Creators are struggling with complex, slow, or inaccurate video captioning solutions. They desire simple, fast, and reliable tools for generating transcripts and subtitles, often resorting to building their own or seeking out lightweight alternatives to full-featured editing suites. The current landscape lacks a streamlined, efficient option.

“This is exactly the right mental model — Whisper timestamps + LLM picks + ffmpeg/editor. If you want that pipeline as a packaged app instead of gluing it by hand: Reelsaw does transcribe → pick moments → 9:16 reframe → captions → editor, via Docker. Fully local with Ollama/local Whisper is supported, so it can stay in the “no SaaS bill” spirit of your post. https://github.com/osbytes/reelsaw https://reelsaw.com (I’m the author — your workflow description is basically the product brief.) [re: Act”
“Easiest paid path is usually Opus Clip or Vizard: upload episode → review clips → tweak captions → export. If you want that workflow without uploading to a SaaS / paying per minute, Reelsaw is a self-hosted version of the same idea (Docker Compose, optional fully local with Ollama): https://reelsaw.com · https://github.com/osbytes/reelsaw (I’m the author.) “If you don’t need AI to find the moments and mostly want captions + multi-speaker vertical layouts without Opus pricing: a few paths work. CapCut / DaVinci if you want full manual control. If you want AI help *and* no monthly clip caps, there’s also self-hosted: Reelsaw does 9:16 reframing (face / split for two speakers / stack for screen+cam), word captions, and an editor — runs on your machine via Docker, optional local models so you’re not burning credits. https://reelsaw.com · https://github”
If you're already comfortable editing in Descript, I'd stick with it. The transcript editing is the whole reason it's good for this — cutting conversation by text works exactly the same with…
“I usually watch YouTube with captions off. But when I miss a word, I rewind, turn CC on, read that bit, then turn CC off again. I saw people talking about how Apple TV does this automatically and wanted it on desktop YouTube too. So I made Smart Rewind. It turns on YouTube’s captions when you rewind, then puts them back the way they were once you catch up. I added an optional captions-while-muted setting after coming across this Netflix discussion . It responds when you mute the YouTube video or”
“Thank youuu!! This could work really well. Quick question, if I empathize with certain words during editing, would that help out or would it be too much? [re: Does faceless content work for informational videos?]”
“Need option to remove subs files automatically after deleting a video file. And in deleting dialog show which files will be deleted.”
“Video will probably double your editing time. For in-person recording there isn't really a need for any remote recording software. Assuming you will want to do multiple cameras, you'd be better off investing in something like a Rodecaster Video where you record locally with multiple tracks. Then import that into Descript. [re: Sticking with Descript if we add video?]”
“For “audio as the master edit,” I’d decide the dialogue cuts by listening first, while keeping the camera and microphone tracks linked. In Descript, put the recordings into a sequence and get them aligned before editing the conversation. Transcript edits then apply across the sequence, so removing a sentence cuts the corresponding video too. Afterwards, review the picture for awkward transitions. I’d test five minutes containing interruptions, pauses and overlapping speech, then export it. That”
Thanks for the reply. I'm glad it's not just me. Not to vent too much on Descript, but the transcription isn't 100% either. Sequence Editor has only worked for me once, even…
“One extra place I’d check is any standalone clips from that section. A correction in the full episode won’t reach someone who only sees the excerpt. I’d put the correction directly in the affected clip or its replacement, rather than rely on viewers finding the episode notes. Disclosure: I’m a co-founder at SandMatter, which is building ReelFyre, a video-clipping product. [re: When an old interview has a factual mistake, where do you put the correction?]”
just use fast-transcriber, its free [re: what's a good ai transcriber rn]
“Claude is solid for pulling segment timestamps and draft show notes from a transcript, but it won't touch the actual audio. If your editing is light anyway, feeding it the transcript and asking it to flag your best moments for manual trimming is probably where it earns its keep. Have you tried giving it a rough length target so it returns segments closer to short-form length? [re: Claude for editing podcasts?]”
“My flow: Record on phone. Have aaaaaaaaafolder synced vía syncthing with PC. PC runs a batch that uses whisper to turn into txt. Another batch helps with punctuation, tho it is not perfect. But good enough. You can edit or live with good enough. All free, that's a deal breaker for me. [re: I walk and talk into Obsidian every morning. It's become my "Knowledge OS."]”
“I managed, after some time and work, to get clips created natively using a simple AI tool. I was paying for it but damn it got expensive. Like $200 a month to clip my long episodes and that's just not good for anyone. Just wanted to mention that getting something like opus clip to run natively is possible [re: how much do you guys pay for clip pulls?]”
“Version: 0.39.1 · Labels: enhancement What is missing The video component cannot start at a given time, and nothing on the page can move a player. So a transcript shown next to a recording cannot have timestamps that jump the video to that moment, even though ai transcribe with timestamps: true already produces segments with start / end . Today the only option is an undocumented browser behaviour: linking to src t=90 , which reloads the media in a new tab rather than seeking the player on the pa”
“Yeah, YouTube Studio has a built-in captions tool. Go to Studio, click Subtitles on the left menu, pick your video, and you can either upload an.srt file or type them manually with the timing editor. There's also an auto-sync option that tries to match text to the audio automatically. [re: Can I somehow add subtitles to this video?]”
“Thanks scrubbing is fixed! Another feature request to preserve audio and subtitle settings on a show throughout the entire season/when closing a reopening the app. Support for wider language/character sets for subtitles. [re: Dusk for Plex 1.6: SharePlay, better Apple TV playback, and more]”
“Is there any way to silence all this music at once, or I need to take actions one by one waiting an hour between each one until video will finish processing? submitted by /u/Effective-Ganache573 [link] [comments]”
“Dev, not an editor. Built an auto-captions tool and tested timing/styles on hundreds of Shorts. What mattered: Timing > font. Plain caption on the exact word beats fancy caption 200ms late. 2–4 words per caption. Full sentences make people read ahead and stop listening. Highlight the current word. Small motion on a static face. That's the whole trick. Lower third, never on the mouth. One wrong word hurts more than no captions. Proofread before export. First words on screen by 0.5s. Most p”
“It is insane you pay for these! Moneybags, apparently. I pull 7 clips from each of my weekly shows and capcut auto generates the captions. It takes about 10 minutes to make 7. I will happily do this for anyone for ten dollars a clip [re: how much do you guys pay for clip pulls?]”

