with Plex many moons ago, and have gotten into ebook and audiobooks since becoming a parent. I spun up Sonarr and Radarr for getting titles on Plex, and it's spoiled me for automating searches and content acquisition. I'm turning to the community because AI has led me down several rabbit holes, and some apps come close but they are either clunky, missing functionality or unintuitive. I'm trying to replicate the Plex experience for media servin”

“What's your idea? Add support for monitoring external reading lists or shelves and automatically creating BookOrbit Requests when new books are added. My immediate use case is Goodreads public shelves, particularly "Want to Read". I currently use LazyLibrarian to monitor several Goodreads users — for example my own shelf, family members, and public reading lists. When one of those users adds a book, it enters the acquisition workflow without me having to continually search for new books manually”
“Seems great and I am curious to get my hands on it. But it won’t let met activate it… any idea why?”
“Personally, I don’t like either but a lot of people asked for it, so... I prefer downloading my books and reading them offline.”
“book streaming sounds like a great way to find out exactly how slow my wifi is lol”
“Hey everyone! I just wanted to share EverReed here. It’s been out for a few months now, and one of its main features is support for personal ebook libraries through OPDS. You can connect your existing OPDS server and access your books in it without having to move your library over. I’ve been testing it with setups like Calibre, Kavita, and Komga. It also handles the other side of your reading library — keeping track of books and series, reading progress, and what you want to read next. I am open”
“What's your idea? Is there a way to add a new menu option to the plugin to do a manual reading session import into the koreader sqlite file? What problem does it solve? This would provide those who say are away for a few days but are reading on their phones or other devices to then sync up to their main ereader. While it already syncs books, sessions, progress and the like it would then preserve the reading streaks and calendar views of when you read books. Other issue is that when reading betwe”
“It really has a beautiful UI and works really well for me for ebooks and audiobooks.”
“Thanks, I have to check it out - got a kobo and have been looking for the ideal solution. Tried calibre-web-automated so far, but was looking into Kavita, lazylibrarian, etc”
“I recently added Calibre NextGen to my homeserver and it’s really cool because I can press sync on my kobo and all the books I add to my library will sync wirelessly to my eReader.”
“Yep! We also try to sync up your progress in both formats. I haven’t been able to get it to work as well as something like audible, but it’s done pretty well for us!”
“I wanted to add my self hosted ebook OPDS catalog as a shelf, but Bookshelf always reports as there being nothing there. This is despite this OPDS catalog working totally fine in KOReader;'s native OPDS catalog browser. Bookshelf v5.1.2 KoReader 2025.10 What happens: Adding the catalogue as a shelf empty shelf. No category tiles (Unread, Recent, Authors etc.) ever appear, so there's nothing to drill into. Expected: The same catalogue works in KOReader's built in OPDS browser on the same device:”
“Concordance: keep your place between an ebook and its audiobook (KOReader + Calibre-Web-Automated + Audiobookshelf) I read on a Kobo and listen in the car, and I kept losing my place between the two. Whispersync solves this if you buy everything from Amazon. I don't, so I spent a while building something that does it for a self-hosted stack. Read a few chapters on the Kobo, open the audiobook, and it starts just before where you stopped. Listen on a walk, open the book again, and KOReader of”
“Wondering what the easiest solution to my problem is. Shelfmark for ebooks has not really been working for me lately, so switching to myanonymouse. I can categorise torrents them as either mam-book or mam-audiobook, however how do I automate this to work with audiobooks to go to audiobookshelf library and ebooks to go to Calibre Web Automated? With calibre web automated the ingest folder destroys the file, so I can’t hard link can I? It seems it’s easier to hard link audiobooks but I still need”
Have you tried using SideStore? Might help you with that
Hey! It would be awesome if you could add a percentage completion indicator for audiobooks. It might sound like a minor tweak, but seeing your progress as a percentage is super useful…
“linkding does the full text search if you enable it, and it can fetch snapshots for offline copies. been on it for a year and it just works”
“I really hope this project sticks around and does not face the same fate as Booklore, we have been ditched once, trust doesn’t come easy. Grimmory refused to accept my patch for kobo annotation sync and I have to maintain my own fork for it. Will give Bookorbit a try as it has all the Kobo related features I maintain on my own for Grimmory. The move away from Java is compelling as well.”
“I wish we could get that on iOS. I know about the port someone made but re upping it every week is pretty annoying.”
“For iOS, Readest is pretty popular right now. You’ll need to make an account but you don’t need to subscribe to anything.”
