Background Check Forms Don't Fit Gig Workers
Job applicants are experiencing significant frustration and anxiety dealing with third-party background check vendors. Common issues include inflexible forms, difficulty representing non-traditional employment (gig work, 1099), inaccurate information, and slow/unresponsive vendor support, creating delays and uncertainty in the hiring process.

“pretty standard but slow, they use a legit third party system so any gap or weird thing in work history gets flagged and they ask for docs, major issues are felonies, fraud stuff, messed up credit for some roles, and lying anywhere”

“TL;DR: I’m a lawyer and helped a friend through a First Advantage / Sterling background check after he received a pre-adverse action notice over a misdemeanor evading arrest/detention conviction from a few years ago. He responded honestly, took responsibility, explained the circumstances and why the conduct wasn’t particularly relevant to the remote, non-driving job. He was cleared and got the job. 🎉 Posting this because we spent a lot of time searching Reddit for other people’s experiences, an”
“Hello everyone, I have received an offer at a firm and was wondering if anyone had any insights on the timeline of a Thuro background check (if you’ve completed one through Thuro in the past). Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/Ill_Guarantee8041 [link] [comments]”
“I don't know what state you are in, but in California if you get a new job you just show what you earned at your first week or two, and say you don't need a new form (if you get them by mail). Also, and this is California, it is a one week waiting period, so even if you are only out of work for two weeks you still get a week's benefits. That is, apply today, next week is your waiting period, the week after you are eligible for benefits.”
“So obviously I don't want this new job to contact my current employer and they are doing a background check through Thuro. I promise you while filling out this form that there was no box to say no to contacting my current employer but when I printed it out the box was there without an answer typed in. It had an asterisk so if i somehow missed it after checking it over three times it probably would have flagged it as missing a required field but nevertheless I am lowkey freaking out. Should I”

“it was nobody's fault Of course it's somebody's fault. Who's enforcing it? How did you get to that spot without this rule getting considered? How did you even get hired if your team is all government-facing? How would you explain this situation to recruiters/interviewers? The truth. You were performing well until someone noticed that clause. And since their company is not bound by the same restrictions, you should be able to go back doing what you love.”
“OP took the drug test and went through the pre-employment process. That’s basically like being told, “Congratulations, you bought the car,” then showing up for the keys and finding out the car isn’t there anymore. I’m 50/50 on the recruiter because at least the dude had the balls to reach out instead of ghosting OP. But otherwise, I don’t see anything particularly wrong with OP’s attitude. And everyone clutching their pearls about “professionalism” can kiss my ass. Candidates are allowed to be p”

“I had about 2.5 years of unpaid Research Assistant experience with a professor in my undergraduate department at a university in my home country in Asia. This was after I completed my undergraduate degree, and it ended about 5 years ago. On my resume, I listed it as: Research Assistant, Department X, University Y The research was real, and I have an experience certificate from my former supervisor and also paper. However, the role was unpaid and did not go through the university’s HR system. My”
“Been offered a job few months ago. accepted and stuck at pre-employment review. I have submitted all docs and resigned from my previous job after being on a long leave. that job was toxic and when I called out discrimination and aggressive behaviour towards me at workplace they turned super hostile to get of their responsibility and began retaliating. I ended up quitting and grabbed another job offer. but now it's stuck in checks and not proceeding. I have already lost another job offer beca”
“I have a HireRight background check coming up. And I have couple of doubts. I worked for my family’s business abroad before starting my master’s and continued as an advisor during my studies in the U.S. on an international student visa. I wasn’t formally paid, as it was a family business, and the business closed a few months ago. Should I list the full period, including my time in the U.S. as an advisor, or only the period before my master’s? Also, how do they verify such an experience, by conta”
“Hi all, On the waiting list, was previously employed by Amazon Fresh for 6 months then COVID hit and I didn’t go back, was in good standing when I resigned. Will that help me get through the wait list sooner? Thanks for any information. submitted by /u/Dry_Economist4470 [link] [comments]”
“One company on my resume and job application portal was listed as my employer (ABC), but ABC was actually the client/middle company. My actual employer was XYZ, & can fully verify my employment. HireRight has prefilled ABC from my resume. I want to change it to XYZ because that is my actual employer. I understand I should provide the correct information, but what happens because my resume/application previously showed ABC as my full-time employer? Will HireRight simply flag it as a discrepan”
“hi yall, I just got an verbal offer from recruiter and heard that I will be doing pre-employment background check. I have a DUI on my record, got arrested last year, and went to court this January, Since I have lost my job due to fail to pass the security clearance with other company, I am really anxious and nervous. it is defense sector company, start up size. Will I get a chance to disclose it before they run me through? If I being totally honest, will I be able to pass? I've been fighting”
“I'm applying to flight attendant jobs and these airlines do not play about verifying your past work experience. I've heard of people getting their jobs offers rescinded for the most minor of discrepancies. I'm really worried because one of my most relevant job experiences was an under the table job at a restaurant where I was paid in cash. I'm scared that when they do the background check, it won't come up. Even if they do reach out to me for proof that I worked there, I don&”

“So I was assigned a Sterling background check after accepting a job offer. Unfortunately, I have been unable to even get past the first menu where I enter my address history. I have chatted with 5 support agents, opened an IT ticket, and had my recruiter send three fresh links to no success. If anyone else has had this issue and managed to solve it, please let me know. submitted by /u/SteelCurtainFTW [link] [comments]”

“I was a federal contractor for eight years, followed by four months of unemployment. I have a job offer and need to go through the background check (job and housing history) all over again, covering a decade. I absolutely hate this process and would be thrilled to pay for a service that pulls this info that I then put into the system (I have rough dates for months/years) but getting exact dates involves admin effort I’m willing to pay for. Does anyone know of a reliable; non-scammy resource that”

