New Parents Struggling with Baby Sleep
Parents are experiencing significant challenges transitioning their babies to sleep sacks, resulting in disrupted nap schedules. Concerns also exist around breastfeeding duration and freedom, alongside anxieties about public feeding and weaning.

“My LO is 2 weeks old and actually is a great sleeper compared to our first. He will sleep 5-7 hours at night on either my husband or I (pediatrician approved him sleeping that long because of his weight gain). So far we have taken…”
“Oh my god. The 4 month sleep regression came in hot and punctual. Things technically started to go downhill around 3.5 months but we were still getting 2-3 hour stretches (and I thought that was bad!). Lol. On his exact 4 month birthday we woke up every. Single. Hour. I saw every hour of the night on the clock the last two nights. We attempted to bounce him instead of boobing (which my husband can do during the days to get him down) and he flat out refused. He needed boob. Every hour. He’s also”
“Is this even normal? My baby today fought every single one of his naps. He’s usually not like this. He also wanted more food today, but nothing crazy. The thing is he just really really fought sleep the entire day. Is this normal or should I be concerned? He’s probably slept. Good few hours today. If that. submitted by /u/SandwichDependent199 [link] [comments]”
“Almost 21 month old needs bottle and being rocked for nap and bed. I’m a therap***(auto mod) that works some days but also evenings after baby goes to bed. I’ve had to cancel a weeks worth of evening sessions because she will not allow me to lower her into her crib without waking up. She’s in her own room. Bedtime routine is copy paste. Dinner, play, bath, in the crib by 7-730pm with white noise, black out curtains. All the things Tonight I put her down in the crib, she woke up screaming crying,”
“Hi, FTM here with a 12 week old - she cries a lot especially while we try to get her to sleep. Doesn‘t matter if rocking, bouncing, shushing etc., everyday for every nap and every night before bedtime she will fight sleeping. I thought it would be a relief to use BF to get her to sleep. In the first weeks she slept a lot during BF but it got less and less with every week. Nowadays befire bedtime she will latch but it will only go well for a couple of minutes, because at some point I think she ju”
“My 8 week baby used to nap for about 7-8 hours during the day till she was 5.5 weeks. From 6 weeks she started doing contact naps only during the day. She has had other issues, she was in NICU so she is 3 weeks corrected and averages about 11-14 hours or sleep which has gone down in the last couple weeks. We got her tongue tie released on Thursday and not sure of its related but her day naps have reduced even further. Now it’s almost day 6 and she isn’t even doing contact naps after her morning”
“My baby sleeps better when his arms are down, we try to keep it for night but noticed his naps are getting cut short bc he wakes himself up. During the day we haven’t been swaddling him because j wanted him to associate the swaddle with nighttime but idk if I’m doing that right. What do you do? submitted by /u/SandwichDependent199 [link] [comments]”
“Looking for any advice, general insight, etc. about naps! My (FTM) LO is 12 wks old, I’m home on leave for 2 more weeks. He has an early bedtime (self imposed, he’s always preferred an early bedtime) between 7-8pm and usually wakes around 1-3am and again at 4-6am. I try to keep the wake windows at 1.5-2hrs to build sleep pressure for naps and making that time stimulating. Then have tried him napping where he sleeps at night (snoo), crib in own room, pack N play downstairs, and variety of swaddli”
“Hey guys! Can anyone explain to me what an average six week old sleep schedule looks like? I know it’s different for every baby but tonight I woke up super worried about it lol. My daughter is ebf and I feed on demand. I usually don’t wake her and she’ll wake up on her own between 1-3 hours of last eating. Tonight she was asleep for almost 4 hours and it had been 4 and a half hours since she last ate. She didn’t even wake up! I woke her up to change her diaper and offer her food and she also did”
“We have been trying to transition our 5 month old baby out of the swaddle once I saw him roll in his crib. We tried doing one arm out, both arms out, and have been using a sleep sack that has mittens on the end, for weeks now. He goes down wide awake, puts himself to sleep independently, but come 2am, he is up every 15 minutes because he keeps hitting himself in the face. I’m at a loss of what to do here since he cannot be swaddled because of the risk, but also he needs to sleep. Sorry if this m”
