Background Check Forms Don't Fit Gig Workers
Job applicants are experiencing significant frustration and anxiety dealing with third-party background check vendors. Common issues include inflexible forms, difficulty representing non-traditional employment (gig work, 1099), inaccurate information, and slow/unresponsive vendor support, creating delays and uncertainty in the hiring process.

“Hi everyone, I received a job offer in Canada and they will be conducting a background check through Mintz Global Screening. I have 6 months of Canadian work experience, but that job ended due to performance issues. During my interview, I mentioned it as “end…”
“I hope you're able to get some expunged. I have two previous convictions that are causing me a lot of trouble finding better jobs, and in my state, it's a $500 fee per charge to request getting them expunged. And even then, they can deny your request. They love to kick you while you're down.”
“I worked for a public utility and an offer had to be revoked because the new hire failed the credit check. Utilities take no risks.”
“Has anyone had any experience with DD doing a background check and being suspended and becoming unsuspended. I was suspended for a felony that I have from over 30 years ago and haven’t been in trouble since but is there any chance of going back to work with DD submitted by /u/North-Quail8350 [link] [comments]”
“Hey guys, has anyone encountered mistakenly answering a question wrong on their onboarding paperwork? The question was if I had any prior convictions that include a misdemeanor or felony even if it was expunged. I have an expunged misdemeanor from 2014. And I usually don’t have to put it down. So I contacted HR and a follow up email as well to see if I could correct it. The paperwork is all through DocuSign. Thank you for any input! submitted by /u/AdeptZombie4511 [link] [comme”
“That’s probably the safest bet. If it’s not something they would check anyway then 90% chance the recruiter just tells you not to worry about it. If it is something they check, then better to get ahead of it”
“You can sometimes get a backchannel "eligible/ineligible for rehire" which is a tell.”
“Hey everyone, I messed up big time and need some realistic advice on how to handle this. I attended an online bootcamp. On my resume, I listed the dates as Aug 2022 to May 2023. I also edited the PDF copy of my certificate to show April 2023 because I thought a shorter timeline looked better . In reality, I stayed in the bootcamp until December 2023. It doesn't overlap with any employment. Now, I am doing a background check with a 3rd party screening company in my onboarding. I am planning t”
“and plus the overall picture for your employment history - i remember having a number of not fully confirmed work experience fr years ago - companies change names, they're defunct; I had a roller coaster ride with one bg check because a 1099 spelled my name wrong off by 1 letter. So I'd say there wiggle room, but its just a pain when you submit your info and they can't confirm that "ABC" and "abc" are the same thing. I'm sure the human on the other like actual”
“I think for my current job I had a pretty similar if not exact exp - offer made, bg check final step, same form options - i just select terminated, poor performance just fr logistics - i think somewhere in my HR papers it does in fact use the word 'termination' and so my advice is to just follow the terminology a lot of the bg check is to verify much more serious offenses - like are you a danger to others at work, but another part of is is "are you being truthful or not". and s”
“That is absolutely not an appropriate question to be asked in an interview. Besides being irrelevant and rude, it is probably not legal to take your answer into consideration when making hiring decisions, even assuming that they are allowed to ask the question in the first place (depending on your country). I also have scars on my arm from my teenage years. Most of the time I completely forget they are there and go about my life in short sleeves, including at work. However, when attending an int”
“Hi all, I was curious how common this is/what the implications are. I was recently offered a job at a large company for a mid-level corporate individual contributor role, contingent on a background check. I have no problem with this; my record is clean, I didn’t lie in my resume etc etc. I went in expecting them to ask for my employment and education information so they could verify, but Accurate only requested my SSN, DoB, and addresses from the last 7 years. Is this normal for corporate positi”
“I joined a company but left within 2 days . No salary was ever credited. No PF was created. The role added no value to my experience or skills, and it wasn’t relevant to the experience that helped me secure my current offer. I’m now undergoing BGV with a new employer. Can such a short employment still create issues during BGV if it wasn’t disclosed? Has anyone experienced something similar? Looking for real experiences and outcomes rather than speculation. Thanks submitted by /u/Obvi”
“I recently received a job offer and am completing a background check through Sterling. The form asks for my reason for leaving my previous employer, and only has the do not contact option for my current employer. I was terminated due to performance issues. Should I simply select “terminated,” or should I use another reason such as being "laid off" or "resigning"? I only have preset options from a drop-down and there's another option that says "other/no response"”
“That’s really your call but if you listed it on the resume as volunteer experience, I don’t know if they’d even check it. If they do and they do and see the discrepancy, it’s possible they may not even think about it since a volunteer place may not keep the same quality of records as an employer. I have notified a recruiter of a typo on my resume once and she said don’t worry about it but it was something transposed not a date. I’ve seen mistakes on resumes from really professional, detail orien”
“Hello Fellow Job Seekers, I'm hoping to get some expert advice from you who have gone through a similar background check process. At this point, I'm not sure whether I'm worrying unnecessarily or whether my background check is taking longer than usual. Here's my current timeline: I accepted an offer from an international law firm in Europe (I'd prefer not to name the firm for privacy reasons). The recruitment process (interviews, assessments, etc.) took about a month. After s”
“I got an offer and I'm going through a nightmare of a background check where I was asked in the form of reason of leaving, first I chose terminated but latter I send them mail to change that to resigned due of the confussion of the reason, but they rejected to change and they are waiting the previous employer's documentations. the reason of termination was because of health issues that affected presence and partly affected the performance. in the same time I was preparing for a resignati”
“I’m at the final stages for a position, and they’re looking to move fast! They asked me for references today and I’d love to be able to provide my most recent company, but my former manager (was Director when I worked there, but now Exec Director) is now in senior leadership according to the public org chart and I know she’s probably incredibly busy. I sent her an email right after to ask if she’d be my reference as soon as I got the notification from the recruitment team requesting them, but I’”
“Listen - it's very possible that this won't get flagged at all. But if I was hiring someone and I learned or realized that someone had lied and pretended 15 hours of volunteering was a year plus of volunteering, I wouldn't hire them. It's the lie. Don't lie next time. Among other things, it isn't worth the stress.”
“Its being done by a third party hireright system and it was unpaid and i dont think they can verify it because i put it on my resume as an unpaid volunteer and theyre asking for w2's and such”
“I've found conflicting info here, I had a failure to appear in court for a failure to provide proof of insurance which I had in a personal vehicle and paid to reinstate a year ago. I'm interested in getting my CDL, but not sure from what I have read if the three year rule would apply here, especially if it was out of state? submitted by /u/don_cab [link] [comments]”
“What type of work was this? hopefully not marketing. I’d leave it off my resume unless you worked there for a long time, might want to include it to prove you have experience. I wouldn’t admit I was terminated. Whenever you’re interviewed they ask why did you leave the company, just tell them they violated your privacy my asking for control of your social media accounts and that’s why you left, don’t tell them you were canned because of that, they won’t ask ‘why were you fired?’. And if you’re s”
“Hey there, so awhile ago I was here asking about a different part of the process and all of that got approved par the police certificate. Now I’ve uploaded it to them a few times but they keep saying it’s wrong and I’m unsure what to do as the certificate doesn’t have all the information they’re after such as an expiry date. Was wondering if anyone else has had this issue or if they could tell me what the IIRC is after exactly or if I need to call them and ask? Edit: forgot to clarify I’m from t”
“Just accepted a FT job and I need to quit my internship early. I’m not going to do it until the background check clears and all the contingent paperwork is finished which leaves me 2 weeks. Is it recommended to give them a two weeks notice or quit on the latest possible day or maybe a few days prior. submitted by /u/Aznable-Char [link] [comments]”
“You’re fine, I was in the same boat except I did lie and was unemployed 5 months prior to starting. Just remember if you need to fulfill a background check, be truthful about your dates because they’ll find out and on the report it’ll have all of the information you entered and then the conclusion the investigators came to. In reality you’re “lying” to the recruiter and they have no reason to see your background check.”

