“When it rains, the water does not fully flow off of the roof into the gutter, half of it falls into the gap of the gutter. This is causing water damage to the soffit that I will also need to fix. But the question is have today is, is there a “simple” fix to the water problem?”
r/Roofing

Homeowners are experiencing leaks where the gutter meets the roof, even with a drip edge already installed. They question whether to raise the gutter or modify the drip edge to resolve the issue, particularly on flat roofs.

“Slope on the left - the water is running off the shingle row above the valley, and not in the center of the valley, totally missing the gutter. It also appears to be running from behind the shingle. Roof is 3 months old. submitted by /u/U-96 [link] [comments]”

“What is the right way to fix this? The water from the top gutter should flow out to the lower gutter, then out to the drain. Instead, it is wrapping back under the end, and walking out past the lower gutter. It then drops to the ground causing a puddle. The upper gutter end is open. Is this as simple bending it? Do I need to lower this end? Do you put a drain, or pop a hole in the top gutter? submitted by /u/sumrunner [link] [comments]”

“Just had a new roof installed. Owens Corning Duration shingles - not sure if they are durable enough to not show wear over time from water draining directly onto them, or if I should get a downspot extension. If I do need an extension, are there any of that look better aesthetically vs a typical downspout? submitted by /u/letsgopatss [link] [comments]”

“We recently had our roofs redone and they installed new gutters as well. Is this open spout ok for our gutter connection between two different roof levels? If it makes any difference, we also installed Shur Flo gutter guards (as shown in the second picture on a different section of the gutters). I’d like to confirm that this has been installed properly before completing our payment. Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/natsattacks [link] [comments]”

“Two-story home, split-level roof, built in 2014. A few years ago, the roof was replaced and that fixed most leaks, but one leak remained. The water comes into the home at the dining area, which is next to the kitchen. Above the kitchen there is a balcony. I suspect the leak is somewhere where the roof meets the balcony. Video attached for reference. In need of a roofing company to find the source of the leak and fix it. I have it narrowed down to which area it is coming from. Thank you. su”

“Hi. Just got a new roof done and the corner slate overhangs the old gutter so I'm pretty sure I'll get a stream of water coming down with the heavy rain. Is it possible to get a new 'end cap' or something to bring the old one out several mm to avoid having to pay for a whole new system ? How tricky of a job is it if so? :/ Thanks. submitted by /u/InTheHeat0fLisbon [link] [comments]”

“With all the rain we’ve been having I noticed a drip in my crawl space. It’s dripping on both sides of the rafter. (See pics) House has a cape cod style roof. This leak is about 8 feet (going up) from the gutter. Roof about 15 years old, (shingles and plywood) No rotted plywoodwood, no rotted rafter. Shingles are intact and clean from the outside. No trees in sight. Is there anything I can do from the inside to stop it from leaking either temporarily or until I get the funds to call a roofer? Th”

“Roofers flashed and caulked a spot where the fascia board was about 2-3 inches shorter than the length of the of the roof. Spray foam had been previously sprayed behind the original gutters to fill the gap, so it’s basically just foam at the end there. I can’t tell if this will prevent or cause issues. It’s going to get covered by the gutters and not easily maintained in a few days. And aren’t gutters installed behind this? There’s a rivet through the drip edge… I really don’t understand what’s”

“My roofer ran out of metal mid job and won’t have more until next week, and my gutter guys are coming in a few days. Roofer says the drip edge is all set and the gutters can go up. “We have water dripping behind the gutter. The classic capillary action due to low slope and cupping shingles near the eave. The presidential roof is 12 years old. I say the gutter was installed too high, but I don’t think at this point the shingles are gonna flatten themselves out. This proposal makes no sense to me; does it to you guys? What would you recommend? Thanks in advance for any advice. submitted by /u/Fit_Internet1383 [link] [comments]”

