Shopify Sellers Hit by PayPal Payment Freezes

Small online store owners are experiencing sudden and unexplained payment holds on their PayPal accounts, particularly after periods of high sales volume. This freeze in funds disrupts their business operations and creates significant financial uncertainty, leaving them unable to fulfill orders or pay suppliers. The lack of clear communication and resolution from PayPal exacerbates the frustration.

I’ve been a seller on Etsy since April and had a few sales but nothing a high volume maybe 1 sale a week as my product is a limited market. One of my products got reviewed on a YouTube channel and since Sunday I’ve had…

I keep seeing posts on Reddit and on other forums where people experience a large boost in sales, and then they find that their payment processor has frozen thousands of dollars and suspended their account. I want to talk about that here. There are a ton of reasons why processors hold your money: it comes down to things like automated risk scoring, volume spike penalties, chargeback velocity, etc. Also, most platforms now use AI to monitor transaction behavior. So what happens is that if you sud

You may also lose certain credit card benefits that require charging full amount to the credit card, such as Travel Interruption Coverage and Extended Warranty.

your Orders list settles it, since that doesn't go through the reporting pipeline. Filter it to the same date range and compare the count and total against what analytics shows. If they match, it's display only and you can ignore it. If orders are missing too, that's a different and much worse problem.

r/shopify1d ago

that suspense account trick has saved me more than once, and the reports changing mid-month thing is so real, i started waiting until at least the 5th before pulling anything final and the differences basically stopped showing up

I run a small bootstrapped SaaS, around $500 MRR, basically just me. I use a merchant of record for billing so I don't have to handle global tax and compliance myself. A couple weeks ago a payout just failed. About $300. No email, no reason, nothing. Then the next payout didn't show up either. So my revenue is sitting there and I can't get to it. I opened a ticket. No reply. Emailed again, tried the in-app chat, even tried them on social. Over a week of total silence. I'm bootstr

I’d turn this into one chronological escalation packet with every ticket number, payout ID, business document, bank letter, and screenshot. Ask support to confirm in writing exactly what the verification team needs and whether payouts can be redirected after ownership is established. Opening several separate tickets may make the history harder for the next person to follow. Give critical vendors an honest timeline and prioritize the ones that could stop operations immediately. I don't know what's going on. As far as I can tell absolutely nothing has changed for me when using my PayPal debit card. To test yet again, I went to Walmart and got a $499 money order. Within seconds I received a text message informing me of the purchase: PayPal: You paid $500.00 USD to WM SUPERCENTER #xxxx and your 2500 points for this purchase are confirmed. Same thing happened buying groceries at Costco. When getting into my PayPal account I could immediately transfer my rewards or

I can’t seem to get a straight answer from support & have read a few horror stories about it here. My shop is 5 years old. I made a few sales 5 years ago & then my shop sat untouched until 3 months ago 3 months ago I made that first sale after returning . When I made that first sale after returning Etsy placed a payment reserve on my account & a 14 day hold after each sale. They lifted the payment reserve 2 days ago, but there’s still the 14 day hold on funds. Support is saying that

apps.apple.com9d ago

I’d book to suspense and see if it shakes out on the next set of statements. Something I’ve also found in particular with both Shopify and Stripe is that their reports change the first few days of the month. I used to pull them first thing on the first every month but found that when I did my pre-delivery checks, what I had in QB no longer matched the reports in those dashboards. So now I wait until the the 2nd or 3rd each month for those reports to solidify / settle and that often prevents any

r/Bookkeeping10d ago

Well the big one is to tamper your expectations significantly. The minimum payout amount is $100, which may take months to accumulate.

r/NewTubers11d ago

So what happened was he paid the $1,206 in march it processed then it got moved over to “pending payments” and it’s said “pending” ever since so I don’t think the payment thing is accurate so I’m not sure I’ll even be able to see when it gets posted back to his account. When I called to make the transfer she said we would get confirmation in the mail within 3 weeks, this was 2 weeks ago

r/tax11d ago

A 75-day estimate is normal. The issuing bank makes the final decision, so Shopify support usually cannot speed up the review. It is still reasonable to contact Shopify once to confirm that your evidence was accepted and forwarded, and to verify the exact chargeback reason and deadline. Because you have already submitted emails, call records, and tracking, keep a complete copy of everything you sent. The key question is whether that evidence directly answers the stated chargeback reason. Trackin

nobody answered your reserve question, and that's the outcome worth planning for. A rolling reserve or a stretched payout schedule is a common middle result on these rather than a clean release. I'd ask support directly whether a reserve is on the table. If they say yes you get a number to plan the supplier payment around, which is what your August 8 date actually needs.

reddit.com12d ago

authorize.net is worth looking at since it's more traditional/document heavy but doesn't do the sudden hold thing shopify payment does, and there's dedicated high risk processors like paycompass or durango that specifically work with luxury resale/high ticket sellers since they actually underwrite you upfront instead of algorithmically flagging you after the fact. tradeoff is higher fees and a slower setup, but way more predictable once you're in. worth having one as backup even

r/shopify12d ago

Thank you. We received a request an hour ago to send them a picture of the actual inventory with a handwritten note beside it… I asked for clarification if it could come from the supplier, and reiterated this is pre-order inventory and not in our physical possession. Are there 3rd party processor options that you know of for my business type?

r/shopify12d ago

Understood. Unfortunately we don’t have a month. We only have until tomorrow. Probably going to have to refund the customer… this sucks Are you using any third party payment processors, or are you still using SP?

I recently launched an authenticated luxury resale and private sourcing business, and I’m hoping to hear from merchants who have been through a similar Shopify Payments review and had their payouts restored. My store received its first Shopify order on July 23. It was a five-figure luxury handbag purchase, and Shopify originally showed a payout date of July 31. On July 29, I received a notice saying payouts were paused because of a “recent increase in chargebacks or disputes.” The confusing part

apps.apple.com16d ago

yeah the delayed clawback is the part that messes people up. The payout looks final, then finance comes back months later and treats it like a recoverable debt. Document every support ticket and push for a written policy cite before they pull the bank, not after.

The problem is, is that they were taking payments regularly, no issue and the website was up. Then Shopify decided in November of 2025 to refund all of their payments? And then 8 months later charge me? If it happened right away, cool. Whatever. But that long is not cool, money was accounted for and spent awhile ago. Not like I’m gonna keep that money 6+ months just in case Shopify decides to take it back.

Better to use Wise and direct transfers. Leave Stripe for pennies

reddit.com17d ago

No, they were paying monthly. I talked to support and they confirmed Shopify refunded the entire amount, not prorated. Because they deemed the store "invalid," they reversed all of my referral payouts and said I'm responsible for paying back the commission I earned. My issue is that the store was active and paying for months before Shopify made that decision. The lack of transparency and the fact that it happened a year later is what I find very annoying...

r/shopify17d ago

Yeah you know what would have happened with a normal bank account, they’d get there money back fast. It wouldn’t even be a question.

r/CryptoCurrency17d ago

I understand that the TOS allows Shopify to do this, but that's not really the point I'm questioning. My issue is that the referral work was completed, the website was built, and the payout was issued. Shopify waited over a year to decide the referral was invalid and then pushed that cost onto me. I'm asking whether it's normal for referral programs to have an unlimited lookback period where commissions can be clawed back months or years later. If that's the policy, then that

I'm not sure what's going on then. Have the reps provided any information to you? Finally, I was able to speak to a supervisor who told me after 30 days I could call again and they'll put a stop payment on the check to which I could then have it reissued or cancel the balance transfer. I'm going to definitely try to cancel it. It'