“Job has asked for a reference from my most recent employer which I left for culture reasons (they know I left for these reasons). I was only at this job for a short period of time and have plenty of other references from other jobs. I told them I don’t feel comfortable but they still requested it. Realistically I could reach out to someone but tbh I don’t want this employer knowing my next job and they really didn’t know me well at all. Plus this job was so toxic I don’t even want to look back a”
“Hi! I'm a 17 y/o and I've just gotten hired for a co-op job through my school. It is important to note that this is my very first job ever. I was told by one of the hiring managers that I need to go to the notary for my I-9. I am supposed to bring either one thing from list A, which has stuff like a passport, or an authorized work permit with a photo. I don't have either, so I have to take something from list B, which is stuff like a report card, school ID, and list C, which is a bir”
“I’ve been job hunting and finally got an offer an a local credit union as a branch support rep. I’ve signed an offer letter and began the onboarding process which includes a credit/background check. Unfortunately, I’ve been unemployed for the last year and I haven’t had money. I stopped paying my car note and my car was repossessed (yes I know this wasn’t wise but it happened). My credit has suffered because of it and also I had to max out a few credit cards. I went from an 800 to mid 400’s scor”
“I’m currently unemployed and I resigned from my former job in may 27th , and was working somewhere but I ended up quitting so I’ve been unemployed for 2 weeks now , and I got a job offer for this diesel company as a mechanic , and I told them that I was working at this company for 2 1/2 years and when I was doing the background check application, I accidentally put that i was currently still employed there and I noticed the mistake right after I sent it in, I called my recuiter to let me her kno”

