Music Lovers Building Self-Hosted Spotify

Users are frustrated with existing music streaming services (Spotify, YouTube Music, etc.) and are actively exploring self-hosted solutions. The core pain is a lack of robust music discovery, metadata management, and collaborative listening features within these self-hosted options, leading to complex setups and usability issues.

Currently, the controls and the album art stay on screen all the time during music playback. It would be nice if there was a way to hide them so we could enjoy some of the more 'visual' visualizers.

A few months back I was building something completely unrelated and needed one small thing: the Spotify soundtrack for a specific movie. Not the score, not "similar music" — the actual soundtrack playlist for that title. Every option I found had the same gap. TMDB and OMDb give you cast, posters, ratings, release dates — genuinely great APIs, but zero music data. Every "listen to the soundtrack" link you've ever seen on a movie blog washand-curated by someone who went and

When I'm on the library view of an artist I would like to be able to search for more albums of that artist directly. Workaround is to go to search, type the name of the artist, select the correct result and only then can I see more albums.

MusicGrabber works very well for this. It keeps Spotify playlists entirely in sync with your local playlist and downloads/removes songs automatically. It can use slskd, YouTube and other sources. Very good tool. Also the developer reacts very quickly on bug reports.

Hi, Very new to all this. I have around 3000 songs on Spotify from 1000 different artists that I would like to download on my server from Soulseek. I'm currently running Lidarr with Tubifarry and slskd in a Docker compose. As you probably all know, when you upload your Spotify playlist to Lidarr, you can't download just one song, it downloads the whole album. I'm looking for an alternative where I could upload my playlist and it would download the songs individually on slskd. I have

My good man, how long would it take to scan my 65k albums? Is there an offline option for the MusicBrainz database? Do you plan to support downloads via Tiddl or Tidarr, or provide other Tidal support? As soon as I get my server back up and running, this is the first new service I’ll launch.

I’m building my library from scratch so this tool has been incredibly helpful. But with big library it can take a long time to process musicbrainz tags given the public instance has 1req/s limit. If there was an option to select self hosted one and get higher rates that’ll be great. I know this is niche and not everyone would need it. But if there’s config I can set that’ll be good enough.

Hi there Paul and Argie. I'm a huge fan of Arpeggi and use it daily as my music player from my Navidrome. The player works fantastic. My only and main struggle with this app is that the lack of being able to play songs through siri voice control. Adding this to the app itself would make it an absolute 10/10 for me personally as it would allow me to drive in my car to work, which is an hour commute, and control the music fully by voice. Wanted to share a project in case it's useful here. Mirasonic is a Subsonic-API server whose backend is YouTube Music instead of a local file collection. Any Subsonic client works unchanged — search, browse by artist/album, playlists, stars. Playlists and starred tracks are stored in a local SQLite file on the server, so they persist and back up with a single cp . Streaming is done by resolving with yt-dlp and repacking the bytes as ADTS; nothing is cached to disk. No Google account or cooki

if i tasked it with "create spotify" I'd need that much.asking it to "disassemble Spotify and find out the minimal code path needed to play a song" is much more in reach. I don't need it to oneshot it. Music Assistant can use your navidrome library as a music source. It can synchronize playback across all connected playback devices. I have not used PoE speakers before, so I cannot speak to how easy it would be to add them, but it seems pretty straight forward so long as they support a standard protocal like DLNA or bluesound etc. I use a Yamaha network receiver, and the moment it was connected to the network, music assistant picked it up and I was able to play music from the connected speakers

r/selfhosted7d ago

That’s a great idea. I was going to do something similar to help tag untagged songs. Let us add custom metadata with trust rankings so we can naturally and gradually fill an entire library in with its metadata

r/webdev7d ago

i've always wanted a streaming service that treats metadata like a first-class citizen. like let me tag my own tracks with custom fields and build smart playlists off those. spotify's "mood" playlists are fine but they're guessing, i want to define my own rules also the crossfade on spotify is way too basic, give me a proper adjustable gapless playback with real crossfade timing options. feels like such a solved problem from the ipod days that nobody bothers with anymore

