“Yes, I run it in a VM The annoyance of Nextcloud is that its still written in PHP so its super slow, especially when syncing lots of small files etc Also they try to add way too many features (office etc) instead of just a lean and fast file-sync. Opencloud is just that, a super lean and fast and secure file sync. Think it uses like 100MB or RAM”

“You got the gist. But, if you go for the "pluss" version of Sync, you have 10Gb and multiple Vaults. I barely use 1/10th of the space, but I sync three different Vaults without a problem. “Initially tried TrueNAS, and went to Proxmox. I use it for all my virtualization, but my backup server is also proxmox. It has a very effective backup system and can do all the ZFS snapshots you need. Now that it's set up, I don't ever look back.”

“Maybe try seafile. Pretty easy to set up with docker and I guess you can easily test if the sync clients can handle it or not. However be aware that the seafile backend stores its data in some kind of block storage and not directly mirrored to disk. I don't think this is an issue, but some selfhosters don't like it. Also be aware that it keeps a history and trash, so if files in your setup change super often maybe disable it.”