I have never gotten a DUI/had any problems with license etc. I keep calling hire right and they tell me please wait an additional 48 hours. “Im still a green tech, started with this company June 1st, that after being out of the field for 9 months, I was a maintenance tech for nation wide PE Company in Houston. I was hired to go through their 10 week maintenance tech training program. I had some hvac training at a community college 18 months before so it was good to get some more training, a paycheck and a job right before start of summer. It was commission pay and I struggled to make revenue like they wanted, eventually they cut me a”
“Hi guys! I’m currently at the background checks stage, just before the offer stage, where a company I really liked wants to take me in. I might be spiraling with anxiety because it’s my first job locally and I just wanted to ask— I currently have four pre-planned trips courtesy of family around public holidays. This was done under the assumption that I wouldn’t be employed this soon (womp womp) because I had just returned from college from overseas after working for a couple of years internation”
“I left my last job a few months ago, one of the management was harassing me through other people and I had a verbal outburst towards him. I resigned, I've since found out that HR from that job are intentionally trying to screw me in a reference - when asked 'Would you employ this person again?' They answered no. The manager that I spoke back against has his hooks into the actual manager, who in turn is cosy with HR and has told them about what I said to the harassing individual. I do”
“I left a landscaping job due to workplace bullying abruptly one morning, I texted that reference/my boss at the time, essentially saying "I'm sorry but I quit." A week later I came to pick up my paycheck but I didn't see him and never heard from him. But then his boss came outside after me and said that he understands why I left, there are no hard feelings, and I can come back if I wanted. I stupidly didn't put him as a reference because I didn't know his last name. So”

“I signed a job offer and my start date is in less than a week. They sent me onboarding information on Monday last week and told me to expect a link for background screening and payroll information which never arrived. I disclosed that I changed my legal name recently for the purpose of background check / employment verification (big mistake, I know) and now everything has been delayed. They said they haven't run my background check or sent me any onboarding materials because I changed my leg”
“Hi everyone! I recently received the Background Verification (BGV) email for a Video Labeling role through Randstad , and I was hoping to connect with someone who is currently working in the same position (or has worked there before). If you don’t mind sharing, I’d really appreciate some insights: How long have you been working in this role? What’s your current salary/CTC? (Only if you’re comfortable sharing.) I was told it’s a 12-month renewable contract. Does the contract usually get renewed?”
“Incoming associate this fall. In the midst of bar study crunch time. Was sent background check info for the firm in starting at. Just got results back. Everything looks good, except I appear to have made a few typos in years. For instance a place I worked in 2021, I mistakenly put 2022, you get the idea. The places all verified I worked there, I’m just a little spooked by the “discrepancy” noted on the form. I’m hoping this isn’t a huge deal, but is it? All I’m concerned about are these typos/mi”

“Hey everyone. I recently got recruited to my dream job and was asked to complete a sterling backcheck Tier 1 and Tier2. I have nothing to hide but I am concerned about an unpaid internship at the start of my resume at a company that I got through a family connection (so not through a formal hiring process). I did the work, but because it was unpaid, there may not be HR records like payroll or tax documents. The department I was working in got relocated so all the supervisors are no longer at the”
“This is technically for the UK, not the EU, but on this point I don’t believe the UK has diverged since Brexit, so should still be valid. The UK’s Information Commissioners Office website has a lot of very useful information on GDPR, and some templates on this specific question - see below. And yes, trying to get all your data permanently resident in the EU is nigh impossible if you’re using major cloud providers. For example, Microsoft’s EU data boundary has a boat load of exceptions. “Hi there! I recently got a letter of offer and accepted it. I received the contract from today (I haven’t accepted it yet) and they want me to do a Australian police check. However, My international passport is expired by 3 years more and I only have my birth certificate, Medicare card, bank card and visa VEVO check. Do I reach out to HR at my new job to let them know? I’m currently getting my passport renewed urgently and won’t be here for at least a few more days. I completely forgot about upd”
“I'm trying to get a job at this hotel but my employment gap is bad so I told them I worked at a restaurant from March 2025 to October 2025 , but the truth is I only worked there during the month of March. The reason I told that white lie is because the restaurant ended up shutting down in October, so I figured the chances of them being able to verify my employment were pretty slim. Has anyone else ever been in a situation like this? If so, what happened? Did the employer ever find out, or di”

“I'm currently going through background check via HireRight. All the info on my resume is correct, but I have one anxiety. I left a startup on bad terms with my manager (professional disagreements). I still gave a 2 week notice, completed handover, etc. etc. but I know that company doesn't like me. Since then, that company has been acquired by a massive global corporation. My question is...who does HireRight contact to verify my information? Will they somehow get back to the manager who d”
