I work in hospital billing systems. You’d be surprised at how inefficient and disorganized hospitals are when it comes to tracking and billing. So it’s entirely plausible they simply forgot to add the expenses to the system and never will.

I don’t know where else to post this, so apologies if this is in the wrong place. I had a medical bill that I didn’t pay for like 5 months (I actually thought I paid it already), so I finally paid it on 4/24. Then two days ago I get an email from a collection agency saying I owe the amount of the bill ($220) as of 4/29. I called the doctor’s office and they said my account had no balance and they are not showing that any collection agency was contacted?? I’m so confused? The company has my name,

I am not a tax professional, so I was definitely just guessing that changes, not following the payment agreement probably had an effect on the statute of limitations.

I had outpatient imaging/scans done at Renown health facilities here in Nevada and applied for financial assistance over two months ago. The application is still sitting in pending status and has not been approved or denied. Today, I discovered they sent my account to an outside collection agency. Instead of sending one lump sum, they split it into multiple separate collection line items based on individual outpatient bills/services. Every single individual bill is under $500, but together they

reddit.com4d ago

Totally fair to be freaked out. Dispute it with all three credit bureaus immediately and upload those emails. Also send the collector a written debt-validation/cease-communication letter, don’t call, keep everything in writing.

r/personalfinance4d ago

There are lawyers who specialize in this, and if I understand the rules correctly, their legal fees are paid by the companies (if you win).

My parents acquired debt in my name years ago that I was not aware of, which the job discovered in a background check. They said more collections during my probationary period are grounds for immediate termination if they felt like it

Months ago my apartment application got glitched out into a complex on the opposite end of my state, hours from my job. I called the complex itself and sorted things out, and did a chargeback. Got texts from a collections agency last month, insisting I had a debt. I called the complex again and they said I owe them nothing, and to ignore the collections agency until they can verify it themselves. They verified it a week ago, and suggested I contact the agency to tell them this/show them, but I m

I have no clue what to do about this. I apparently have an account in collections; however, I was never called, emailed, or sent any letters about it. I was looking into buying a house in April 2026 and saw that I had about $650 in collections with LVNV Funding LLC. I called LVNV and they told me to contact Resurgent, I called Resurgent and they told me to contact Trakamerica, and I called Trakamerica, and they told me that my debt was in the process of being transferred to a debt collection age

I live in the US. I've been out of the country, and I missed a bill from my hospital and was sent to collections (university credit services) 5 days ago. I was told by the supervisor of the collection agency that the first 45 days is some "data validation period" and no data furnishing occurs during that period, and that if I pay off the collection within that 45 days, there won't be any data furnishing to the credit bureaus. There was also a 6 months interest free option, but

I’m really confused by what’s happened and I dont understand finance at all but this is the situation as I understand it. The other day I checked my credit report which I dont do regularly and there was an over $5,000 collection that was added in april. After looking at it I saw the original creditor is a private hospital near me so I can only assume that this from the only time I’ve been treated there as an adult which was after a car accident almost four years ago. I checked with my insurance

I have heard someone else got one of these as well as me. I just got a huge drop in my credit score, and I literally have never carried any credit card debt in my entire life, so this is very strange. It looks like it is only showing up on my TransUnion credit report, and both mine and the other person's are from October of 2025, but I just got the alert from TransUnion today. Has anyone else with a BILT account checked their TransUnion credit report and seen this? EDIT (4 People have reache

I got several pieces of mail from companies that help deal with court stuff stating that according to public records I got a lawsuit against me by discover credit. Haven't yet got mail from discover or formal papers "serving me". Settling the debt for 50% is likely. However pay-for-delete violates credit bureau policies. So they almost certainly aren't going to want to put that part in writing. "Pay-for-delete" tend to be very rare because you need the perfect combination of a collection agency that is shady enough to violate credit bureau contracts but upstanding enough to make good on their promise to you to delete the information. Not to mention beyond the agency it depends whether the person you are dea

