“Hi everyone, I have an outside Central Air system tied into my furnace. I heard it making some strange noises, then turned off. I checked my breaker box and the breaker labeled "AC" is popped. If I turn the breaker on, the motor moans and…”
“Sorry for my rudimentary question but it’s for a family friend and I’m in a predominantly gas furnace market. I’m measuring 0.2 ohms between N.O and COM on the relay. Blower motor runs constantly as well. We’re looking at a bad relay board is that correct? submitted by /u/logdognotnice [link] [comments]”
“My ac has been on/off short cycling for 15 seconds but only sometimes. it started during the heatwaves and i assumed it was just due to the fact it was so god awful hot outside but atleast once everyday, the unit outside tries to start up, runs for 15 seconds, then shuts off while the inside fan blows just regular air for a few minutes before shutting off as well. for some reason it also seems to work better if the temperature is set colder than i actually want but i dont know if thats a coincid”
“Looking for advice on what my options are. This is 2008 system with a Trane xl16i condenser and a xv95 furnace. The compressor on the condenser just died, it has a short to ground. I’m located in the CO front range. Here are quotes I have so far: - Replace compressor: $4,000 - New outdoor AC unit & Coil: $7,500 - Bosch IDS Ultra Heat Pump integrated with existing xv95: $8,500 - Bosch IDS Ultra Heat Pump with new GHP97 furnace: $13,500 On the heat pump options I am sticking with dual fuel as”
“I’ve been having ongoing HVAC issues since the winter. Management keeps sending the same technicians, but they just replace the refrigerant/gas, which only fixes the problem temporarily. In the winter, the apartment wouldn’t heat properly, and the air coming from the vents was the same temperature or colder than the thermostat reading. Now in the summer, the thermostat is set to 72°F, but the air coming from the vents is only getting down to about 69°F. The tech says there’s no leak because the”

“The original capacitor is so rusted that I couldn't see any word so I just took a picture and replaced with a new one, based on some wiring help search. The condenser was running but no cold air coming indoor. An hour later, condenser stopped running. Did I wire wrong? The first one is the original and the second one is the new connection. “I turned my AC off when I went out on a week vacation. It was working fine before, but I came home and it's not cooling at all. I called an HVAC guy, and he said that the fan was spinning in the wrong direction. He put that leaf on there, and showed that it was sucking in instead of blowing out. Then he said that the capacitor was good (a bad one might explain it spending the wrong way), so the motor is probably failed. And then he tested the compressor and said that it's dead so I would”
“TLDR: AC stopped working, fan wasn’t blowing, replaced 10ų capacitor with 5ų(see photo) since that’s what was spec on the motor. Worked for a little bit, now not working. So I took some photos and did some research. Turned off the breaker and the unit itself. Disconnected the wires and discharged the old capacitor. After seeing that the blower motor itself needed only 5ų, I went and bought a new one. Cleaned out the blower motor with water and simple green, connected it all back together and con”
“Hi all, I came home from vacation to my HRV humming and the fans not blowing. Don’t have a local HVAC company close by, so hoping to do some troubleshooting (and a good cleaning) prior to calling someone in from the nearest town. It’s a ven-mar Vanee 190H if that helps at all. I’ve always cleaned the filters in the spring, but hadn’t really stuck my head inside to see the state of the hamster wheel. Thanks for any help you can provide! submitted by /u/Limno [link] [comments]”
“Went to bed was working fine woke up at 230am. Woke up to 84 degrees, AC breaker is tripped. Changed capacitors, I reset breaker turn AC on trips breaker. Any ideas? submitted by /u/grb13 [link] [comments]”
“I have a Kelvinator inverter split system (exact model unknown sorry) that came with my flat and has been working fine, including heating, as recently as last week. I currently have balcony works being done. The outdoor AC unit was moved at the start of the works, then moved back to its original position last week. When it was moved back, the power to my unit tripped. Since then AC shows an E1 error instead of the temperature and won’t heat, although the fan still works. The builder had someone”
“Last month our 6 year old AC kept tripping the breaker. We had an HVAC company out, they did some tests, told us our numbers were ok, it was probably an electrical issue and to swap out the breaker at the panel. We did that, breaker still kept tripping. They came back, told us we had a bad compressor, luckily we were still in warranty and were able to have Goodman send us another one. $900 later and things seemed ok. Now 1 month later we're tripping our breaker again. Any thoughts? Possibly”
“Just moved into a home with the ECM mentioned as the blower motor for our HVAC system. Just last night the blower started intermittently turning on and off again. It'll sometimes make a vibration sound as it's ramping up, which is when it seems to fail. Sometimes it'll ramp up just fine and there are no issues at all. I've read up on the motors themselves and have seen that I can just replace the module rather than the whole squirl fan and motor together, but I'm not 100% sur”
