“No gurgling noise - everything seems fine except the smell. [re: Foul Smell After Installing New Faucet]”
“Make sure to waft it with your hand like they taught us in science class! [re: Constant bad smell coming from the kitchen sink and dishwasher]”
“Hoping someone with more knowledge than I might be able to help: I recently installed new faucets and sink stoppers throughout our house, and although most seem to be fine, there is a noticeable odor coming from our master bathroom sinks after turning on the water. The smell, which is sulfuric, seems to be coming from the drain and not the faucet itself. Any ideas what the problem could be? Although I did change out the sink’s downspout to the p-trap to accommodate the new installations, nothing”
“Just curious your thoughts on this, when the dishwasher is in use, smells come from the sink drain. This would make me think somethings wrong with P-trap. Been installed this way for years, never noticed it untill recently. submitted by /u/Grilledcheese20 [link] [comments]”
“I recently bought an older house, and the PVC plumbing under my double kitchen sink has a bad smell, especially after using it. I also noticed some gunk coming out of the pipe ends. Can anyone tell me if this setup is installed correctly? I will change it but just not sure if it needs to be put back the same way. Any advice on the proper way to hook this up with the garbage disposal would be appreciated. submitted by /u/TheVoidShadow [link] [comments]”

“Is it bad from every cold tap in the house. ? [re: Weird tasting tap water (inconsistent soapy/bitter taste) - Landlord being a **** and refusing to call out a plumber]”
“We just had our basement pipes redone with pe-rt pipes which are similar to pex but not cross-linked from my understanding. The taps in our main bathroom now have a really weird sour, plastic, old sponge type of smell. It seems to be disappearing a bit from one sink but worse in the kitchen. A few days later now, I also noticed a rubbery film on my hands after washing them as if there were acrylates or some kind of polymer in the water - you know that friction feeling when you have something stu”
“We're having our basement suite pipes redone (pex pipes) and they have shut off the water for the house except for one bathroom. There's only hot water coming out of even the cold tap and the water smells really bad. Hard to explain but sour and like a very old wet rag. The smell is on my hands after washing and I'm worried when they turn the water back on water from all the taps will smell like this. Anyone know what it could be? Also concerned because I washed some of my dishes and”
“It's usually after a hot shower that causes a stronger smell so that could be it!”
“Moved into a house that was abandoned for a few years. Everything plumbing wise works great but one of the bathroom tubs stinks like septic. I have tried every simple solution to no avail. Today I took a look down the roof vent and does this look like something clogging it or is this just the transition? submitted by /u/williamthe3rdd [link] [comments]”
“Some shower drains can smell pretty rank even if they are properly sealing out sewer gas. Purging them with a large volume of water all at once (block the drain off, let the pan fill up a ways, and then drain it all at once; or dump a large bucket in all at once) can help. Plunging it for a while then letting water run can help too. You can also clean the drop pipe before the trap with a bottle brush or similar if your drain cover can be easily removed for that purpose which can help.”
“Hey my tenants keep complaining about a smell coming from their tank. I replaced the anode last year with a Corro-Protect and seemed to have helped for a while. I remember when I tried to drain it I had a hell of a time, I assume there loads of sediment. Tenants keep thinking it’s the well water that needs cleaning but my house has no issues so I highly doubt it’s the water but more their tank. Is it worth really trying to get it to flush, get a plumber or go to the plumbing store (not Home Depo”
“Most common is gunk in the overflow or on the underside of the pop up, not the trap. Pull the stopper, scrub it and the throat with a bottle brush and hot soapy water, then flush the overflow with hot water and a bit of bleach. If the trap's easy, drop it and clean it out too. If it still stinks with a clean trap and water in it, then start thinking vent issues.”