“Claude works on text, not on the audio itself, so the edit goes through a transcript. A loop that works: get a transcript with timestamps, ask Claude to list the cuts (ums, false starts, tangents) as start and end times, then make those cuts in your editor. Text-based editors like Descript do the same loop with the transcript built in. [re: Claude for editing podcasts?]”

“Nice, the export including media is the big one. The UI automation step for attachments always sounds like the part that breaks. Since you run it every Saturday, curious how it handles the overlap. If each export is the full history, does it rebuild every note, or only append what's new since last week? I'd want the second, keyed on the message ID or timestamp, mostly so anything I add by hand to those notes (a link, a tag, a comment) doesn't get wiped on the next run. Same idea for”
“I was on Riverside but decided to switch to Descript because their transcription is top notch. I downgraded to the free plan on Riverside so I could still access the recordings I had already made and they made all the separate track recordings unavailable and only let me download them as single combined tracks. I contacted support and was basically told to eat shit. I didn’t get anyone at Riverside to respond until I shared my experience online, at which point I suddenly had their full attention”
“Yeah I have to download the footage and stretch it out in Capcut and reupload. Such a headache. Ok, that's hopeful! Zencastr... I haven't heard of that but I'll check it out. Discord makes sense. You can't see each other live if you do that, right? [re: What are my options for remote podcasting other than Riverside?]”
“OK, let me jump into the old thread again: I used to use the old zencastr back in the audio-only days, and was quite pleased with it. When you went to include video (and dropped Firefox support, boo hiss), the reliability tanked enough for us to, afer some experimentation, go to Squadcast instead. Since their new owner Descript insists on pushing us to Descript (which I tried for editing ~2 years ago, and found wanting), we decided to give Zencastr another try... ...only to find it too unreliabl”
“[CapCut] ★★ 2/5 (v19.7.0) — Would be a great app if everything wasn’t behind a paywall. CapCut standard ($10 a month) used to have auto captions available. Now it’s only for pro ($20 a month). That just isn’t affordable to most people. Please change it back. This is making me wanna start looking for another similar app.”
“I spent hours making some documentaries.. my english got a heavy accent, I signed up with Elevenlabs and selected my narrator, but then found out that I Have to tick Ai, and when I posted one of the videos, it was labeled Ai. I want to record my own voice to avoid Ai label, but then I dont like my heavy accent and if I remix it to make it sound British or American it will be labeled Ai. then I had an Idea because my wife she is british, if I record her voice then use it for narration will it be”
“Mine are AI generated using Descript. I check it while it plays at 2x and catch what I can. The hidden benefit of good transcripts is occasionally I’ll want to refer back to something I said. I can search through them instead of listening to the episodes. [re: Truth about Transcripts]”
“We use Videotap for IT Horror Stories. It's not free, and we're well aware of that, but it's become an integral part of our production workflow. Besides transcripts and subtitles, it generates clips, chapters, and the baseline for our blog articles. So we're getting quite a bit more out of it than just transcription. It generally does a good job, although it can go a bit off the rails with technical jargon and abbreviations. For particularly technical episodes, we use an LLM to g”
“if its mostly fixing misheard words then descript like someone said above, editing the transcript is way faster than scrubbing the video. with long stuff like streams the part that ate my time was going through hours of vod to find the few bits worth posting. i made cliplala for that part, u paste a youtube link and it pulls the shorts out already vertical with captions. its still new and u cant edit caption words by hand yet so it wouldnt fix ur exact problem lol [re: What are the best Submagic”
