“Probably different people involved in the town making different decisions. I can't imagine any one person choosing to give the same garden an award and then threatening to tear it down, but governments are made of many people who don't always agree.”
“On the flip side, having no HOA in a sea of HOA neighborhoods also protects property value. We saw a significant increase in prices and homes in our district sold within days while the surrounding newer developments cannot sell. Personally I would never ever buy a home with HOA…”
“Address it? It addresses itself though? Was the HOA stupid? [re: Mushrooms in lawn, New England]”
Several posts detail frustrations with Homeowners Associations (HOAs) issuing fines and penalties related to lawn care. One homeowner received a violation notice shortly after moving in, while another described past negative experiences involving towing vehicles without explanation. A user warned of Florida HOAs' near-limitless power and potential for foreclosure.

“It’s OPs lawn/property and they can do as they wish. No reason to be a dick about it.”
“Least they are trying. I got people around me that mow every 3-4 months. With weeds 4+ feet tall in their flower beds. And they likely only mow because the HOA sends them a notice.”

“HOAs fine people for dead spots in their lawn. I don't agree with it, but they do.”
“Very very lovely grass and house - a bit too open to the sidewalk to my taste. Would personally put up a small hedge, but depends on your HOA of course.”
“You have some St Aug peeking through all the weeds. Sod the bare spots and get on fertilizing and weed killer..”
“It's Florida, are they supposed to have grass in that spot? If it isn't growing naturally, who cares.”
“WOW, don’t you even care about by-law rule 17 section C 3A-each lawn shall have 17 Kentucky bluegrass sprouts per sq inch. Some people”
“Just fuckin sell it. Some of these bitch ass HOAs try to set an example with a warning the second a house is sold. Fuckin losers”
“Because people continue to fund and buy into them, agreeing to let them dictate restrictions for them to live by.”
“This is exactly the type of thing that would happen to my in-laws after they tell me how great it is to live in a free state like Florida. Coincidentally, your neighborhood looks just like theirs.”
“Do you think those idiots can tell the difference between either? Just slap some st augustine sod in there and call it a day.”
“I would do three things: watch the YouTube “lawn care nut” beginner tips and tricks, plant some plugs of st Augustine, and contact the HOA and explain the situation.”
“it's more nuanced than that. It's only required if you have more than 20 houses in the development and there is shared infrastructure that must be spread across all the future owners (like maintenance of a community pool I assume). So you could still have a new development and not have an HOA, even in NC.”
“I know this varies, but if you don't have a million bucks to buy a bunch of land and want to live within an hour of your job and a hospital and within 30 minutes of a grocery store, you are pretty much buying into an HOA around me.”
“The only thing I learned from this post is I should never buy a house with an HOA.”
“On the flip side, having no HOA in a sea of HOA neighborhoods also protects property value. We saw a significant increase in prices and homes in our district sold within days while the surrounding newer developments cannot sell. Personally I would never ever buy a home with HOA either. I’d rather pay 50k more for the exact same house”
“I lived in one growing up pretty sure it was only there to cover trash pickup and snow removal. You never hear stories of the boring HOAs. That said I did have a bad experience with one in Florida where I had 2 vehicles towed for no reason…. Once one board member literally got run off that ended lol.”
“That sucks. I bought a house 2 years ago in western nc. We have 5 houses on our street, one nosy lady, one drug dealer, one redneck, one retiree, and me the most handsome man ever. We will never all agree on anything. So glad I didn’t buy in a neighborhood”
“Throw Bermuda down and water it like hell, it'll fill the spots within a week. Also it'll take over your entire lawn by the end of next year so if you prefer it there's that, if you don't well that sucks.”
“Per violation per instance. It's a new instance of the violation every day. Florida is known for giving HOAs insane power.”
“Better get on fixing it then. You have no recourse here, Florida gives HOAs insane power and as long as this is written somewhere in the rules/bylaws you must pay it. And failure to pay means they can place a lean on your home and force a foreclosure sale if you still don't pay since Florida has no minimum for a foreclosure sale. This is why you should never live in an HOA, they have near limitless power especially in states like Florida. Hire a pro yesterday to fix it”
“Lol you must not be familiar with the near limitless power of US HOAs. They can and do make any rules they want and can fine you without notice without warning and without giving you time to fix the issues. Additionally they can file a lien on your home which allows them to foreclose on your house and force a foreclosure sale to recoup the funds(then the bank gets paid back and then you get any equity remaining). And Florida has NO FORECLOSURE MINIMUM. Yea you heard that, failure to pay a $1 fin”