“FTM, baby is 2mo. I know sleep isn’t supposed to be all figured out now, but Thurs, Fri and Sat night he had 4-6 hour stretches!!! Of course last night, work night for daddy he only had 3 hour stretches. So today I made sure to get his naps in thinking maybe that was the issue as he didn’t nap well yesterday, but after 4pm napping is hard for him. Total was 4.5 hours today. Went on a drive he slept from 5-6, he got super fussy around 7 so thought we’d start bed early… well here we are 9pm and he”
“My LO is 9 months now. When he was 0-4m my partner & I took turns night sleeping with him in a baby pod next to a single bed. My partner would sleep with him 8pm-12am with bottle feeds, however I started co-sleeping with him as my breasts became engorged & close to mastitis. So for the last 5 months as I co-slept with LO in a queen bed. He sleeps fine until midnight, but wakes up so frequently every hour or so just to suckle on my nips like a pacifier. Only around 2am would he drink anot”
“When did your baby start napping more than 30 minutes at a time… My daughter is almost 7 months old and these short naps are killing me. Today i barely had enough time to make and eat a bag of ramen noodles before she was awake again 😭 and i can NEVER rescue a nap. Even if its a contact nap if she wakes up the slightest bit its over. We had 1 day where she took 3 one hour naps and it was incredible. But idk what was different about that day lol submitted by /u/LannaChey [link]”
“My oldest is five and he didn’t take a long nap in the crib til he was like… a year old. He was an all around not great sleeper. My second is 12 weeks, 13 weeks Wednesday. She sleeps so great in her crib at night, gets up 1-3x. I know this is common but daytime naps are meh. Whether I’m holding her, or I put her down, most naps are 30 minutes. She has usually one long nap, an 1-3 hours, but that’s always a contact nap. Honestly this is fine except, I return to work in August (WFH) and she starts”
“My baby is about to turn 4 months and I need a safe place to vent with other people who are victimized by pterodactyl age. Baby entered sleep regression at 12 weeks and we, a great team with my angel of a husband, were quite optimistic that we’ll keep managing just fine. After a month of hourly wake ups she finally gave us a few glorious nights with only 4 wake ups, and then her sleep regression regressed even further into abyss and she straight up cried almost the entire night, wanting to be he”
“I want to hear all of your guys’ sleeping situations. How long do you sleep straight? For how long? What changes did you notice in your production, bodies, etc. My baby sleeps good but I’m too scared to sleep. I stay up until 1 to pump and then make sure he’s in bed with me by 5 to nurse while I lay there. Not a co-sleeping topic at all. So those convos might as well be avoided because they are so controversial. Appreciate this sub. Always so helpful ♥️ submitted by /u/Content_Diffic”
“So far 🤞🏻, my baby has been a fairly decent sleeper. He’s 10w old and while we are struggling with lots of things about breastfeeding and infanthood, sleeping seems to be his best trait. (Not saying we didn’t go through the witching hour or struggle to go down for naps sometimes.) He actually went 8 hours last night! The issue is my breasts, they just get too full and I am woken in need of pumping at hour four or five. I am somewhat of an oversupplier right now, but I’m worried about ruining s”
“My husband and took shifts at night for my baby’s first 8 weeks of life because she refused to sleep anywhere other than our arms no matter what she did. After we each had episodes of falling asleep with her on our shifts, we decided to start cosleeping falling safe sleep 7 guidelines. Even following the guidelines, I still feel anxious every night going to bed. At almost 4 months, she is starting to roll over & get generally more mobile. This is causing me to feel more and more anxiety, and”
“Hi all, my son is 3 months next week, he had an absolute hell period from 6 weeks to 9 weeks just constantly crying until the next nap. He has never slept overnight or even close, he’s usually up every 2-3 hours overnight, recently every hour. He won’t sleep in his basinet after the initial 3 hours after bedtime (7-8pm) and wakes up around 6:30. His naps are typically 45 minutes and then he is only able to be awake for 45 minutes before he’s tired again and it’s causing us to have him sleep way”