“Hi, I have a bathroom sink in a condo that has been giving off a bad smell when the water is running. To figure out whether it was actually the water, I had the tenant fill a clean glass with water from the bathroom faucet, take it into another room, and smell it there. The water itself did not seem to smell, so it appears the odor is coming from the sink/drain when the water is running. They've tried pouring drain cleaner down the drain several times, but it hasn't helped. I'm think”
“I’m having an issue with sewer gas smell in my bathroom. The other day my son clogged our toilet. It wasn’t an overly stubborn clog, but it didn’t clear from plunging so I used my auger and cleared it no problem. In the next couple of days I started to notice the smell of sewer gas, so I figured I might’ve broken the wax seal with the pressure from plunging and decided to pull the toilet and swap the wax. I didn’t notice any cracks or issues with the flange. After reinstalling the toilet I thoug”
Hey all. When I take a shower in the morning there always a really strong eggy/sewer smell. I’ve tried using drain unblocker and nothing has changed Any ideas what I could try…
“Hi All, I’m trying to work out what might be causing an eggy smell in our kitchen (where the water pipes are in the photo). I’ve worked out it’s triggered by the bathroom sink running (which are the pipes on the right wall in the photo). The white vertical pipe and blue hose are from our washing machine. We’re getting it replaced today so the waste hose would normally be going into that white pipe and then the blue hose is the water in. I think the smell is coming from the waste pipe but I don’t”
“But it was too late for that one, since the sediment of the old water and old anode were in the tank, and the water just kept picking up the smell and bacteria from the sediment.”
“I moved into a rental recently only to find out that the water smelled like rancid, like sulfur and iron only worse. This house shares a well with the other tenants next-door. The smell was in both hot and cold water, but more intense in the hot. We talked to the landlord and she said she'd never noticed a smell here, and the neighbors don't have any smell either. This house was vacant for 7 months before we moved in, and the landlord had Culligan install a water softener a month before”
“hello, looking for some help on a sour, ugly smell from under the kitchen sink of a pretty old home. We tried some pads, covering the bottom, but maybe it’s the pipes or the insulation? Any help is much appreciated, thanks. submitted by /u/dp3260 [link] [comments]”
“I appreciate the opinions. This is my new Construction house and I noticed the smell coming from the bathroom (we have a septic) I think it’s the sink here because we had to put a reverse P-trap (one of the plumbers guys initially did it put the drain too high we cut the drywall but it needed to be cut somewhere else in the stack so he told me a reverse P trap will do the job) but never mention any smell, is this do you think the cause or could it be something else? I do have another bathroom up”
“I moved into my house 4 years ago and didn't realize that I needed to descale. I live in Los Angeles and the water is pretty hard. We have lime buildup on all our faucets. The water heater was manufactured in 2017. I have no records from the previous owner. I called a plumber to check it out, and they said I need to replace the unit since I haven't done any maintenance. They will replace it for 7000. I said piss off. They said if I descale it, my unit will just break. I didn't believ”
“My kitchen sink smells terrible!!! especially while the dishwasher is running. I’ve replaced the dishwasher drain hose multiple times and the smell improves for a few weeks but always returns. I’ve also cleaned the dishwasher and filter multiple times. There is a factory high loop on the back of the dishwasher. I know the pipe from the disposal to the P-trap has a slight reverse slope because the drain entering the wall is fairly high. Does anything in this setup look like the likely cause? Or i”
“What do you mean? Like how long they do it? Its possible they aren’t doing it right”
“My sister is on a well next to a river in southern Colorado, they had a large flood last year. They couldn’t use their water for a while because it was fouled by the flood. Now they have a water filtration system in place but now only their hot water strongly smells like sulfur. All of the water comes from their well, same source, why does heating it make it smell that way? submitted by /u/Dramone-1956 [link] [comments]”
