AI developers are facing challenges acquiring and utilizing adequate hardware for local LLM development and training. High costs, limited availability, and concerns about future-proofing are driving a search for optimal solutions, often involving expensive Apple products or alternative hardware options. The shrinking availability of high-memory configurations from Apple is exacerbating the problem.

“You're completely missing the point. Apple is already releasing a 512GB unified-memory Mac Studio later this month. Larger memory systems and multi-machine configurations will continue expanding what individuals can run. Hardware limitations are temporary. The availability of the weights is what matters. “Yes, unless you’ll be running local LLMs (which, why for most people since you’ll heavily constrain yourself even with a really strong machine). 16 GB unified memory is plenty for the vast majority of use cases, including yours. “This is a maturity question wearing a spec sheet. The MI350P has the raw capacity, but the software tax is real: driver updates, quantization paths, and the quiet version mismatch that eats your afternoon. The RTX Pro 6000 is what your entire workflow already assumes. You are not buying performance, you are buying the absence of a debugging category. “I posted a question the other day in here about good development models, which prompted good discussion. However, it mostly just reinforced my own experience, which is that on a 128GB machine, you can run good open/local weight models for development (especially if you use a frontier model to plan and direct them). But what I didn't see in there, and I'm trying to get to, is this; are there are any open weight models that will run on a 48GB, 64GB, or 96GB? If so, which ones are you runni”

“I’m planning to get a Mac mini mainly to run local LLMs and AI agents 24/7. I plan to run models up to 27B parameters with Q4 quantization, and maybe not for coding, maybe just for everday task and model exploration. I’m trying to figure out whether I should prioritize more RAM or a more powerful chip. For example, I’m considering: M4 with 32GB RAM M4 Pro with 24GB RAM For this kind of workload, which matters more: having more memory to run larger models, or better CPU/GPU performance for faster”

“If you're updating, get a mac with as much memory as you can afford—preferably a mac studio, but a Mac Mini with an M5 Pro and 64 GBs of memory would be okay. “Well, I never went with DDR5. It never made sense for LLM inference, IMO. A 10 year old skylake Xeon with 2666 memory has the equivalent of a dual channel DDR5-8000. TBH, I don't think AVX-512 and/or VNNI make a difference for decode. Said Xeon with 24-26 cores has more than enough compute to saturate the memory controller even with AVX2, which like I said in my original comment, can execute 2 instructions per clock cycle. “I remember thinking about what I'd need to do to run the model without it's ngram table so that I wouldn't have to buy hundreds of dollars worth of SSDs. I have been researching for past few days and have zeroed in on dual sparks because higher throughput for agentic coding / multiple parallel requests and prompt processing advantage over M5 ultra. “I think the bigger issue before even that is the price. Even with how the ram/ssd pricing is right now it just isn't that competitively priced while missing out on the ConnectX7 connector. If this was considerably cheaper I could see a much larger niche for it. Will have to dive in more, but it looks even worse compared to the surface laptop ultra which honestly was expecting to end up being even more expensive. “If i were going to go for value, I'd go on eBay or Facebook marketplace and find a tiny/mini/micro pc for the same price or cheaper with a 11th gen or better i3 or i5 with 8 or 16GB of ram and at least a 512gb ssd (you can get away with 256 but you'll start to feel the pinch when you have 2 or 3 people using your immich instance). Expanding the storage and moving your immich storage directory is super easy if you deploy immich using docker or docker compose, so storage is not/should not”