“I’ve accepted a new job and am going through the typical onboarding process. I received a couple emails from checkr that they’re missing info, including my license and SSN card and to upload them. So I did. Turns out me and another person with a similar name are going through background checks right now. The background check my company uses is not checkr, but hers is. So checkr has my license and ssn, not hers. checkr doesn’t have a customer service phone number. They’ve been emailing me “so sor”

“Has anyone ever had to use ScreeningOne before getting officially hired? The online form I had to fill out yesterday forced me to put in the past 7 years of my address history, but I have lived where I currently live for way more than 7 years. It wouldn't let me select anything that said, "current, or N/A" for a "move out" date. It literally made me have to put on a month and year for when I "moved out" or it wouldn't let me move on to the next page. So, I p”

“A recruiter is likely to hear "I already have a full-time job" as an availability or conflict problem, not useful context. Keep the application focused on the part-time role; disclose outside work only if they ask or a contract/conflict policy requires it. Check J1's moonlighting policy before you commit.”
“I’m currently having a hard time obtaining an employment verification letter from my employer for my form i864. Will it be ok if I just submit my last 4 month paystubs and offer letter? “No, it’s not “doing my job” as a business owner you’re required to keep employment records so why not provide them or delegate the task to someone else. As a business owner, you’re always working. Just stop being petty. If that’s how you roll, so be it. It’s just corny. Trying to have the upper hand on somebody just because you can.”
“I am not sure about your state, but in ours you are not ALLOWED to give more info than that.”

“Hi I am on final round with FAANG and they want to do a background check even though we did not discuss numbers. The option is to allow contacting of current employer or provide pay stubs. “I recently accepted a new job and am supposed to start 9/15. I already pushed my start date back a week to allow time for the background check/drug screening and to give my current job two weeks notice. I took my urine drug test on 8/21 and it’s still processing. I called the lab today and they said after processing, it can take up to another 7-10 days for results to be reported which makes no sense to me. I’m prescribed ADHD medication that may show as amphetamines, so I’m also waiting for them”

“I signed an offer letter for a job two weeks ago and was supposed to start on 8/21. Info for background check was submitted same day I signed the offer letter, and the drug screen was completed two days later; as of today, my employer still hasn't gotten results from either. Both are "pending." Had to push my start date back last week and will probably have to push it back again. I have no concerns about clearing my background check or my drug screen (as long as the nurse properly”
“I worked for a SAAS company and some of our clients were in the financial sector, we had to do a background check before we were allowed to do any work with these clients. We had to give our job history but they didnt require exact dates it was rough estimate of month a year. Even then all the jobs I had going back 15 years it was a chore to remember it all. Doing this for a cleaning job is rediculous.”
“As the title states, I was recently hired for what I guess I would call my first "Big boy job" which consists of a pretty rigorous onboarding process. One of the things asked of me was to provide a phone number for the HR department of one of the previous companies I worked at, which wouldn't be an issue except for the fact that it didn't have any form of HR since it was a pretty small company in the US. On top of that, I'm no longer in contact with anyone who works for tha”
“Im going through a background check with FADV for my role with Del****e. My report surfaced employment duration discrepancies(which is mostly a date mismatch with the most recent employment) and employment non-disclosure(moonlighting) for the employment period they are interested in (past 7yrs). FADV sent me an inquiry regarding the same to either justify them with proper documentation or deny it. My questions— 1. If i chose to move forward, i need to come up with a super tight story which would”
“Curious if anyone has dealt with Sterling for background check…i got job offer 8/18 and filled out background for sterling same day which just asked for past 7 years off addresses, ssn# and driver license#…today has now been 5 business days which when i checked status a few days ago said it would be done today 8/26 so i checked that status again and now it says won’t be done until 10/6 so over a month now to verify? How is this even possible i have done 10 year federal background checks with 2 o”
“good luck, i think this would be very hard to enforce in general, since companies wont disclose what they are doing with thier job listing behind the scenes, unless you somhow got inside info, then you can potential file class action suits.”
“We are currently experiencing some issues with our background check company, it’s a tale as old as time - they got bought and now their support it atrocious and turnaround times got worse. Naturally, we are looking at other options and the internet likes to dump out Checkr as one of the top picks for background checks, but given it’s a fairly young company and it’s certainly using a lot of algorithms and/or AI I’m a bit skeptical when it comes to accuracy. We tend to get a decent amount of repor”
“After 8 months of unemployment and a month long interview process, a large entertainment company has offered me a position through a temp agency. The agency uses First Advantage and I was not familiar with how they go about their business. Because I lived in the state of Ohio in the past seven years, they are requiring me to send fingerprints for a criminal background check (I currently live in California). Instead of having the opportunity to scan my own prints electronically, FA is physically”
“I am due to start a new job and need to resign from my current employer. Since my background check report showed absolutely nothing bad am I good to resign or do I need to wait for some kind of email? Companies sometimes don’t send them quickly and I will need to resign in the next day to make two weeks notice. If I reach out it may look desperate ha. submitted by /u/ChanceIndependent257 [link] [comments]”

“I'm an oncampus hire for Google and currently going through BGV I did an internship with a US startup, but I was working remotely from India. It was a paid SDE internship for 5 months around. However I didn't have an account for taking payment in my wise account so I told the CTO to transfer it in my brother's wise account. Now, Hireright is asking for US employment documents. They specifically told me that for this verification they can accept a W-2 or that duration's paycheck s”