“It comes out from the top left and then loops behind the sink and down and attaches to black pipe”
“for the last couple weeks I’ve noticed a strong sewage smell when my dishwasher starts. It seems to be coming from the kitchen sink. It fades after a bit as the washer continues running. There’s no smell from the sink otherwise, and there’s no slow drainage at the kitchen sink. We’re on septic and I was wondering if that could be related so I’ve booked someone to pump the septic this weekend but I was told that might not be the issue. I also noticed a very mild sewage smell from the bathroom sin”

“Hello all, Every time I turn on the hot water in my apt it’s smells like mushrooms, it’s only hot water from the shower, it has been happening for 2 months now and we have tried everything we could think of. Initially we thought it was the drain but after the PM/maintenance sup came to look at it he said the drain looks really clean. We still tried to clean it just in case. Additionally there is water in the p trap and no leaks as far as he could see. Next step he replaced the water heater to an”
“There seems to be some kind of smell coming from the drain of my bathroom sink. I’ve treated it with Drano, scrubbed everything, it keeps coming back. Anybody have any suggestions on how to tackle this? My only thought is it could be something in the U part of the drain pipe, but I really don’t want to have to take it apart. Do you think getting the stuff you use for septic tanks that eats the sludge would work? submitted by /u/GirlWhoWoreGlasses [link] [comments]”
“That long G-trap is the cause of the smell. The water is laying level with the pipe, so the gases have room to go through the pipes and out your drain. After you replace your studor vent and correct that trap you shouldn't have anymore gasses”
“Hi There is a shower we have that usually smells. I keep cleaning it but after a few days, the smell starts again. To clean, I usually use some pipe cleaner once every few months and let it sit for a few hours and then pour very hot water. But I feel like on rainy days and on very hot days the smell becomes much stronger. Is there anyway I can remove this to see what’s underneath it and scrub it well or is it sealed (other than the cover). Thanks For reference, I live in Spain. submitted b”
“The purpose of the trap is to “prevent” seeer gases entering the building. Only problem, must be an effective trap in the drain line.”
“At my house, we’ve been dealing with yellow water. We had a plumber come out and inspect and they said it was most likely the hot water tank. We have all pex plumbing, so we figured it was not galvanized plumbing causing the issue. Went ahead and had the new hot water tank put in however, 24 hours later after running the hot water for probably 35 to 45 minutes, the water is still kind of orangish yellow. Could it just be that there was a lot of sediment buildup on the lines and it’s still just r”
“We have a large shower with a regular shower head plus a rainfall shower head, and plumbing for a toilet you can see to the right. We get a horrible smell coming from the shower drain on-and-off that makes me gag, and me are having issues with drain flies. The contractor who did this messed some other things up so I don’t fully trust it was done the right way. Please tell me we can fix the smell! Edit: a contractor did this work for us. I do not attempt to do my own plumbing. If it was done inco”
“That piece on the top is a one way valve to let air go in when water is passed down the out pipe. If you are smelling something that valve is most likely needing replaced https://www.homedepot.com/p/STUDOR-Redi-Vent-with-PVC-Adapter-Air-Admittance-Valve-20353/203111264”

“Hello all. We bought this place about 6 months ago. It's on a septic system and we have noticed a septic smell under the kitchen sink every so often, and it comes out of our bathroom REALLY bad whenever the barometric pressure drops during a sudden storm. But here lately I've been smelling it almost all of the time coming from our bathroom. The previous owner was a DIY guy who had passion, but not much talent. My father noticed during his last visit that the master bathroom where we have”
“A sulfur smell usually means there’s something going on with the water source, drain, or water heater. I’d try to narrow down whether the smell is coming from the water itself or from the drain before choosing a fix.”