r/webdev7d ago

First of all, thank you for developing this amazing app! I've recently started using InternetRadio and I'm really enjoying the experience. To make the app even better, I'd like to suggest two features/enhancements: 1. Volume Boost (Up to 200%) Problem: Some radio stations naturally have very low output audio compared to system audio levels. Proposed Solution: Introduce an extra volume boost option up to 200%. Implementation Idea: Add a setting to manually toggle "Volume Booster" on/off. Or , all

r/selfhosted8d ago

I am a long-time Spotify user, with tons of albums saved but never with a proper way to manage it: display genres, see what I've already listened, and many other things. I was finally able to bring to life the idea on how to handle the tons of music and it is named [Albums Vault]( https://codefloe.com/rabc/albumsvault/ ). It is a macOS app built with Tauri + Rust, with plans to release to more platforms soon. Since Spotify now restricts the creation of apps keys, it works in a BYOK: at first

r/SideProject8d ago

cool. testing it right now. a bit slow (got 6000+ files), but it's running on my server so i can leave it to do its thing lol from what i understand, it tags by album country (or am I getting it wrong?). would be nice if it could tag by track individually (e.g., the persona 5 sountrack has both English and instrumental songs, but it's released in Japan). no idea how to implement something like that, though

r/selfhosted8d ago

I'd highly suggest setting this up - most music players / servers can be setup to do this automatically for you. both sites will track your listens over time and then start giving you recommendations / suggested playlists.

How do y'all get your music?

r/selfhosted9d ago

If you have Plex, then you already have solution in place. Get Spotiflac Next (pay 5 euro once) and pull all your Spotify music in Flac. Then get Curatorr and it will create smart playlists for you. It can also pull your Spotify playlists if you want. Alternatively you can pull them with Soundiiz, but it's 5 euro a month (you probably need just one month though). If you don't have Plex, then use Navidrome.

r/selfhosted9d ago

I have written a script that checks when I add a song on a YouTube/SoundCloud playlist and automatically downloads it to my library And for similar tracks/playlist mixes I use the audiomuse plugin For recommendations I use last.fm and listenbrainz

r/selfhosted9d ago

Did this exact thing a couple years ago and never looked back. Navidrome handles the streaming and it's solid. One thing people skip: if your friends aren't on your network, don't port-forward your home box, just use tailscale or a cheap VPS. Export your spotify playlist before you switch and the scanner chews through 8k songs in a night easy. Family plan dies, everyone gets their own account, done.

r/selfhosted9d ago

My recomendarions are more niche though, so i would say yes, i think it depends alot of how you build you're playlist, i started adding a lot of underground nu-metal bands and then spotify started recomending me more underground nu-metal songs

r/selfhosted9d ago

are they really? I'm tired of spotify always recommending the same "popular" songs in y style. Whereas some sea-sailing sites have led me to many discoveries over the years I wouldn't have gotten from spotify truly, their recommendation engine is much much worse than what it used to be several years ago

r/selfhosted9d ago

Ahh, this is what I wanted. So I actually set up sonobarr + navidrome and some other containers to try and recommend me good music. I use a torrent type of service (private trackers) for audio books and it worms really well I think SoulSeek would have replaced my liked songs. But I would have had issues finding new music. I listen to Spotify probably almost 40 hours a week. At 2 minutes a song that's 1200 individual songs. The varity of content there is too much compared to any other form of

r/selfhosted9d ago

I don't know, my way of consuming music seems different from yours, from what I've read. I've always preferred having the music I know I like downloaded locally, and since I started using Navidrome I simply have the same thing, only centralized on my server so that everything is synchronized in case I add something new, but if you like Spotify's algorithm there's not much you can do.

r/selfhosted9d ago

So i have 7891 songs on my "playlist" on spotify, I pay 2,30€/m for spotify 28€ year, I'm in a family with other 6 friends and it went fine, but it's a pain in the ass when you're the main man (me) I wanted a good alternative to this. submitted by /u/Big-Spend-5791 [link] [comments]
