Vehicle owners are experiencing unusual clicking or clacking sounds from their car engines, particularly during cold starts. They're seeking to identify the cause and potential solutions, with some suspecting issues related to exhaust systems or catalytic converters.

“Ticking and tapping noise on very back passenger top of intake manifold. It seems to get loud and quiet, loud and quiet over and over again. Engine only has 50k miles. 2011 Chrysler 300c 5.7 50k miles submitted by /u/christhotpatrol [link] [comments]”

“Hello people, My Volvo V40 (model 2003, 1.9 D engine) is making a really loud, high pitched noise (you can listen to it in the video) when the ignition is turned on. It drives absolutely fine (and has done so for more than a thousand km) but I would really like to know if somebody knows what could be making this noise and how I would go about fixing it. It's hard to identify the part its coming from, but seems to be coming from the right side of the engine bay. Thank you in advance!!!”

“I own a Ford Fusion crossover 2008 diesel and I've been hearing a faint clicking / ticking noise from engine bay since the past month and it started since a long drive (500km) after sitting un used for long. -I was seeing Oil light turn on and off and found out later I had a dented oil pan, though during the drive i thought the sensor was faulty and kept pushing the car pretty rough. Later i got it replaced and the light didnt show again tho the noise didn't stop :[ -From my research i f”

“2003 Sentra SER Spec V with QR25DE. During cold starts, it makes this sound for a second and then it goes away. Other times, I have noticed that it cranks for a second or two before starting, but it runs just fine otherwise. I've heard timing chain rattle in other cars and it doesn't sound like that. submitted by /u/Snipemaster23 [link] [comments]”

“Noise only occurs during cold start, will not be able to replicate sound until cold start the next day. Aisin Water pump, timing belt, cog gears, tensioner, and head gaskets replaced with MLS at 147,000km by Subaru. submitted by /u/MasterCheeef [link] [comments]”

“I have a 2009 Camry 2.4L (2AZ-FE) that makes a very fast, high-pitched ticking noise after a cold start. Normally, the ticking lasts around 15 seconds and gradually fades away. One thing I've noticed is that whenever the top end has had a chance to drain more than usual, such as after an oil change, the ticking lasts longer, sometimes close to a minute. Recently, when I switched to 5W-20 from 5w-30, the noise basically disappeared. Here is a video from someone else that has the same type of”

“Hello, I've recently purchased a 2021 Lincoln corsair with a 2L 4 cyl Ford EcoBoost. After approx 45 after starting a loud clacking sound can be heard. After further diagnosing unplugging the EVAP purge valve stops this sound. Doing a little research, the car warms up the catalytic converter and then begins to use the EVAP purge valve after normal temps are achieved explaining the delay. This seems abnormally loud and can be heard through the grill with the hood shut. Would love to hear your”