“I have an original tk the house 96 system that has stopped cooling. Blower is running condenser doesn’t turn on. Getting 24v to the condenser from thermostat. Initial testing showed a good capacitor, swapped it out to test with a known good one just in case, no change. Contactor switch had one button down and one out. Main breaker was tripped when testing. I pulled the disconnect and reset the breaker. Confirmed 240v at disconnect. Plugged disconnect back in. Heard a loud “pop” and main breaker”
“- TRANE XR 4TTR4036L1000AA is not cooling and the fan doesn't run. - I bought this home 2 months ago and the unit was manufactured in 2016. No problems with it until last night. - I replace the old thermostat with an an Aqara w200 thermostat 3 weeks ago. No issues with it after install. - While the thermostat is set to cool, every 3 or 4 minutes the unit outside makes a humming sound for a couple of seconds. The fan inside of it doesn't move at all during or after this humming sound. - I”
“Any thoughts what's going on here? Most posts seem to say if fan won't start and I can get it spin, it's the capacitor, it if it won't move at all it's the motor. Well I've got this. Sometimes it doesn't run at all. Other times it runs fine for hours. Unit is 8.5 years old and still under a 10 year parts and labour. It's a small family company and their main tech has showed up twice and both times it decides to run fine so he's like how can I fix what isn'”

“This is a 20-year old Carrier AC unit. There is some oil on the condenser fan as shown in the photo. Is this normal with age, and/or is it a sign of perhaps imminent failure? I don’t plan to sink any repair money into a unit this old, so wondering if I should be looking in to costs and options for replacing. The furnace is also 20 years old, so I’d be replacing both. Trying to decide if I wait until one or the other dies (likely to happen at the most inopportune time, I know) or proactively repl”
“This is not my domain of expertise nor my first language, so I'll try to be clear but I might spit out nonsense here. I have a central ventilation and heating/cooling system with an electrical furnace in the basement and a heat pump outside. I have an Ecobee thermostat connected to it all. It used to work properly, but for the last 6 weeks or so, the cooling (and even heating) just stopped working. I had a technician come and inspect my unit but he said that everything was fine and that he d”
“My 38 year old Rudd UAHE-036jas stopped working properly this week. One day there was cooling, afternoon it stopped. I looked and saw the wire melted off of the capacitor. The photo shows the oval 40/3mfd capacitor that was in place, it is about 5 or 7 years old. I replaced the capacitor with the property 35/5 size recommended by Rudd. Unit turned on, ran fine till the fan cut out after about 15 minutes. Compressor probably ran an addition 45 minutes without any fan, but darn it seems like a tan”
“So at first we thought it was the condenser fan motor so we got a brand new one but the main fan only vibrate doesn't spin while making sure i rewired exactly how the last one was i noticed this connection is just dangling loosely is this suppose to be like this submitted by /u/InternationalTrick30 [link] [comments]”
“Our A/C stopped blowing cold air (still blowing, but not cold). Had an HVAC professional come out to diagnose the problem. He opened up the panel on the outdoor compressor and the capacitor was visibly ruined. He then hooked up a meter to the compressor and said it was shorted and that since this system used R22, our only option was to replace the entire system at a cost of $14,500 and the Trane brand is what they install. Our current system is a 5 ton York that is over 10 years old but probably”
“I know very little about HVAc so please bare that in mind: fan stopped running in the condenser. Its the middle of summer and I assumed my usual guy would be swamped. Thought I would take a stab at it. I started with the capacitor. Pulled it out to find that the fan isn't even connected to the capacitor. The capacitor did read zeros though. I'm gonna replace but thought y'all might have an explanation. Or something I've more than likely overlooked submitted by /u/hard”
“I have asked techs that come out with the original company that installed my unit in 2019 why the cluster of rooms on the west side of my house don’t cool well. Most recent went in the attic to inspect and told me that it was the insulation over the duct work, that it is squishing the ducts and constricting the air flow. My son just went up to inspect and said no “squished “ ductwork up there. The tubes that run to the east side (those rooms are further from the unit) of the house are larger tha”
“I discovered my outside unit (20 yr old Carrier R-22) had been humming loudly for several hours yesterday evening. The fan tried to move very slowly, but even a push with a stick wouldn't kick start it. This morning I opened it up, tested the 50 + 5 MFD capacitor (which had the fan side abandoned) and separate 7.5 MFD cap for the fan. Both were about 80% of their ratings. I purchased a 60 + 7.5 MFD cap and put it in to replace the two capacitor setup with the new dual run cap. The system beg”