“I have been rescuing naps for the last 5 months, in the last week her naps have finally started to extend past 30 mins and we get one glorious 1.5-2 hour nap. I could cry, I never thought this day would come. I actually read a book for an hour today. That’s all, I just had to tell someone who would understand how exciting this is ! submitted by /u/Pink_Daisy47 [link] [comments]”
“Hi everyone, my baby is 9 almost 10 weeks and I’m wondering if it’s time to drop a nap. I know sleep isn’t structured really at all at 2 months but he’s been pretty consistently taking 5 naps up to this point. I recently stopped capping his naps because I felt he would wake up in a worse mood when I did and when I stopped capping it he’d wake up naturally around 2 1/2 hours anyway (I tried to cap at 2 hours before.) every nap is a contact or carrier nap, so that’s the only reason they can go so”
“Hello, I have a 12 week old. He’s a terrible sleeper 🥺 I’m alone for the next 3 weeks without my spouse. It’s becoming unbearable getting little to no sleep. I’ll let him fall asleep in my arms, stay there for 30-40 minutes and the minute I transfer him into his bassinet he wakes up. Any advice on sleep training and what worked best for you all? submitted by /u/False-Masterpiece855 [link] [comments]”
“Im a FTM to a 3.5 month old who is generally a good sleeper. I’ve always either nursed or rocked him to sleep, sometimes he falls asleep really fast and sometimes it takes quite a while. Currently we do most of his naps as contact naps where I nurse him to sleep and then chill with him in bed until he wakes up. It’s incredibly cosy, but of course also makes it hard to get anything done. A few weeks ago he discovered he can suck on his thumbs/fingers which he now does basically all the time. And”
“My baby is 14W and I go back to work in a month. He can sometimes fall asleep without the boob, but it works like a charm when he’s being fussy. I would do it forever if I wasn’t going back to work and know it’s natural, but starting to get anxious about him being in daycare and not being able to nap. Any practical tips of what worked for you appreciated as we start to wean this habit over the next few weeks ❤️🩹 submitted by /u/pollytheparrott [link] [comments]”
“Hi, my 14 month old daughter was a fantastic sleeper starting when she was 7 weeks. She would sleep through the night and it only took us a couple of minute to put her down, usually. When she turned 8 months I believe her object permanence peaked and she would scream cry if we walked out of her room so we moved her to our bed. Co-sleeping went fine, she still slept through the night but just had to be close to me. At 12 months she started daycaare and got very sick - a cold followed by croup, th”
“Baby not rolling yet, but escapes from his swaddle at most naps + overnight (and wakes up with scratches on face since nails need trim, poor guy). We're using Amazon cotton sleep sac + silent velcro swaddle over top for arms. He doesn't stay asleep w/o arms swaddled. “Our 6 week old will fall soundly asleep in our arms, but as soon as she senses the downward motion and feeling of being placed flat she immediately wakes up crying and we have to reset. Any dads master it and can share a few tips? submitted by /u/bangerrang [link] [comments]”

“I know it’s not over, but maybe, just maybe I can start to heal. My back is destroyed from sleeping jn bed with him. He’s super cute when he would grab my hand to pull over him and cuddle or when we’re reading stories and even though the light is out and he’s yawning his head off, he is still saying “moah, moah”. The last few years are not how I wanted our lives to go. I had big dreams of him sleeping 12 hrs at 12 wks and reading that book and many others ended up setting horrible expectations.”
“Our one month old is ebf apart from one bottle of formula at the start of the night so I (mom) can get some rest. For the last two weeks, he always wakes up around 3am (he naturally wakes every two hours anyways) with a tremendous amount of gas. It results in him falling asleep for around fifteen minutes and then waking up crying and grunting. Rinse and repeat until we are up for the day at 6am. For reference, he’s rarely gassy and uncomfortable during the day. I understand newborns are gassy bu”
“Currently on a 3 hour schedule with my 7 week old between 8am and 8pm, and he usually only wakes up once per night around 4-5am. I typically nurse for every feed besides the 8pm where we give him a larger pumped bottle, and the middle of the night feed where we also give him a pumped bottle. I’m wondering if I should start moving to the four hour feed window… how did you know it was the right time/your LO was ready? What did you do to make the transition? Any tips are greatly appreciated!!”