Top window was leaking some as well but not nearly as bad. 3rd is the kickout flashing and gutter which is right above bottom window. Fourth shows where the siding is too tight and you can see where the roof meets the wall. Water follows the drip-edge flange downward (red arrow), hits the back of the gutter, and then drops straight down the outside instead of flowing into the gutter. The blue arrow shows the direction of water flow inside the gutter. Because of the existing gutter slope, I can't simply lower this end without potentially creating another problem. “Hello all, asking for advice on my roof- I just had new gutters and gutter guards installed in the spring of this year and I was just on my roof to clear debris that’s collected up over top the guards 🙄 and I’m noticing lifting of my asphalt shingles along the edge of the roof line. Is some lifting normal? Along the edge I mean. It’s worse in some areas compared to others and I’m wondering if getting these guards installed either caused it or is making it worse. How effed is it. I never had dripping like this with the old wood, soffit or fascia. After a big rain storm at the end of last month is how I discovered this dripping. “I'm debating what to do regarding this downspout (see picture). Currently runoff of water from the 2nd floor roof and 1st floor roof just flows down the shingles into gutters. Over the years it has caused some leakage on the corner. Suggestion from gutter installer is either: Just have a separate downspout from 2nd floor to ground bypassing the gutter (red). OR Connect downspout to gutter (yellow) Quoted $3600 for option red with 3x4 downspouts and 5" gutters everywhere. Not in picture”

In the process, I discovered that it looks like my gutter apron is not actually going down into my gutter. I might have my anatomy wrong, so please correct me. “I went up to the attic and noticed this side of the house. It rained yesterday for roughly 8 hours. I don’t know if I noticed this before. The attic is very hot and it was humid today. Is this water from a leaky roof?? It doesn’t feel wet but the material is very brittle. What is throwing me off is that it is the shape of the roof. But I guess that is consistent with water possibly? Can it be oil from the wood that accumulate and I just didn’t notice until now? submitted by /u/syphar”

“This roof is on a carport that butts up against the house/siding and its leaking underneath, not thru any of the shingles but thru this flashing when i spray it with a garden house. I called a roofer but they quoted me a whole roof- seems silly when the shingles still have life. “Just bought a house and it's our first rainstorm. I found out that this gutter is leaking where there appears to be white stuff at the top, and black stuff at the bottom. Is this cement, sealant, or caulk? I posted a photo of the black stuff under the gutter in a separate comment. The water is running along the wall and creating a pool of water next to my foundation. “I know I have waited way too long to fix this. No gutters on the home - the water runs down the vinyl fascia and seems to wick under into the wooden soffits. It was originally caulked along the edge, but that has limited effectiveness. I'm looking for ideas to fix. Someone mentioned that a bead of caulk on the bottom edge of the fascia would create a drip line before the water reaches the soffit. I'm also wontering if some type of flashing might help. https://preview.redd.it/b2cyqblw5knh”

“We got new gutters in 2024 and they put them in offset from each other… needless to say that led to water dripping down the siding whenever it rains heavily. Last week we had an exterior company come out to try to fix the problem but the solution looks like a step backward. They built a channel with sheet metal that collects the water and drains it directly down the siding. What do you think? Is there an easier solution? I plan the call the company to come back out but not sure what to say or as”

“My mother’s home has an aluminum porch with a 5” gutter that always overflows and floods the back yard. The ranch style house has had additions with new shingled roof sections so the porch’s gutter catches rain from three different roof sections and itself. “I have a roof extension that’s quite shallow and is currently getting leaks on that side of the house. A roofer has suggested extending the downpipe so it runs into the main gutter, but the pipe would have to run over the top of the extension roof/slates to get there. I’d personally prefer to run the downpipe vertically down the side of the house, but that would mean it goes into/over what is effectively my neighbour’s airspace. I could potentially get their permission, but I’m not sure whether”

“I own a townhouse / terraced house in Ireland. There is a a 2 story flat roof extension with a fiberglass cover (for context flat roofs usually have a felt cover in UK & Ireland, but some have a fiberglass cover). “Hi! I recently acquired a barn which had a new metal roof installed over an existing shingle roof. It seems to me like the drip edge isnt correct as the water is able to run off the metal roof and down the fascia board, bypassing the gutter. I know little about roofs, but I am quite handy. Issue seems fairly obvious, water doesn't cleanly flow into the gutter, it adheres to the drip edge and runs behind it (like a bad teapot).