“Trane heat pump went out yesterday. Contactor going in was 65v, so went to the disconnect box. 240v going in, but 65v going out. Confirms I just need a new fuse, or is there any cause for concern as to why the fuse is bad? submitted by /u/ps2cho [link] [comments]”
“I was able to finally capture this on video. Background below… Here is the deal. We have lived in this house for five summers now and the AC is the same unit we have had since we moved in and it does the same thing every summer. Randomly during the cooling cycle the blower will stop and air will stop coming out of the vent, but I can still hear the unit running outside. Sometimes it does this for a minute sometimes it’s a couple minutes sometimes it’s a few seconds and sometimes it’s almost even”
“I have a 3 year old Lennox hvac system with a variable speed motor (Genteq part 5SME39NXL3053). The air handler is intermittently throwing an E292 fault and the system won't start. E292 means the motor is obstructed or bearings seized. But then: sometimes it will restart after I power cycle it. It may then run normally for hours or days. Or, it may not restart after a power cycle, but then hours later it will start itself and again, run normally for hours. Does this sound like the motor or s”
“Woke up to a warm house this morning. Went outside to find the unit not running but making a buzz or humming noise. Popped the capacitor out, tested it, and it’s bad. My question is, let’s say my unit takes a 30+5 and my local place only has a 25+5 or a 35+5, can I make one of these work for a day or two while I order the correct one up? submitted by /u/blinkangels182 [link] [comments]”
“I have an ecobee. The temperature was set fine and I checked my furnace and the wiring is fine too. I even took out the outdoor kill switch. And reset it. All I heard was a humming every now and then. I read about using a stick so I basically used a stick through the grid and got it moving just a bit and once it did, it started spinning full speed. And even then it seems like it’s not cooling super well. submitted by /u/Potential_Shelter449 [link] [comments]”
“I am hoping to get some advice from HVAC professionals because I am trying to understand whether this is simply bad luck, a defective component, poor workmanship, or some combination of all three. I had a brand-new heat pump installed in December 2023 through my Mass Save energy-efficiency rebate program. The air handler is located in my attic , and the condenser unit is outside . Since the installation, I have experienced one problem after another. Timeline 12/14/2023 – New heat pump system ins”
“Furnace is 10 years old. Has a clunking sound and the blower motor was on its way out. HVAC guy replaced it + capacitor. Less often I'd still hear a sound. Guy found it was changing speed towards the end of a cycle. He tested the HEAT and FAN wires and they were simultaneously pushing 135v and 170v. While Cold was getting the normal 120v. All at the same time. Replaced it again. Same issue. The board tested fine when the blower is disconnected. So it seems like 2/2 blowers with the same issu”
“Carrier 48SX package unit. Sorry for format, I'm on mobile. Original symptom: Indoor fan ran on Fan or Cool, but compressor never started. Manually pushing the contactor in made the compressor and outdoor fan run normally. What I found: Original contactor coil measured OL (open) while still installed. After removal it measured about 8 ohms (still out of spec for a 24 V coil). Replaced it with a new 2-pole 24 V contactor. Current behavior: Fan-only mode works fine, indoor blower runs steady.”
“My outdoor Trane AC unit (4TTR3036H1000NA) made a sudden loud pop, then immediately started running extremely loud. At the same moment, three UPS units (battery backup for electronics) inside briefly switched to battery, so there may have been a voltage dip. The outdoor fan kept spinning, and I didn’t see or smell any smoke, sparks, or burning. No cooling issue prior to this pop. I shut it off at the thermostat and breakers and haven’t restarted it. The unit is about 3 years old, still under par”
“Have a Lennox system that has been working fine the last few years but recently started tripping the GFCI outlet. I've somewhat pinpointed it to the fan speed settings the last two weeks. Lowest fan speed red jumper second lowest fan speed Yellow jumper With cool mode or fan mode on Red jumper it'll run fine for the whole day. But when either cool or fan is switched to yellow it'll trip within the hour or so. I originally thought that FilterEasy Merv 10 filter was a restriction so I”
“Randomly stops pushing cooling. When i last did a quick check (this is for a family member) LP was down to 60. I tried getting to the evap and it was blocked by flue. They said they didnt want me to touch it since its a rental they want the landlord to deal with that hazard but my take is evap is icing up and then when they turn it off after not working they it melts by the time im here to look at it and run it again. But without real access to the evap cant figure much else out. This is a 4 ton”
“I know it sounds weird but hear me out…..So my capacitor went bad about 3 weeks ago and my heat pump stopped working. Other than that, I had no issues previously. The A/C guy (apprentice) came out and changed the capacitor. From the day he changed it, my A/C would no longer cool below 74 and the unit shuts off about every 24-36 hours. If I turn everything to OFF for about an hour, it will come back on and run about another 24-36 hours. It does not appear to be “icing” up and the freon is fine be”