“Hi all, ftm here. My 8 month old is doing well with sleep finally and I’m becoming confident that when I put her down for the night she’ll generally sleep through. I want to take advantage of this and start to venture out in the world again, maybe going on a date night etc. with my partner while my parents or a nanny looks after her (although there’s not much to do if she doesn’t wake up). Or during the day, going to a class while she naps. Ultimately I also want the flexibility of having her sl”
“Has anyone had any luck with false starts without sleep training? My baby is 19 weeks. We just started (two days ago) a new schedule. She is up at 8am and then does 1.5/2/2/2/2.25 Naps are usually 1.5 hours-2, then 40, 30, 30 She goes down at 9pm and will fall asleep pretty easily. Maybe some shushing and gentle butt pats. However, night 1 she woke up after 40 minutes, then did a long stretch. Night two she was up after 40 minutes and then was up every hour for 3 hours until I put her in bed wit”

“I made a post similar to what I’m about to write at 3.5 weeks old. Now baby is 3 months old and is still needing to be held for naps and sleep. We have tried everything. Sleep sac, warming up bassinet, rubbing smell on it, hand on chest. The longest we have ever gotten her to sleep independently is about 25 minutes. I’m EXHAUSTED. Physically and mentally. I guess I’m just looking to see if anyone else has been in this position and if it has gotten better. I love my baby but I am so extremely bur”
“I’m an FTM, my baby has always been a great sleeper and has slept through the night until now. She is currently only waking up once fully during the night, if I don’t heat up a bottle fast enough this quickly turns into screaming. She wakes up halfway multiple times and stirs but can normally be settled if I pat her or put her dummy back in. She also now screams before bed and fights so hard, which has never happened. She also won’t sleep during the day for more than 20 minutes at a time. She is”
“Hey guys, my baby (4 weeks) has struggled to sleep during night, especially in his cot We spent a lot of time co sleeping but with my partner being back in work it didn’t work the best for us anymore but whenever we put him in his cot he would be awake within 20 minutes What helped? ‘Relaxing music with water sounds’ I honestly didn’t think it was going to do much but when I tell you I was able to get a good 3 hour stretch before his feed and get him back in his cot fed, changed and asleep in LE”
“We have a 16 month old who is 99th percentile for height. She's in woolino 2-24 month sleep sacks and we looooove them, but she is starting to get to the point where I'm looking forward... and wondering if I should buy one of the 2-4 year woolinos because we like them. They are just so expensive! So I'm just curious: when did you stop and why? Ours loves her sleep sack and drags them around the house all day like their her little friends, so I just feel like I can't stop putting”
“Our baby is 11 weeks old and usually does a first 3-4 hour stretch, sometimes even longer. I have seriously not seen any improvement on night sleep, ever. He has done these stretches at just a few weeks old, i expected sleep to be so much better already For the first time tonight, he is waking every 90 minutes. Is there a 11 week sleep regression? Why is his sleep getting worse?? submitted by /u/MirjamT [link] [comments]”
“Hi - I think my newborn 6WO is an OK sleeper, all things considered. He does most naps in his crib now and sleeps at night in our bedside bassinet. He naturally has started to seem to go into deeper sleep in the evenings, going 3 ish hours on average between feeds, making me think (and hope) he’s slowly consolidating his nighttime sleep to be longer eventually. What’s confusing me is his naps are way more all over the place once we started doing a small nap routine in the crib. He goes down well”
“Basically the title! LO is 12 weeks and loves the love to dream swaddle up but I know she will need to transition out soon, she’s a decent sleeper and I don’t want to ruin it 😭 submitted by /u/IcyHoneydew8087 [link] [comments]”
“FTM to a beautiful baby who will ONLY sleep in our arms or in a swing. Even at night. We’ve been doing the swing as safe cosleeping is difficult due to our soft mattress. Did anyone else have a baby like this? Does it eventually get better? I know that the swing also isn’t a safe sleep surface but I am desperate at this point to get some sleep, but I also don’t want them to sleep in a swing for the rest of their lives. submitted by /u/Rude_Language6889 [link] [comments]”
“Hey y'all, FTM to a 3m old baby girl! A couple weeks ago she started wiggling her arms out of her swaddle as she slept so we transitioned her to a sleep sack. Since then, she sleeps well the first half of the night (till around 1am) but goes wild the second half. She's rubbing her eyes, flailing her arms, sometimes pulling her hair, and whimpering all throughout the night like every 3-5 minutes! I know moving and wiggling is normal for babies but this goes on for hours, until she wakes u”
“Our 15-week LO is out of her swaddle and is sleeping generally well during night. She currently sleeps in cotton sleepers (without footies) and socks. I feel she could use a sleep sack or something cozy to help her sleep longer. Thing is she likes to spread out during sleep and we feel a sleep sack hinders that. She was in love to dream transition swaddle and that definitely was restricting her leg movement. She is also a long baby. I’m looking for some ideas for merino wool sleepers or somethin”
“Did anybody use one of these? If so, how did you do it? I’m sort of in a predicament because I’ve been having my LO practice being in the crib for her first nap but as I’m watching on the monitor it seems like she’s arching her back and moving around like she’s trying to roll. She uses the Love to Dream regular swaddle currently in the Snoo but we double swaddle and she’s strapped in so I know that it’s safe. I want to get the LTD transition swaddle but noticed it’s for babies starting at 13 lbs”
