“I have a midea mini slit ductless system. One of the units in my house is broken, tech says evaporator coil is corroded and needs replacement. But because the midea unit I have is old - model number: MEHSU-24CHD2 - the tech and HVAC company is having a hard time replacing it. I…”

Homeowners are shocked by high labor costs (over $800 per hour) quoted by HVAC contractors to replace coils on existing systems, even when the parts themselves are covered under warranty. The cost is so prohibitive that some homeowners question whether it's worth pursuing the repair.

“Hey folks, Sorry for yet another of these posts. I'm a relatively new homeowner in Southern California with a Carrier Infinity system. My HVAC company recently let me know that my system had a leak and recommended to schedule an isolation leak test. After two visits from the tech (one to do the leak search, another to look at the gauges) he let me know that the leak was from my evaporator coil and that it needed to be replaced. The isolation leak test cost $1200 and now the cost that they ar”

“Had low cooling and was recommended to replace the evaporator coil as the refrigerant was low on my Lennox XC16S048. The compressor stopped working during the install and I was quoted 8k to replace the compressor. I was also provided options to replace the entire unit. I am looking at about 17k to replace the entire thing after discounts for a Trane XR17. Does this look reasonable. Located in Austin TX. submitted by /u/Which-Ad-302 [link] [comments]”

“We moved into our Philadelphia house about a year ago, when it was roughly seven years old. Today was supposed to be our first routine seasonal HVAC inspection, but it ended with a recommendation to stop using the furnace and replace it. I researched local HVAC companies and picked one with excellent reviews. The owner seems very nice and trustworthy, so I’m taking the recommendation seriously. I just want to understand whether replacement is justified before committing. The furnace is a Goodman”

But because the midea unit I have is old - model number: MEHSU-24CHD2 - the tech and HVAC company is having a hard time replacing it. I need help looking for either a replacement unit or to replace the corroded coils (evaporator coil) I’ve looked on a lot of websites and stuff but I can’t find any readily available / parts in the US. “Bought this house in 2022 that was built in 2017. Previous owners did not register the unit so the 10 yr parts warranty expired the year I purchased the home. 2024 the coil had a leak. $2300 to replace. 2025 the blower motor died, another $500. Last week the unit stopped working and the diagnosis is the compressor shorted out. What are my options and recommendations regarding quotes. Thank you in advance submitted by /u/GoBills2020Atl [link] [comments]”

“I’m in the Atlanta area replacing a ~20-year-old system. Quote is $12,704 installed for: 3-ton Goodman SD R32 inverter/variable-speed AC (~16 SEER2) 80% AFUE 2-stage, variable-speed Goodman furnace Matching coil Communicating thermostat 12-year parts warranty 10-year labor warranty with their maintenance plan Full removal/install, permits, startup, etc. Reputable local company with strong reviews. Their basic 14.5 SEER2 single-stage Goodman system is $9,399 installed. Main question: Is $12.7k a”

“Hello, I have been doing HVAC for over two years now I started in July 2024 and have always been hourly and $400 for install whether it’s a package unit or condenser split system etc. I have been in my own truck since January. It is just the owner of the company and i that run all the service and maintenance except when we need to hire more guys to help with bigger installs. When I started, I would get a $200 kick if I was able to get someone to get a unit and he would close the sale after doing”

“recently got quoted by two different HVAC technicians for replacing my outside and inside unit as well as various other things listed in the quotes. One technician is charging $9300 for a 15 seer unit and the other technician is charging 12,500 for a 15.2 seer unit. I wanted to ask the experts if a 15.2 is technically different than a 15 seer unit or if thats just nuanced verbiage that wasn’t used by the technician that quoted me $9300 but it’s assumed it is a 15.2. Google says they’re different”

“2 Questions- 1. Micropower Guard - Charging $790 . Recommended this simply because we asked about our washable filters. We don't necessarily have any specific air quality complaints. 2. Coil Scrubber (UV Light) - $724 . The guy "noticed growth on the avaporator and on both the blower wheel and wires leading to the component. [He] cleaned the unit and returned power to disconnect to ensure unit operation". Afterwards, he went to show us pictures of the growth and said he was unable”

“I was quoted $5,800 for a new condenser and also includes a retrofit from R22 to R407C. Does this seam reasonable? EDIT: to clarify because I didn’t fully understand it. This would be a full replacement of a 2.5 ton condenser. My old one is R22, the new one would be R407C. I’m located in southwestern PA. submitted by /u/Pigscanflytoo [link] [comments]”