“This is on a 2009 Trane communicating system and I am unfamiliar with it. This customer is the only one we have with a system like this so I don’t have much experience with it. I had an ERR 126 code on the thermostat and found a blown 5 amp fuse outside. I put in my 5 amp popper and flipped the power back on. After about 5 min, the compressor and fan came on for less than a second and went back off. It did this 2-3 times and I thought maybe the contactor coil was shorted. I swapped the contracto”

“Need some help. We have had 2 HVAC specialists stop by our house over the past week. First said our Fan Motor was broken (It wasn't) and our capacitor was low (It read 33 when it was 35+-5) and it was causing our fan motor to stop after 3-5 minutes of run time. I replaced both. “Any help is appreciated. Thank you So our AC stopping putting out cold air, house wouldn't get lower than 84 degrees. The unit would kick on for a bit then kick off, on and off, on and off.. We call out a company to come look at it. The guy looks at the outdoor unit determines the contactor is bad. He says it has voltage coming in so the thermostat was asking for air but it wasn't responding. He manually pushed the contactor in and the unit would kick on but the fan wouldn't spin. No”
“Hi all, I'm having a rather annoying issue since it's July in Arizona. Sometimes when one of my stats calls for cool, the condenser fan turns on but the compressor does not. What results is lukewarm, moist air being blown into the house. I’ve wired the controller to the unit as directed but when I power the ERV I get no power(blank screen) to the controller but also the controller buzzes. Obviously something’s up but I can’t figure it out. ERV works fine if controller is disconnected and I just use the switch. You can’t see it on the picture but corresponding wire colors match for B,A, arrow, and D+ on the controller and ERV. ”
“Working on a 2 stage rooftop outside air Aaon unit. One condenser fan motor was dead so we replaced it. When we replaced it, the new fan motor is running slow and at double the current draw as the first one. Both condenser fan motors turn on at the same time. 3 wires to the motor, so Motor Black wire goes to T1 on contactor , white motor wire goes to capacitor and then piggybacked to T2 on contactor and brown motor wire goes to the other side of the capacitor. 15mf capacitor, tested 14.9mf and 1”
“Hello everyone. So for over a month now I’ve had issues on and off with my AC unit. We’ve had the capacitor replaced twice as well as the blower motor and thermostat. With each replacement, it worked fine for a few days to a week or 2 before it would go out again. After all these repairs on top of countless other issues we’ve had to take care of recently, we just can’t catch up enough to get it looked at again. “My air handler is in my attic in FL. I had a cleaning and UV light installed recently. Twice in the past 10 days the float switch has killed the system. Drain line is fine so I presume the box is sweating and it’s filling the secondary drain pan. I looked at the box and noticed that one of the panels has a sheet metal screw missing. Is that enough air leakage to go from ok to sweaty? submitted by /u/rxmarxdaspot [link] [comments]”
“Issue: AC compressor doesn't come on when switching from generator power to utility power. Fixed by pulling breaker and waiting 10 minutes. AC: Comfortmaker C5A6S36AKAWA Generator: Guardian 0052420 New AC works great and has no issue when the power switches to the generator, but when utility power comes back on it stops working. No compressor sound on startup, fan spins but the air isn't hot. Old AC worked fine on the gen->utility switch. I have read that it might be a high-pressure,”

“Hey y'all, my HVAC unit on my house will randomly stop working. The fans inside the house still run, but the actual cooling will fail. So far, I've found success flipping the breaker off and on again, and after some minutes, the unit will kick back on and continue working. Any ideas what it might be? “So last year I had a 3 ton Payne packaged Heat pump installed on our roof. House is around 1600sqf. Recently I noticed my Compressor would kick on for about 30seconds then shut off for about a few mins and run normal. Its very intermittent but only happens around night to early morning. During peak heat itll run normal cycles. Ive been trying to learn if this is in fact a short cycle type of scenario, When the compressor kicks on then off after 1 minute or so the air handler blower still runs, a”
“Recently, I noticed our roof mounted Goodman hvac fan will often (but not always) short cycle on for 1-5 seconds, then shut off for 5-30ish seconds, then cycle like that repeatedly... then at some point it will seemingly run for several minutes. Other times it seems to work normally, usually when it's cooler outside, of course... When the fan is cutting out, I can hear that the compressor is still running up there and not shutting off with the fan. We thought it might be our Nest thermostat”

It broke monday of last week, and we've been on a wait list. I'm going to push for the entire condenser unit to be replaced since it looks like it took a hit at full speed when that rivet snapped.