“This is 2 questions in one post, lol. 1.) My 8mo is a bubbly drama queen who loves to eat and play. But the last few days, she’s been eating and playing in between naps as long as FIVE HOURS. Last night she slept for 13 hours straight. Do I need to be waking her up to eat when she sleeps that long? Is it healthy/normal for a baby to sleep that long? 2.) She is such a good baby and when she gets upset, she gets FURIOUS, but it hardly ever happens. One thing I think she should get furious for but”
“Hi everyone, I need feeding schedule advice for my 12-week-old who is exclusively BF. He wakes around 7:30-9 AM(inconsistent wake ups), has a 11:15 PM bedtime, and 60-70 minute wake windows. To make it to bedtime, we do 5-6 naps: two extended 1.5-2 hour contact naps, and the rest are 30-40 minute bassinet catnaps. We are trying to establish an Eat-Play-Sleep routine with feeds spaced 2.5-3 hours apart. The problem is he demands to feed every single time he wakes up, even after the short 30-40 mi”
“We have tried everything from changing routines, rocking her, letting her cry, etc. Nothing works on her. She cries instantly when we put her in her crib. Her crib is new as we transitioned her late from her bassinet and it's only been a week. Her crib is in the corner in our room. We don't know what it is but any random tips that one doesn't think of that worked for you!? submitted by /u/LokiMeena1 [link] [comments]”

“No more contact naps Never thought this day would come. My baby is now 6 months and 3 weeks ago I told myself that I am over contact napping. Searched alll of reddit for tips and messages loads of moms asking for updates I love my baby but she's getting really heavy (born at 11lbs) and I wanted to be able to get things done around the house. “my little boy has slept through the night every night since he was 8 weeks old. that was until he started rolling over and we had to take the little wings off his sleep sack. he’s going through a small sleep regression which we are handling pretty well but what bothers me the most is that now he wakes up and his diaper has completely leaked through his clothes. we use a brand that i really love and has never failed me before so i was shocked. i assume it’s because he’s on his tummy during basica”
“My little boy is almost 2 months old, and over the past few days he's started doing something I wasn't expecting. After a feed and some awake time (talking, making faces, tummy time, etc.), I put him in his bassinet awake , give him his pacifier and leave him in a quiet corner of the same room I'm in. He'll usually look around for a while, suck on the pacifier, and then, within 10–15 minutes, fall asleep completely on his own. He doesn't cry or seem upset—he's just... con”

My baby is 2 weeks old, I know he needs me for regulating his nervous system etc. I love holding him. The problem is I have done nothing BUT hold him for 2 weeks now. “I’m a 2nd time mom, but he might as well be my first. He hates everything. Always fussy. And it’s draining me. We co-sleep out of desperation, but I don’t really sleep when he is in the bed. He also sucks at taking naps. His naps are never longer than 30 minutes and he wakes up still tired. He won’t go back down after 30 minutes either. BUT if I sleep with him for his nap, he sleeps for a few hours. I obviously can’t do that for every nap because I have things to do. We have been trying the Ferb”
“I don’t want to jinx myself but has anyone else experienced this? Our little one seems to sleep more in the days leading up to and following milestone upgrades! She just started rolling over yesterday and was been so sleep for the 3ish days before and has kept napping more until today too. We haven’t experienced what I would consider a sleep regression yet and she has been sleeping through the night (mostly) since she was 3 weeks old. Do I have a unicorn? submitted by /u/Garden-Ho326”
“Yet another desperate sleep-deprived FTM here! My baby is 5 weeks old and we’ve struggled from the start with him being put down in his bassinet to sleep. Thankfully we’ve reached a point where he’ll go down for some stretches at night but still won’t tolerate it for naps during the day (I’m really struggling with the need to be constantly holding him tbh, especially since I’m exclusively breastfeeding so it feels like I never get a break). Now that he’ll go down a bit at night, we get a couple”
“My baby is 3.5 months and is sleeping in her own sleep space. We are not comfortable with bed sharing, so please do not recommend this as it is not something we are willing to do. She is rolling belly to back and can roll onto her side, but is not yet rolling back to belly. She is currently swaddled in a sleep sack with swaddle flaps as it is the only way we get decent stretches of independent sleep from her. She is doing amazing in the crib, typically 10 hours a night with 1-2 wake ups to feed.”

Toddler sleeps all night no problem. Lately, has been falling asleep around noon in the car, only the car. Which isn’t ideal. Also if we aren’t in the car, a nap will take place at 2-3PM and toddler wakes up an absolute nightmare, a solid tantrum for 30 minutes after waking. What should I do? This ca”
“My baby is 6 months, EBF, on a 2/2/3/3 schedule, sleeping from about 8:30pm-7am. Naps are 40min-2hrs. He wakes every 1-2 hours at night. The past month, my husband has been getting him for the night wakings and trying to soothe back to sleep without nursing. Baby screams for up to an hour before either falling back asleep, or until we let him nurse back to sleep. We are discouraged because it has been a month of this with no progress. I was thinking if night weaning, but am hearing mixed advice”
