“Hobbyist painter. Acrylic. I like this painting up close with a light on it, but find it’s quite dark from far away and glossy. Besides this, any tips to improve? Thanks everyone!”

“I’m trying to paint around ten paintings to submit to an exhibit and I’d like to hear if anyone has critiques. I’ve never attempted a realistic sunset and I can’t tell if it’s okay because it feels not worthy. It took me two and a half hours and it’s 12x12. Any tips are appreciated too. submitted by /u/Lost_Requirement1479 [link] [comments]”

“This is my first time painting on canvas with acrylics! I wanted to paint a photo of my grandmother, my great-grandmother, and me. I didn’t really love how the background turned out, and I’m not sure if I used the right technique. I just went with the flow and tried to capture the essence of the photo. I’d love to hear your advice! What could I improve, and what would you do differently? Any tips for a beginner? submitted by /u/agnimod07 [link] [comments]”

“Can I have critique/any opinions on my most recent landscape painting? This was a gift for my aunt based on a photo she took. Acrylic on stretched canvas. I included progress pictures and the final product. I'm not happy with how the sand, kayak, and greenery on the left side turned out. I like the waves and clouds, I usually do decent at those, but for some reason the beach was frustrating me so much. I have done a decent job with trees and greenery in the past but this palm tree kicked my”

“Photos shown include the piece and my living room for context. The piece is a 40” round canvas painted with purple acrylic (more of a dark plum base in person) with paint drops in two similar purple variations (heavy body plus heavy gel) to show texture, movement, and depth. How can I make it better, or should I just leave it as is? Does it look like an amateur piece or something I could have bought for a lot of $? submitted by /u/Witty_Evening_618 [link] [comments]”

“It was meant to look good like this, but something is off. Something is missing, and I know it’s probably because of the shape of the color blocks, because similar paintings look good. Taking suggestions submitted by /u/AdministrativeAd4674 [link] [comments]”

“Reference photo above, acrylic painting on canvas below. I work on a painting about once a year but don’t have formal training beyond public school art class. I feel like I’m not very good at capturing light. I was excited about emulating the way the light made the leaves in this photo glow as well as the sun rays but in my opinion my painting fell flat. What could I try to improve my next one? submitted by /u/Adventurous_Term_616 [link] [comments]”

“Hi! Looking for improvement tips, so I wanted to share some of my first paintings, started yesterday and been banging them out trying to intuition my way to improvement but I feel like it’s not working. I understand it takes years but I figured taking some constructive criticism can accelerate that. Bottom left is my first one, latest one is the one to the far right although it’s not finished. Using Gouache on Bristol sketchbook. Don’t have any formal art education, I’ve attached some art I’m in”

“Hi everyone! I recently finished this acrylic painting and applied a coat of varnish. Unfortunately, I struggled to apply it evenly because it dried very quickly, and I noticed some brush marks on the surface. I’m wondering if I should apply a second coat of varnish, possibly a matte varnish, to improve the overall finish. Would a second coat help, or could it make the brush marks more noticeable? Should I lightly sand the surface first, or would that risk damaging the painting? I’d really appre”

“Hiii total amateur here looking for extra eyes for feedback and advice! My painting is the left photo and the inspo photo is on the right. The inspo is likely acrylic while mine is a mix of watercolor and gauche so of course there are some constraints. However, I feel like the positioning of the elements on mine, especially the transition from the front shallow water to the deeper more distant water just looks off. Also I can’t seem to get the boat reflection right. Thanks!! submitted by &”

“Hi there!! These are my first ever 2 paintings and I would like some tips and tricks from you guys :). I am using the cheapest paint/pencils/canvas you could probably find hahaha. I was wondering what things I could improve at such an early stage of my painting hobby. I also was wondering how to get the pencils dry again after using them. I’m using water and a rag but that doesn’t make the pencils completely dry. Let me know what you guys think ! 😃 submitted by /u/AnonymousBlueKoala”

“Hello - I’ve been a pencil artist since forever, but I’ve gotten into painting with acrylics lately. I’m looking for help and advice on how to make this look more.. realistic. I’ve not really had a reference photo, but just built it up as I went along, inspired by various landscape pics. What I’m trying to achieve: a landscape with big majestic mountains in the distance, clouds surrounding the mountains, bright blue skye with the sun glowing. The water I’ve tried to make appear dark but with the”
