HVAC filters don't fit the slot

“The floor of our HVAC closet is recessed below the floor of the room that it is in. This makes it impossible to put the prescribed filter (Ultravation 91-005, 16x25x5) into the cabinet. The installer's solution (rather than to design the install in a way that could accommodate…”

Users report HVAC air filters either not fitting the designated slot or being too loose, leading to poor filtration and potential system inefficiency. Some mention difficulty finding the correct size at hardware stores.

“My unit takes a lovely 27x21x1 air filter or a 2” or 3”. I would love to find a fiberglass 27x21x1 filter that is relatively inexpensive just a few dollars per filter but can’t find one for the life of me. I have no interest in a merv 8. Anyone can point me in the direction of where I can find a fiberglass this size? submitted by /u/ElkInteresting5739 [link] [comments]”

“Our house uses 12x30x1, 14x24x1, and 14x14x1 air filters for the return air vents. We’ve been buying 3M Filtrete filters, but only the 14x24x1 fits properly - the other two sizes are too large for their frames. An HVAC technician told me that actual filter dimensions can vary between manufacturers, even when the labeled sizes are the same. I’m now looking for a brand whose filters tend to run slightly smaller. In your experience, is there a real difference between brands? If so, which manufactur”

“Im trying to change the filter on my furnace since I’ve lived here about a year how. I can’t for the life of me figure out where it is located. The furnace is in a cramped space which does not help. “I bought new home about 2 years ago and have just been using HVAC filters old owners have been using which is this Filterbuy 18x22x1 MERV 8 filters. I also got a home inspection when i bought and guy looked at HVAC as well. I am wondering though why should the filter stick out like this. It sticks out about 6 inches from top and about 1 inch from each side. Should I buy like a 20x16x1 air filter instead then. HVAC is working fine. submitted by /u/Hot_Butterscotch8682 [link] [co”

“I recently moved into a house, and the HVAC filters are thick box type. I’m trying to replace this one as it’s pretty dirty, but the opening is facing a wall. Any suggestions aside from bending/destroying the filters on how to replace it? It seems like the most simple task but I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something. submitted by /u/Muddy_Rubbers [link] [comments]”

“Hey, all. I’m looking for a prefabricated filter box that can accept at minimum 2” filters for my furnace. I’ve been searching on and off online for a couple weeks now, and I’m struggling to find an exact fit for my old return duct. Either my duct size is outdated, or I’m reading the schematics wrong or they’re just not detailed properly for the products I’ve been seeing online. I know I can make one, but I’d prefer to buy one if they’re available anywhere. Dimensions are in the photos. Outer di”

“Open downflow furnace front, two filters (too dark to see) above the fan in a V arrangement The return duct above the filters is about an inch out of alignment Left filter in the central tray above the fan, not seated in its well. Right filter in the central tray above the fan, seated in its well ~1/8 inch gap between left filter and duct wall ~1/8 inch gap between right filter and duct wall I have an old downflow furnace that has two filters in a V-arrangement above the fan, which don't see”

It seems like the filter should be held in place the metal lip that Ive circles in blue. The metal lip is at least an inch or two outside of the red rectangle but thats a bit hard to see in the picture. The issue is there is nothing similar in the back that hold the filter in place. my thinking”

“Hello, sorry if someone asked this before but I couldn’t find a similar post, my unit has 2 air filters to the left and right above it. Do I need both slots? They are the same size and how do I know which direction or one I should use if only one is required? submitted by /u/VietnaTexan [link] [comments]”

“My HVAC unit is behind this wall. It is accessed by a closet in the garage on the other side. The left filtered intake is like half sealed off with insulation so it only pulls air in through the right half of the left filter. The right filter is totally open (pictured). It’s just an open space in there behind the filters. Is this right? Is this going to mess with my efficiency? Looking up is the unit in the closet, I’m assuming that’s the air handler? This is our first home and I’ve only recentl”

“Hello, I just moved into my new place and trying to figure out how this ac filter works. The size I was left with was 20x25x1, but as you can see the filter does not sit correctly in the tray at the bottom, I have to balance it a little bit to make it stay. The third photo is after the ac unit goes off, as you can see the filter falls off from the tray. I measured the bottom tray to 21 in. across and 25 in. deep. The instruction book says 25x20 for the filter so I don't get why it seems so s”

“Hey hvac community. A little help here please! Trying to figure out what size filter to use. “The filter slot on my unit faces towards a wall which makes inserting a 16x25x4 filter difficult. I currently have to bend the furnace into an accordion to get it to bend into the slot. If I don’t then the filter will extend to far out that I can’t insert it into slot. I attached a vid. Besides having a hvac company come out and fix the layout, what else can I do to fix this. Is it even an issue to bend the filter to fit? Thank you! submitted by /u/xXLeRedditArmyXx [link] [comm”

“I have a 20x25x1 inch filter housing on the return for my HVAC but immediately there is this 2x4. That doesnt seem helpful. There is also a slight gap that I feel like it pulls air from the inside of that wall. My AC tries to pull the filter inward. I put in a Merv 5 to see if that made a difference over an 8 and it still pulls and whines. As a test found a 2" thick filter to try and that helped the noise. So I am considering going to a housing that holds the 2 inch filter properly. But ide”

“As the title states, we've got a garage-installed York TGLS080C16MP11B furnace in an upflow configuration, which appears to be improperly installed. There are no provisions for a proper 20x25" (or any) air filter to be held. I've tried to install a 20x20x1" filter, but the only way to install it is by opening the furnace door and dropping it in, which doesn't hold it in. I believe it's been like this for over a decade. I've reviewed the York manual for the TGLS inst”

Hey all, I posted about this is another thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/hvacadvice/comments/1vtrtrh/comment/p4vsetp/?screen_view_count=6&ext-referrer=DIRECT I couldn't find anything between 20x20x2 and 20x22x2 so I just took the loss and bought one of each to see…

“We've lived here for years but this has always bothered me. Should the gap in front of my filter be this large? It uses a 16x25x1 filter, and I bought a 16x25x2 once just to confirm that it will not fit (surprise, it won't). Without a filter the gap is somewhere between 1.5" and 1.75". It works, and the filter is definitely catching things, but the highest levels of the home have always struggled with proper air flow and I can't help thinking it's because the return sid”

“Hello I know this is probably a dumb question but I would like to know if anyone knows how to get the right fit for a filter. The one in my house is old and not the new style filter type. I get to measure Length and width, and then thickness but the old filter is a bit large than where a new style would fit. I get its kind of hard to tell so I took pictures. I thought the filter would slide from the top of the unit, not the bottom. Unless i only measure one side of the blue filter where it folds”

“For the past few years I was changing my HVAC filters with 20x20x1s, but they were always kind of small in there and I recently saw that my flap cover told me the size it takes is 20x22x1, and that using smaller filters could cause damage so I bought some 20x22x1s... but they were too big. They stick out those extra inches. I was able to get the filter in but it's bent a bit which isn't right. I'm going back to the store this weekend to buy a new one, but now I'm just confused. I”

“So uh figured out recently this unit doesn't have a filter, is it okay to put a filter right underneath the blower and make a bracket for it so it doesn't get sucked into it? There is a 2x4 unfortunately in the way to put it outside the metal furnace enclosure in the return air panned ductwork, so thinking I make a custom bracket with metal or plastic to hold the filter in place submitted by /u/Ok_Cut_4964 [link] [comments]”

I fixed the "door" tighter as the only thing keeping it close was the circled hook, also kinda loose. The filter goes in loose, is it the right size? I don't see 1 1/2" filters at HD, that might fit. I don't think that a 2" will fit given the piec”
