“I was recently made redundant. I been in the game for like 13 years from Australia! Just started the job hunt and I can't even get an interview! Anyone facing this?”

“Why would they train you if they can hire someone who already knows the system? And you are not qualified if you do not meet the qualifications of knowing the program. Unless they can't f8nd someone who knows the program, there is no incentive to hire someone they have to train.”

Several IT professionals express concern about job security, particularly if they were to lose their current position. Some acknowledge the impact of certifications and security clearances on employability, while others worry about age discrimination and the difficulty of finding new roles, especially with high salary expectations.

“Most don't understand, they think they're safe, it's a false sense of security. [re: Do people who've had the same job for years (15+) not understand how difficult it is to get a job interview?]”

“I was fortunate cause I moved here at a young age and was able to get my citizenship 12 years after we moved to the US. So I never had to worry about companies having to sponsor me. I'm pretty american as fuck anyways since I went to elementary, middle, high school, and college here. While I was largley aware of the H1-B situation and the waiting period for green card growing longer especially for those from India. This current Presidential administration has probably mentally tortured legal”

“Came across this IT Security Analyst position in Calgary today. $88k - $115k salary, only 36 years of experience required. Unfortunately, I only have 35 years, so I don't want to waste the recruiter's time. Nice to see employers finally lowering their expectations in this economy. submitted by /u/void1101 [link] [comments]”

“For someone with only 5 years with all those certs sorta is a red flag. You had time to pass all of them working full time? 🤣 Those 5 years should've been spent on projects hands on production work. What projects did you work on those 5 years?”

“Yes, I (American) also getting pushed out by previously third-world country hires, and now AI lol”

“… or the fact that they’re easier to strong-arm to unacceptable working conditions at a lower rate? Them being better isn’t even the point. I say this as an immigrant myself, my friend is terrified of getting laid off and getting kicked out”

It’s not always an advantage depending on the place.

“I remember going for a role which required "10 years experience of GDPR" in 2020. Unless you was on the various sub committees drafting the fucking legislation, its a hard effort. Edit, spelling”

“understand that bad job markets mean that even people with better qualifications than you are racing to the bottom of what they will accept regarding role and compensation because the bills don't stop coming. that's what people mean when they say it's an employee's market or an employer's market ... back when the great resignation happened everyone was getting wild come-ups in both rank and compensation, now that things are shitty you're not seeing those like you used to.”

“Either they aren't getting replaced because of job elimination, or it's because it's taking forever to replace them because all the people they want who have that experience are around the former shareholder/director/upper-management's age, and therefore there's very little knowledge transfer and an even smaller amount of seniority because the person just got there. At my last role, there was a director position for my department that was basically all just business developme”

“If I lost my job tomorrow, I'd think that I need to re-evaluate my process in the IT world.”

“Companies don't pay for a clearance, the government does. And defense and aero actually had been hiring a lot recently. It's just that competitive, because these jobs were not attractive a few years ago when the sexy jobs were in the private sector”

“I'd just leave IT and find something I'm not passionate about.. No interest at all staying in IT if anything went sideways tomorrow”

“im fairly confident i can get a job in like 2 or 3 months. i am in the middle of my career. old enough to have experience but not so old im going to retire anytime soon. i also live in the biggest city for literally 700km. i left my job 2 years ago and landed a job in a month so its hard to say now but i could coast easily for 3 or 4 months on savings and find a decent job. alot longer if i had to”

“I don't think I'd be able to find another job at all. I got very, very lucky with this one after nearly a year.”

r/sysadmin18d ago

“I like to think not very. Mostly because the sysadmin-market where I live is pretty insane with two large MSPs competing madly for people, and after many years in the biz I have a good contact-network. The problem is that I'd most likely have to go back to the MSP-world if that happens, and that isn't something I'd want. I'm VERY done with that bullshit at 50.”

“My skillset makes me pretty hirable. The problem is finding a job that is willing to pay entry what i am currently making with 7 years worth of raises/promotion.”

You’re joking…..

“Unlikely that I would. But I’m close enough to retirement that I’d just find SOMETHING to cover me until then.”

If I lost my job I’m taking a break for awhile.

how hard? yes

reddit.com18d ago

“Not very hard BUT that is only because of my advanced certifications and my security clearances. Without those two things it would take significantly longer because my salary is so high. I could pretty easily find another job within 3 months and probably half of that time is onboarding. That's about how long people who have similar experience and credentials to me are out of work. Again though it's the certs and clearances doing 99% of the lifting. Government is starving for already clea”

r/sysadmin18d ago

“I'd be fucked and most likely would have to make a very long/far move (I'm talking a complete state change, and 200+ mile move at least) to a much larger city.”

r/sysadmin18d ago

“I lost out to 3 separate jobs a month or so ago because I wasn’t 40 lol I’m sure you’ll be fine”

r/sysadmin18d ago

“Im only a couple years in. So, if i lost my job, i would be questioning if IT is right for me. I would probably become a recruiter, or go into sales. Something personable and void of technology for the most part.”