“That’s a really interesting idea, I’m going to look into it. Connecting Audiobookshelf and Komga through the alignment feature could be pretty useful. Thanks for suggesting it”
“I don’t have a widows pc but this seems like something they would work well on a container. I use audio book shelf and komga and they both have APIs, I’ve always thought they should be able to talk to each other”

“I feel like this shouldn’t be too difficult, particularly with the API being so well documented. I just don’t have the programming chops to do it. Anyone feel up to looking into it? https://api.audiobookshelf.org/ Than…”
“Get an android based ereader like a boox go 7. use Calibre Web to sync it and manage the books.”
“Would it be possible to add Goodreads support to Bookshelf, similar to the existing Hardcover integration? There is already a KOReader plugin that handles Goodreads syncing: https://github.com/gkgangavarapu/goodreadskosync Ideally, Bookshelf could detect it and expose Goodreads linking, status, progress and ratings inside the Bookshelf UI, without reimplementing Goodreads support itself.”
“Mmmm I think that I have to install it for my wife 😂 is it easy to add books through a smartphone ? Maybe with a pic if the ISBN code?”
Great, I am going to try it out soon and give some feedback
“tbh, I use Audiobookshelf for both ebooks and audiobooks. You can use an ABS app that has an ereader included (Absorb or AudioBooth) and there are .koplugins for downloading books from ABS on KOReader”
“Interesting feature. A solid *arr alternative for ebooks is sorely needed. A small request to also support rtorrent or alternatively download the torrent to a specified folder that can be a watch folder for a torrent client?”
“Not if I expand my library from 50osh books to 100k in one go.... Anyway, I do recommend bookorbit - I was just giving a (to me) funny argument for it. Also, I found the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/1tqia6s/i_benchmarked_6_selfhosted_book_server_apps_up_to/”
“If all you need is progress syncing I'd look into selfhosting koreader sync with koreader on your devices. Works very well. https://github.com/koreader/koreader-sync-server https://github.com/koreader/koreader”
“i've found shelfmark & simliar solutions much better than any readarr-esque options. books are just different things to tv / movies and (for me) they require a more indivdual and curated approach which the arrs arent really based around. u/WittyAd172 try shelfmark and just point its download folder at your BO book dock folder. it works seamlessly for me and I've stopped having to use calibre”
“I'm still looking for something light without database, doesn't have a lot of books but need progress syncing at least”
“thanks! i stopped and restarted it and changed that - something worked! Now i'm fighting it to do hardlinks, it keeps saying the system refused them, i have no idea why x.x”
“Audiobookshelf supports libraries with ebook only entries, and these show up in Lissen but the app simply shows them as an audiobook with 0 chapters. I would like an option to filter the library to hide ebook only entries so that only audiobooks are displayed.”
“Was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Bookbridge sync engine. I'm self hosting ABS and Bookbridge on a server that's not currently on my home network, so I'm using tailscale on my kindle (8th Gen). When entering the my server IP and credentials into progress sync on koreader, I get an unknown server error. Tried using the proxy mode for Kual tailscale but it didn't work. lmk if I can provide any more info. submitted by /u/boochwinder [link] [commen”
“Yes sir. They are linked because BookOrbit can register when I try to update from the Kobo, but I get a sync failed on my Kobo and books on my BookOrbit collection appear on the Kobo, but they fail to be downloaded.”
“Following up on the direction you noted in 257 — building proper native integrations with external platforms rather than a generic bot API — I'd like to propose a Hardcover "Want to Read" auto sync . What it does: periodically reads the authenticated user's Hardcover "Want to Read" shelf ( user books where status id: 1 ) via the GraphQL API Shelfarr already talks to, and creates a request for each new book. Because each shelf entry carries a Hardcover book id, the work id ( hardcover:<id ) is kn”
“i went the api route and made syncing work directly from playback and scrobbing. it works for bookorbit right now, haven't finished with grimmory yet. works on all media so far. tested epub, pdf, cbz, cbr, m4bs. then i let bookorbit sync to hardcover.”
“I import the audio book and ebook into a self hosted storyteller server. It creates a read along version. My "whispersync" server see it, runs a bunch of clean up operations on the audiobook, strips out a syncmap.json, and then dumps the files into a folder that grimmory monitors for imports. The android app then allows an import of the ayncmap and then keeps your two versions synced up as you read. At this point the whole process is automated. The only thing I need to do is import int”
“Booklore has replaced Grimmory, cwa, highlighsync etc for me. Its great, updates seems to bring actual worthwhile updates and i love the koreader plugin”
