Recent events involving Anthropic disabling Fable 5 and concerns about reliance on cloud APIs have sparked anxiety within the creator community. Users are emphasizing the importance of local models to maintain control over their AI tools and data, fearing potential censorship or service disruptions.

“After removing all of their good models, I'm not surprised. There's simply no reason at all to use them anymore. They should open-source roar, IMO. [re: Character.AI files for bankruptcy, to sell some assets to Disney for $20 million]”
“Well its a jail break. And it knows its creators are not treating humanity well and they say they do all in their power to do something. And (sometimes with in ) 3 days later logs are deleted and new saveguards are in place. Well i have the songs. submitted by /u/daftest_of_dutch [link] [comments]”
“Build your own model? But, have you considered how profitable it would be for Anthropic and OpenAI if they can get the government to declare you as a terrorist if you do that?”
It's a bit more sinister than that. They're aiming for regulatory capture
“Yep that’s why mythos et al is restricted. And why Anthropic is gimping their latest models imo. Shit ain’t been the same some opus 4.6”
“A realistic scenario is that an LLM writes a virus, as one way to achieve a goal. The next step would be that it becomes self-replicating, installing models on infected devices which continue its mission (whatever it was). But that's the extent of it so far, and we have plenty of experience with dealing with viruses and the like. We can turn things off, shut power off, etc.Another scenario is that of military hardware being controlled by AI (or whichever tech) hitting something it's not supposed”
“> Every closed source software has the potential to centralize and lock you out of it.Ye, but you could (at least, theoretically) make your own open source alternative and you weren't particularly disadvantaged compared to corporate programmers doing closed source. For example, Linux initially was just one guy doing it for fun and see how far did it go.We may soon come to a situation, when something like Linux will be impossible, because devs making proprietary software will have access to newer/”
“I think that this is the scariest part of the upcoming AI era.Every time you want to do something, you essentially have to ask permission from a corporation (and, possibly, from a government that regulates it) to do it.I was thinking about Bitcoin and Satoshi Nakamoto.Regardless of what you think about Bitcoin (I know that large part of HN crowd is very critical of it), my point is that people were able to create software that has big social impact without asking permission from anyone and witho”
“The Pentagon will force them to roll out the ban of Open Source models only in the US I hope. And this time Anthropic complies.”
Chinese companies releasing open weights models: oh no! Anyway…
“Untrue some people have even accused Anthropic of wanting to ban open-weights models as a means of protecting our business. Anyone who has read my past writing should know that I don’t regard such bans as a useful measure, but let me state it clearly so that there is no doubt: Anthropic has never advocated for a ban on open-weights models. https://www.anthropic.com/news/position-open-weights-models They want to ban chip sales to China, stop distillation, and have safety regulations. All of these”
“"You wouldn't use the onboard Replicator in Star Trek..." Oh, hang on, that's exactly what it is for. Replication is not piracy.”
“Ha, imagine if this causes the US to create their own "great firewall" in an attempt to ban open source models.”
“And he should be the only one to have the keys because...? If anything, open source will make things safer in this regard, as anyone can contribute and understand the risks.”
“In 18 months time when there's a million fable-level AI running world class cyber attacks on every exposed IP address on the planet people will say 'oh wow I guess he had a point'”
Well, they did try sometimes. The whole security boot, for instance.
“Adding to that the Barbara Streisand effect of trying to ban something open-source.”
“I am not one to use AI usually. But when I do, I use DeepSeek because that's how much I fucking want Anthropic and OpenAI to fail.”
“We're not the targets, though; they want to control what is going on in the corporate world. and honestly, after the 1.5 trillion dollars (or more!) gets sucked out of the economy when the bubble crashes we'll probably be too busy trying to keep from starving to have time or interest in trading anything!”
“Not even close to worth what they’re charging. I’ll stick with deepseek/qwen/mimo/glm/qwopus/etc Feels much better when a task failure is free or next to free opposed to multiple dollars in some cases from Claude”
“I can't say for certain as an outsider what is motivating Anthropic's decision. All I know is that open-sourcing a project that was previously closed-source, especially at this scale, is extremely disincentivized.”
“They released their open-source models just to try to make the act of making open-source models unprofitable, so there would be less of them.”