“TLDR Version: I paid $18,500 in January 2024 for a new HVAC system for my ~1,300 sq. ft. home (air handler model 820TA48070V17A-C). I chose a professional company because I wanted quality and accountability, despite acquaintances offering much cheaper replacement quotes. The system had issues almost immediately. The company serviced it in February 2024, then returned in June 2024 and found a refrigerant leak, replacing the A-coil and filter drier. After that, the system has heated/cooled the hou”

“My evaporator coil sprung a bad leak and I had a contractor out to assess and they said they’re unable to fix it so they’re recommending replacing it. I’ve been provided a quote for four options (attached) and they all have a heat pump included. I live in the the Chicago suburbs, so I have concerns with a heat pump but as I understand it, the heat pump cools, but also heats during milder cold weather, and switches to a gas furnace at a certain temperature threshold that can be set. My question i”

“Looking for some thoughts an opinions here. I replaced one of the two systems in my house in May 2020. At that time both systems were from the original build (1997) but at the time one of them seemed to still be running strong so I opted for only a single system replacement. At the time I was charged $5,700 for a Trane XR system ( invoice attached) which seemed like a reasonable price. Fast-forward to today and the other system finally decided to crap out so I am in the market again. This time a”

“I have a hydronic furnace and a 1.5 T side discharge AC that both require replacing. My high efficient water heater was replaced last year. I've received several quotes and have narrowed them down to three. There's approximately a $4k range in total cost with one smack dab in the middle. Of course this unexpected expense is unwelcome but life lessons have taught me price can't be the deciding factor unless comparing equivalents, and needs/expectations. “I’ve included pictures to illustrate. Looking for some opinions from this community and how I should approach the HVAC company to fix the issue. We paid $20k to replace our aging HVAC system with a new Bosch heat-pump system, including a new Honeywell zone board, two new damper motors, two Ecobee thermostats, and an enlarged 20” return duct. Since installation, the system has repeatedly failed to cool the house properly when both zones are running. Multiple service calls have identified damper p”

“It's a 3 ton system and is about 13 years old. Was struggling to cool the house in the middle of the day during summer but we recently had new insulation and an attic fan installed and it was keeping the house around 76 while it was 100+ outside. The compressor blew on Thursday and this is the quote we've had. They reckon 10k+ for a new system and they recommend the repair. I am pretty clueless in this area so was wondering how this all sounded. We're in Southern California. su”

“I have a wall mount mini split air handler that requires a condensate pump. The existing pump took a dump and an HVAC pro has quoted $900 to replace it. Upon pricing the replacement pump I opted to do it myself and save about $700. The only problem is I can't get the plastic housing off. The screws and retainers are all out but there are 5 clips across the top that clip it to the wall mounted framework that just won't release. Unfortunately, it's mounted so close to the ceiling I can”

“Hey everyone, looking for some advice from HVAC pros on how to handle a situation with a local company after a major tech blunder. The Situation: My central AC unit is 22 years old, but it was working perfectly fine until yesterday. A technician from our regular and typically reputable local company was doing yearly maintenance on the AC and accidentally punctured the evaporator coil inside the furnace plenum. The entire charge of refrigerant hissed out quickly. The tech admitted to the mistake”

“Looks like a lot of stuff is dead or dying on my hvac according to the tech I had out here. They are quoting me about 8k for repairing the essentials and somewhere under 15k for a replacement of all the parts. Im still waiting on the quote but I think its essentially the blower motor, the coil, refrigerant and possibly something else. Is it worth shopping around or getting a second opinion or would it just be a waste of fees for other companies to come out and look? I dont think im interested if”

“As the tech told me, it's about a 4-6 hour job so even on the long side of time to complete the coil swap it's over $500 an hour labor, if they finish in 4 hours it's like $800 an hour which is nuts. I spoke with his manager and he said "we don't want to lose you as a customer but we feel we're priced competitively." They installed the system just over 3 years ago so it still has 9 years of parts warranty left and the coil is 100% replaced for free but it still seem”

“We’re having a patio put in the backyard and the current placement of my AC unit will put it almost smack in the middle of the patio. I asked my contractor what it would take to move it about 7ft to the corner of my house or possibly 15ft around the corner and they told me it’d be too much work/hassle and costly to move. The unit is I think 6 or 7 years old. Is this really that big of a deal? My crawl space is very accessible and we’d be moving the unit closer to where the furnace is in my garag”