“Note that this is not my own home, but I am temporarily living here for two weeks because my own apartment is being renovated; however, this shower drain smells so bad that I have already covered it with a plastic cap, which helps, but it still does not stop everything. Can someone give me advice on what to use to stop the odor? I know there is supposed to be a normal drain cap, but it is gone, and I guess there is only a flat decorative cap above it. Edit: Yes, I know it looks disgusting, but I”
“Whenever it's been a few days since I've used my washing machine and I run a cycle, a bad (eggy) smell comes out of the sink. This has happened since moving into my new flat a few months back. I've tried running washing machine cleaning products and checking the filter but this hasn't solved the issue. If I run a couple of washes back to back the 2nd one isn't a problem it's always the first. From a bit of research I think the issue is the drain pipe, which should potenti”
“Moved into a 100 year old home and inspector didn’t mention any concerns about the plumbing….a year and a half later, we are getting rotten egg stench every day, mostly after taking hot showers/ baths. We’ve “localized” the problem to this, the big old cast iron stack pipe in the basement. I know nothing about plumbing, but obviously there’s an opening in the system somewhere here to cause the strong smell. Where do we even begin to locate the crack/opening? It’s a large pipe, and much of it is”
“We've been having issues lately with smells in an upper floor bathroom, mainly from the toilet, sometimes from the sink. We have a forty year old septic tank that just got inspected and they said everything's fine on their end. Before I call a plumber, does anyone have any insight as to what could be causing this? The other bathrooms don't smell at all and the vent up on the roof is not blocked. The smell usually occurs after using the shower in that bathroom and goes away after flus”
“These are nickel colored overflows. Every couple of weeks they are coated in a black funk. I also feel like this bathroom tends to have a more sulphuric smell when running the sinks. In well water with a whole house filter. It’s a master that was remodeled before we moved in. Outside of continuing to clean it, any other tips? submitted by /u/Excellent_Race_2956 [link] [comments]”
“I've tried everything I can think of. Baking soda and vinegar down the drain, drain cleaner, even took apart the p-trap and cleaned it out. The sink itself is clean, no visible mold or gunk. But every time I run water, there's this musty, almost rotten smell that comes up for like 30 seconds then fades. It's only this sink, not the shower or kitchen. Anyone dealt with this? Could it be the overflow drain? The faucet aerator? I'm going crazy here. submitted by /u/Squas”
“(Renting) There's a buildup around my bathroom sink drain that comes up black and brown when wiped up with a paper towel, and I get a whiff of a kind of sour rotten egg smell when it's disturbed by the paper towel or sometimes by water. Can I get rid of it myself or is this a maintenance call? submitted by /u/honeybeatss [link] [comments]”
“I recently moved back into my apartment after renting it for 12 months to find my kitchen has a terrible stale water smell. I tried using bi-carb soda and vinegar without success to eliminate the smell. Upon looking in the drain there is a layer of grime all the way down - unsure if it’s new or always been there. What do you recommend I do next? Is there an option to clean this out with chemicals or am I up for a plumbing bill? submitted by /u/InvincibleQuantity [link] [comment”
“That’s methane. If you hold a lighter up to your faucet, I bet it will catch. I spent about a lot of money on a methane-vent to remedy it.”
“Hi all! For the past month or so, I’ve noticed that anytime I take a shower (walk in shower, no tub), a different sink in my bathroom (jacuzzi tub on the other side of the room) produces a gnarly sulphuric smell. Any ideas? I’m planning on calling a plumber but thought I’d come here first to get some opinions. Thanks! :) submitted by /u/sylveons-ribbons [link] [comments]”
“We moved in in March. Quickly had some back up. Had the house line snaked by the plumber. Que a month later. We start smelling things slightly again. He said the sewer has like "farts" here and there so some was okay. Now were smelling it a lot again. Its a really old house. Im wondering if theres likely some underground line issues. Going to call again and ask about a camera inspection but just thought id ask here too submitted by /u/Ordinary-Plastic-342 [link] [comm”

“As title, I had the water company out and they did a smoke test in and around the drain cover in my back garden and said there was no issue. But it is consistent, any time I run the sink tap for 10 seconds, or I flush the toilet, I get a surge of sulphur smell coming up from the sewers. The pipe the sink and toilet go to are both in the back garden as far as I can tell. If there's any more info you need please let me know and I'll provide! Any ideas? Solutions that don't involve an e”
“Last month, the building replaced the hot water valves in the building. We’ve been told the work is done and they’re not touching anything right now and that it’s safe to drink. For some reason when I do laundry, my clothes comes out smelling a bit off and I just took a shower and smelled my hair and it was similar. I saw a post about Toronto’s algae problem and think it could be that but I’m scared it’s something with my building. A couple of notes: - the clothes from my laundry machine have th”
