Credit Card Applications Keep Getting Denied Without Explanation

Young adults and first-time credit card users are experiencing frequent application rejections and frustrating review processes. They're often unsure of the reasons for denial, leading to delayed access to desired rewards and increased financial stress. This is compounded by complex application procedures and a lack of clear communication from lenders.

Did you do any preapprovals?

reddit.com7h ago

Ended up calling the recon line and after being transferred a couple of times I was eventually approved with a low credit limit.

r/CreditCards7h ago

I have been denied twice also, apparently having 26 cards and a single quicksilver that I spend $2 every month on is a dealbreaker for them (the nerve!)

That is usually true but chase star offers have in the past been very good indicators for approval, even if you were otherwise ineligible. This is a notable DP.

No luck here.

Yes, hard inquiries will do that compounded with the sharp drop in average age and newest age. You will see about a 30 point bounce back next month, and it will recover as long as you are responsible within a year. Full recovery will depend on your profile.

I detected that your post may be about utilization and its impact on credit score. Please read the info below: Ignore the 10/20/30 utilization %. It’s only applicable when you need to apply for a new line of credit, 1-2 months out. Utilization is suppose to fluctuate, can be easily manipulated, and holds no memory. It doesn’t build credit--think of it as a finishing touch when you need to optimize your score. Feel free to safely and organically use 100% of your credit limit within a month and le

Call Chase recon line and ask if they need any additional info from you. This step is usually helpful to expedite application processing.

Spread new card applications at least 3 to 6 months apart, unless you have thick credit file, which is not in your case.

i have never been this high before, applied for a BoA card at the same time as this one and was denied for the first time. Think I may be able to get it approved via their written letter recon as it would only get me to 7/12 and i have an account with them, I think I just hit my max Cl with them.

True but the Chase CSP is a starting limit of 5k.

I’m planning to apply for the CSR in September and want a gut-check from people who’ve been through this recently, since I know score alone isn’t the whole story. Current situation: • FICO 8 (Experian/TransUnion): currently 657, working to get to 690-700+ by application time • Income: ~$130k now, contractual raise to ~$138k come September (union trades job, so it’s a documented pay-scale increase, not a random bump) • Not remotely close to 5/24 • Perfect payment history — never missed a payment

reddit.com3d ago

I only will use it for work travel . I have been out of the credit card game for 20 years. I had high credit limits in the past and got me in trouble. It’s taken me this long to recover and start improving my credit. Currently I have the Amex green and VentureOne which has a low limit. Looking to simplify and probably stick to just one.

I’m curious why you wouldn’t want a high limit on either? The higher the limit, the lower your utilization reports

IIRC Chase will instantly deny apps for their higher cards w/o at least one year of history. Would wait until you get the cash back match on the anniversary of opening your Discover It card, or apply for Chase Freedom Rise, which would be upgraded to CFU after 12 months of timely payments.

P2 applied for the World of Hyatt Business card and got denied for two reasons: (1) insufficient business revenue, and (2) already extended the max total credit Chase will give her. She's at 4/24, with an Ink Cash, Ink Unlimited, Sapphire Preferred, and Freedom Unlimited, and she closed an Ink Preferred 1 day before applying. Long history with Chase, never late payment, put decent amount of spend across cards. Some more context - we closed her Ink Preferred the day before applying because we

I just applied for chases starter card and was denied. Simply just to enter their ecosystem since I am still in school. I currently only have one card and inquiry through capitol one, with a 500$ limit. I did mark myself as a student on the application. My income is well above your average college student, and rent is set to 0 since I am still living with family. What should I do from here? I don't even NEED the card, but I just want to get affiliated with them like many other people I know.

Hello I’m a 29m and I was super happy because I got approved for a Citi Diamond Preferred card. I got my credit limit and was about to finish my information when the page crashed. It was through Credit Karma so I went back in the app and there was nothing. I then tried to log into Citi using my username and password but it keeps saying “our system is experiencing delays.” I’ve checked my email and nothing! I even tried to call Citi but it’s a machine and when it asks me for personal information

I’m looking for some advice because I’ve never had this happen before. I received a preapproved offer from Credit One. I have accepted the fact that I will never get a Venture X. I am not the type of customer they are looking forward to issuing a card. Because it will never be my primary card, just a backup in my line up. https://imgur.com/a/VQ9Fsxz All data points show I should be eligible. But C1 doesn’t see it that way. Which is totally to their discretion. My credit cards are AmEx heavy, a friend of mine is a dedicated Chase user. He too can’t get a Venture X, so he cancelled all of his C1 cards and withdraw

I am absolutely disgusted with how Bilt and Cardless treat high-value customers. I have a 700+ credit score and applied for the premium Bilt Palladium Card. The automated system instantly denied me for an "identity failure”. I called their customer service line, and it was a complete joke. The agents are incredibly incompetent. They refuse to do a manual verification, they don't care about documentation, and they keep repeating like broken records that I have to wait 45 days to reapply

r/CreditCards7d ago

I am not asking Capital One to approve me for a credit card, and I am not asking them to disclose proprietary underwriting criteria or internal risk models. I simply asked whether the "prior account usage" reason in my denial letters permanently prevents me from becoming eligible for future Capital One credit cards. If it is not permanent, I asked why it remains after my bankruptcy discharge and approximately when I may become eligible again. If it is permanent, I asked Capital One to

It does feel crazy because no one would be micromanaging their card to keep the balance at 0 to begin with. An an European, to me it already feels crazy that the US system recommends to take higher limits than what is used, so utilization management is crazy in multiple ways :P

Old thread but adding a data point for others later. The same happened to me. Mine was approved with $500, which is absurdly low compared to other cards. I called 1-800-364-9648 immediately and spoke to an associate, explained, and they filed a CLI for me (didn't ask target amount), I had to provide income, assets etc. 3 days later they increased it to a lot higher. It was a soft pull. I already have another Elan card which probably helped. I have not received my card yet. So everyone can as

5/24 is the chase rule, that after you've opened 5+ new lines of credit in the last 24mo, you get pretty much auto denied. Someone I was talking to said wf cited it to them, and I was surprised by a 7/24 denial when I had no inquiries or accounts within 6mo.

What does 5/24 criteria mean?

reddit.com8d ago

Frustrating indeed as I've been there, but it can definitely grow following the 91/3 rule. After 3 statements AND 91 days from the date you were approved, you can request a CLI. All other increases can be requested after 182 days. Try your best to get your $250 bonus. It takes a little extra work to pay as soon as your charges post, but it can be done. Outside of obtaining the bonus, don't worry about trying to manipulate utilization and keeping it unnecessarily low. Just use your card a

If you have an offer that specifically states you are already approved, then you will be approved as long as you pass their identity check, have had no material changes to your credit since they did a soft pull last, and meet income and 5/24 requirements. If you want CFU, go for it. If you want CFF, go for it. It's uncommon (but not unheard of) for Chase to be your first CC (Rise being the exception) but since you have a banking relationship it is possible. Since you're only showing offe

reddit.com10d ago

With chase, you need to look up the 5/24 rule. If you fall into this, don’t even bother applying. That’s where most people get denied because their system will automatically deny you if you meet the 5/24 rule.

There’s no harm in trying, especially since you have a legitimate biz, but unless you're JPM private client, your chances are not good as you are both over 5/24 and over the limit of biz cards that chase is usually comfortably handing out. Biz approval get significantly more difficult after 2 existing chase biz cards.