A debt collector supposedly holding onto a debt in my name sent an email with the name of the creditor, the original holder of the debt, and the exact amount of the debt to my roommate's email address but addressed to me. I have no idea how or why they have his email address. I have not verified the debt, and I'm trying to make sure that this isn't just a scam or that something else isn't happening. Obviously I'm trying to keep it vague because I'm putting this out there

I recently got food poisoning at a very questionable restaurant that just opened up in my local area, and was admitted to the ER the same day. We had enough ample evidence it was from that restaurant and the whole hospital bill was $25k, where health insurance covered $23k of the bill, and I paid $2k out of pocket. I'm currently speaking w/ the restaurant's insurance and they offered to pay me out $4k to cover what I paid out of pocket and inconvenience fees... as long as I signed a sett

Hello. I defended myself and lost a judgment. I have heard G-T are a-holes (can I use that word here?) and that has been my experience with them thus far. They are asking for an absurd amount in settlement damages for a tiny case. Trust me, it's total BS. I have heard universally horrible stories about these people. What Is my best shot -- to get before the judge and throw myself on the mercy of the court? It's a piss-ant case with a very vindictive Plaintiff. Any advice would be welcome

r/biglaw19d ago

Yeah the original debt was $3000, maybe less and now it’s at $7k which is not feasible for me at the moment. I’m hoping they’ll lower it to the original amount and proceed with a payment plan. Seems far fetched but who knows

r/povertyfinance20d ago

This is now a lawsuit, not merely a debt-negotiation problem. “Not guilty” is criminal terminology and may not constitute a proper answer in a civil debt case. Take the complaint, summons, your response, and the plaintiff’s latest filing to the court’s self-help center, legal aid, or a consumer-debt attorney immediately. Ask whether you need to amend your answer and confirm every deadline. Do not assume you can simply wait. Before admitting anything or paying, make the plaintiff prove: The accou

r/povertyfinance20d ago

You should put this in r/law But my guess is that if you tell the collector that you were 17 they would have to release it

r/tax21d ago

It's been years since I've been in court and then it was for eviction not claims so I'm not conversant with small claims. I did win with eviction but that was easy to prove as they either paid the rent of they didn't. You would have to make sure you had all your documents necessary to prove your case and you may get lucky in that the opposing party won't show up in which case you should be able to get a judgement against the offending party.

How does one do this?

reddit.com23d ago

You need a lawyer. They can garnish their wages, taxes or put a lien on their property.

r/smallbusiness24d ago

Quick question for anyone who has ever transitioned jobs: Has a former employer ever sent a collection agency after you to claw back a sign-on bonus? 💸 I’m currently staring at a $4,600 demand letter because I moved on a few months shy of a year. I absolutely want to protect my credit score, but I also don't want to hand over thousands of dollars without pushing back first. Did you negotiate the agency down to a lower settlement, set up a zero-interest payment plan, or get your new company

Hi, I'm going through something very similar. Does anyone have any advice? I've received a debt collection letter for £615 from OVO relating to a property I lived at with my partner. The confusing part is that none of the energy bills was ever in my name . When I was between homes, I accidentally set up an OVO account for the property, but I realised the mistake and closed it within an hour of opening it . After that, I never received a single bill, statement, or any other communication

How much was it? You would more than likely have to fight with the collection agency which sounds like a nightmare. Is it small enough to just say lesson learned and move on?

For context, I was charged while living with my family a year after breaking a lease (almost 4 years ago). Unfortunately, the apartment complex I’m currently living at is allegedly closing soon due to nearby construction, but they’re not verifying anything to anyone. Heyo, I have a small student loan debt that went to collections. Hi all, I got an email today saying a new account was added to my credit report. When I went to check it, it was a $2,300 bill from the "NTL RECOVERY AGENCY." I assume this is a medical debt, as it says the original creditor is a local ER. I am a little freaked out! I had a massive ambulance bill reduced by 50% by the ambulance company for being uninsured. I provided a payment over the phone during that conversation. 2 months later I realized "it's been awhile since I made a payment" so I went online and made another payment.