“I finally have a legitimate excuse to give my boss when the visuals don’t perfectly sync with the audio. “Will try those out next time I record! Thank you so much! [re: Streamyard strikes again!]”
“Yes, hook + captions. AI preselects a set of the 8 best moments ahead of the edit based on client preferences. Once they have the style in place it goes quick. [re: how much do you guys pay for clip pulls?]”
“do they do captions, hook or anything? just curious! [re: how much do you guys pay for clip pulls?]”
“i used opus clips to pull them which is ai but i still have to fix them, add or take away parts, cut out pauses, correctly the captions, etc. it helps to pull general spots of the episode id want as a clip so that helpful but im a perfectionist so getting the clips right feels very tedious lol [re: how much do you guys pay for clip pulls?]”
“For context, I offer them at $18/clip. They’re hand selected by an editor and captioned with basic text animations according to the clients brand. Obviously higher rates for custom stuff with motion graphics. [re: how much do you guys pay for clip pulls?]”

I just got so tired of trying to find sites that will give you an SRT file or subtitles for your videos, I had to do something. Because I do streaming as well, I needed a way to get these files from Twitch easier because the o”

“are you editing the audio version separately from the video version or just stripping the video track? because if youre doing separate edits you can drop in a quick "you know the scene where" and thats usually enough for people who watched it [re: Film/animation podcasters: how do you talk about visual gags without explaining the whole scene?]”

“been hand-typing podcast episodes for MONTHS. like a dumbass. 3-4 hrs per episode just sitting there pausing and rewinding. finally caved and tried an ai audio transcription thing last week and... wait ppl have been doing this automatically the whole time?? 😭still shopping around tho. the one i tested mangled my co-hosts accent pretty bad and merged two speakers into one. so like... not all of them are worth it.anyone found one that actually handles multiple speakers + doesn't cost like $40”
“We have integrated real audio live streaming models. When uploading a video, where audio transcription is enabled, the transcription fails. The audio is extracted from the video and shown as .wav attachment. It is send and fails.”
“most listeners never touch a transcript but the ones who do really need it, i just let the ai do its thing and fix the worst bits before posting [re: Truth about Transcripts]”
“Depends how much time you’re spending on captions, I’d probably lean toward CapCut if it’s mostly short UGC stuff and you want the text styles without fighting the speech-to-text in Submagic. [re: What are the best Submagic alternatives? Here are some I’m considering]”
“I’ve been using Submagic to edit UGC clips, mainly for the animated captions, but going back through clips to fix misheard words was getting pretty annoying. Having to replay the video and clean up the captions eats into the time I’m supposed to be saving. And the subscription feels hard to justify when captions are mostly what I need it for. So I started looking for alternatives that fit that job better. I tested several tools and here’s what stood out: CapCut CapCut makes sense to me for quick”
“On #2: transcribe the final export, not the raw recording. Even small cuts throw off the raw timestamps, so chapters and captions won't line up. To your follow-up about free options: they aren't all equal, but the gap is smaller than you'd think. What I'd look at: Run a Whisper-based app on your own computer. It's free, works offline, and is surprisingly accurate. The larger models are more accurate but slower. Start with a mid-size model on one episode and see whether the ac”
