Concerns are raised about job security in finance and tech, with some attributing the cuts to AI advancements and a shift towards Europe. “Visas have existed since 1990 and companies were hiring from 30 day bootcamps until 2022 paying 2x the salaries they were earning previously, especially during covid [re: I feel like you have to be “amazing” to make a living in CS. You can’t just be average. It’s too freaking competitive. Even if you’re a genius. There are thousands of other geniuses.]”

“I agree about this being covid overhire driven combined with AI forecasts. I don’t care for India, and don’t want them to keep our jobs. I am just saying that’s how it been playing out and I don’t see any stop to it. Regarding the hurdle of human decisions unfortunately I just don’t see it being a hurdle for long. You can program a loop for AI to keep making decisions and that’s that. I get that we have matters of “taste” now, but once AI knows our taste preferences it’s free to implement.”

India alone graduates 1.5 million CS grads a year compared to 100k Americans. These grads speak English unlike most Chinese grads, and their English is getting exponentially better every generation. AI is now helping them write code and documentation just as good as anyone else. The competition is already over. I’m a senior manager in FAANG with 9”

“Hi everyone, I was impacted by Visa’s mass layoffs in July. One of the reasons communicated to me was that my compensation was significantly higher than what Visa typically paid, or was planning to pay, for engineers at my experience level, and I was therefore impacted as part of the restructuring. I’m now looking for my next opportunity. Experience: 4+ years Previous experience: Visa + mid-sized product-based startup Current location: Bangalore Looking for: SDE-2 or equivalent Backend roles Pre”

“If a US work visa person gets laid off, what would be the best course of action? If you have been through this, what did you do? Some suggested going to Canada, some suggest returning to India, Some say people do get offers in those 60 days. submitted by /u/Even_Comfortable_513 [link] [comments]”

“Yep, common story now. Visa just laid off 4000 software engineers. How many of those software engineers, were lured away from general IT when software devs were all the rage a couple years ago? They are all getting mass dumped into a saturated unemployed tech worker pool, and they figure, ok, I'll qualify for general IT if apply, I should get something. All these desperate workers are creating downward wage pressure and wage suppression across the whole sector. If you put mid to upper (of th”

“7 days a week is new normal in my area. It's like you only have time to sleep less and eat while work. It's crazy here. 😔 I just hold on because the job market is bloody. Once you left/laid off. You will need at least 1-2 years to back to workforce even you are top 1% percentile of Independent Contributor. They won't add more people even you want to.”

r/cscareerquestionsAug 9

“Yeah, it’s a U.S. visa, but absolutely not limited to tech. Companies have been abusing this for decades. Now many are shifting to offshore entire teams now instead as it’s even cheaper than H1B and now super easy with advances in remote work capabilities.”

“lol, almost every place has had layoffs. If you eliminate places based on that criteria, you couldn't work anywhere. You might find better answers about the stability of the company/state of things after the layoffs/potential future on Blind.”

“It’s a shame that they don’t consider Americans first for these jobs. Corporations know they can underpay those on H-1 visas. In my opinion, they should only be issued per category, where there is a huge shortage of skills and local supply can’t meet demand.”

“AI can't replace homeless people. 🫠”

“This was true before the pandemic but nowadays, tech is every bit as prestige-driven as finance and law. Self taught people are effectively frozen out of the industry. We're getting to a point where the only CS grads who work as software engineers after graduation come from top schools or have top companies on their resume, and they're no more capable than others.”
