“Dark grey cloth will work fine. Honestly, I’d spend the money on lighting before buying a fancy backdrop.. put the light in front/45° to your face and move yourself a bit away from the wall, that alone should fix a lot of the “dark face, blown-out wall” issue For editing…”

“I’m planning to upgrade my lighting system and other content creation materials. Anybody have any suggestions for what was most useful to them? I don’t mind investing a decent amount of money into this, I would rather spend the money than to keep replacing things…”

Honestly, I’d spend the money on lighting before buying a fancy backdrop.. put the light in front/45° to your face and move yourself a bit away from the wall, that alone should fix a lot of the “dark face, blown-out wall” issue For editing, DaVinci Resolve is free and more than enough, although there’s a bit of a learning curve.. for something simpler, ccpvut is pretty hard to beat for reels For the episodes, I’d avoid writing a full script unless that’s your style”
“A darker background may help with some of the lighting issues. Might make it easier for the camera to focus on you without having to make you appear darker than the rest of the room. You can also experiment with placement of the ring light. Or, if the room has decent lighting already, you could try it without the ring light completely. (Disclosure: I work with the Blubrry support team.)”
“Can you sit further away from the wall so it’s catching less of the light and/or adjust the intensity of the ring light? If you’re comfortable with making manual adjustments to your video recording, filming in Black Magic Cam app gives you some control over the exposure, etc, of your shot. But the lighting has to be right first or it’s not gonna help much. As for editing - Davinci Resolve is free. It’s not the the easiest to learn, but they do have a whole workbook online to teach you how to use”
“Ring light is equivalent to relying on a 20 year old Range Rover. Best bet is to get real lights or create a backdrop in the corner of the room. Use depth to your advantage.”
“imo ditch your ring light and use some real light (e.g. 1-2 softboxes or led video lights). for editing software, da vinci resolve is good and free. capcut also. if you got a mac, i like the apple creator subscription which gives you logic pro and final cut pro and pixelmator (for thumbnails), which are all very good. but for a single person imovie and garageband (both free) would be sufficient”
“I do video game reviews, where part of the video is me talking to the camera. There's no overhead light in the room I use unfortunately, and using only a single ringlight causes harsh, unappealing shadows. I could buy a 2nd ring light, but would that be for the best, or is there another type of light that might be better? Thank you in advance to everybody! submitted by /u/Wild_Tradition_6185 [link] [comments]”
“I shoot videos in my home office, so I have two bookshelves and threw in a couple of Govee lights. My bookshelves show my personality and interests -- collectibles, my TTRPG collection, a lot of books, and other knick knacks. I didn't put a ton of thought into it. The only thing I really fussed over was the lights. I didn't want a sterile environment, even though the majority of the videos are made for the company I work for (Blubrry Podcasting). I'm a podcaster with interests! :D Ke”
“I'm looking to get started with content creation. I'm a tattoo artist so 99% of my shots will be in a dimly lit/orange overhead light - lots of ringlight glare studio. And my Samsung s25 ultra is just not it. I'm wondering what kit set up you'd recommend someone just starting out. submitted by /u/QuickSpace3289 [link] [comments]”
““For a 2-person video, I’d put a large soft light slightly in front and between them, angled about 45° toward both faces. Add a weaker fill light on the opposite side to soften shadows, and if possible, place a small light behind them for separation. The key is keeping the main light high enough and far enough back that both people get even lighting.””
“I'm looking for a good lighting setup that wont break the bank. Its going to be two people on a couch filmed with a mirrorless camera. The locations will change so i cant rely on regular interior lights. I purchased a softbox 2 light kit off of Amazon but it feels cheap and I dont want something that will break after 6 months. Basically I need suggestions for what specific type of light(s) I should be looking for that are easy to transport. It seems that all i find are cheap Amazon solutions”
“I don’t want to break the bank. Is there any hacks to get something looking beautiful but not too pricey? Something on UK Amazon? I’ll be filming on my phone (IPhone air) I have an atmospheric lamp or 2 and a painting on the back wall I will move to fit in the frame better. I’m skipping ahead and stressing about how to make a background suitable for YouTube and TikTok (different frames) but I’m sure it will be fine. I have a really old ring light too but I think it’s a cold white which might not”

“Hi all, I need help with lighting and a stand for overhead setup filming or front-facing. I’ve tried many stands and setups but can’t figure it out. I need this for art videos, UGC, and content creation to improve my workflow. I recently bought a new clamp stand on desk attached with ring light, but there’s still a shadow, and the stand isn’t strong enough to hold my phone. It’s also very stiff to move. Is this because my desk is small, there’s a wall and overhead shelf above, or because I’m fil”
“Mixing music under voiceover and trying to figure out where "present but out of the way" turns into "you can hear the music breathing." Sidechain ducking on the music so it dips when the narrator talks and comes back up in the gaps sounds right in theory but at a certain point the pumping is more distracting than just having the music quieter the whole time. Questions for anyone who mixes this a lot: - Ratio/release settings you actually use for voice-over-music ducking, not”
“Starting up a Youtube channel and only have a phone (Samsung Galaxy S26 shooting at 30FPS UHD or 8K), a Rode Podmic microphone with a desk mount. Would a Godox SL60 with a 21.7 Newer softlight/stand attachment be a bit much? The room measures about 10-12ft x 11-13ft. I only got the best light because all the videos I have seen tell me that good lighting can make or break the look of a video. submitted by /u/BubblyTumbleweed8455 [link] [comments]”
“This question is specific to Old School RuneScape content, but I suppose it could generally apply to gaming as a whole. How do you guys get most of your traffic? Most of my views come from Browse but YouTube constantly tries to push my videos in Suggested and it absolutely slaughters my CTR at launch. I’ve posted 21 videos this year and I’d say roughly 70-80% of them get totally boned on Suggested but end up performing ok over time. Just curious to if you guys see the same or if it’s just me lol”