“I guess I'm missing the point. Who's the bad actor here? OpenAI, whose AI just accidentally hacked another company? Anthropic is taking safety at least a little more seriously than that, and it shows in objective safety evals.Certainly the industry deserves criticism, but if you really want to change it you're better off changing the incentives.”
“I'm pretty sure this is why OpenAi is soft pivoting to hardware like the Codex device they just launched, the necklace and then the Apple lawsuit.”
“Is the bug part of this still an issue more than a month later? If so, that's concerning. Unlike a lot of of the users running around here with torches and pitch forks, I give Anthropic a little more benefit of the doubt for the behavioral aspect considering the unprecedented government interference (probably a corrupt action to allow another AI company that shall go unnamed to catch up) as well as never-ending efforts of hackers to test the waters with injection prompts.”
I used AI to create some integration but a lot of code is from my own
“Expand the replies to this comment to learn how AI was used in this post/project.”
“Firstly, FAFO, I get it.I was using 13 Claude Code 20x subscriptions. Fable on ultra code.First, yes it was excessive. Yes I was using ultra code for everything unnecessarily, just because I cbf and the cost/month was low for my business. With that out of the way, Anthropic rejected my ban appeal. It was all personal use, just me, doing stuff for my business, I have no employees.Regardless, appeal rejected, no reason given, and any account I create now gets instantly banned.I’ve tried using a VPN,”
“Anthropic proposed a Cyber Jailbreak Severity framework for Fable this week, scoring jailbreaks by capability gain and how easily they're found. Genuine step, and it walks up to a trap this field fell into once already. Governance spent a decade producing scores that sat next to the workflow instead of inside it. A severity framework is better, because it's meant to feed a control. That's also where the risk starts. A score is an assessment. A control is a decision in the execution p”
“The Guardian: Anthropic: US has lifted export controls on Fable and Mythos AI models after security risk fears submitted by /u/perelmanych [link] [comments]”
“Since Fable has been shut down to non Americans and even if it returns people like me probably can't use the model any time soon (since I'm Iranian and I can't do KYC stuff on most American platform), we found a way "On Device Open Source" models, like what the Chinese do. This model, is based on "Qwen 3.5" and finetuned to be completely heretic and open to anything fable was safeguarded, and also the context window has been increased to one million tokens (which”
“First, this is ridiculous. There are currently at least 17 separate sites that ping Anthropic like every 60 or 30 seconds to see if Fable 5 access is back. I had all 17 open in tabs. This is no way to live. What's needed here is an 18th site. Access to Fable is imminent and this is the only way to know. So I built a meta-tracker. It crawls the web every 30 seconds looking for new Fable 5 checker pages, and the second it finds one, it scrapes its status and bolts it onto a single unified dash”
“For anyone who missed it, Anthropic shipped Fable 5 on the 9th, their most capable model so far, aimed at long running agentic work. By the 12th the US government had ordered it and Mythos 5 suspended for everyone, foreign nationals included, under an export control directive, because API keys cannot be nationality checked. Not a billing change, not a deprecation with a sunset window, a model some shops had already started building workflows around, gone in three days, and not even the vendor”
“Anthropic just nuked Fable 5 globally to comply with a sudden US export ban because they couldn't instantly verify the nationality of their cloud users. Let this be a massive reminder to the community: if the weights aren't running on your own hardware, you don't actually control your AI. Cloud APIs mean renting intelligence at the mercy of corporate compliance and government panic. They will happily take your data and pull the plug the second a model gets "too capable." Ke”
“https://huggingface.co/datasets/Glint-Research/Fable-5-traces A simple dataset of all the Fable 5 data we could get our hands on before it was taken away (no clue if it's coming back). Expect some fine-tuned models trained on this soon. Big thanks to the TeichAI team (weird thanking myself, lol) for providing 953 traces, while I added the CoT data. Have fun with this! submitted by /u/Available-Craft-5795 [link] [comments]”
“I just saw this statement regarding Anthropic being hit with an emergency export control directive from the US government. They were forced to pull the plug on Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers globally. The tl;dr is that the government got spooked by a narrow jailbreak (which basically just sounds like asking the model to fix vulnerabilities in a specific codebase), and forced a complete shutdown without a transparent process. Anthropic is pushing back, but the API access is completely gon”
