Several new content creators express anxiety and self-consciousness about how their voice sounds when recorded for videos. They find it a common, universal experience among those starting out.

“early on I was but I powered through it and now after having to play back my voice 1000 of times, it's whatever to me [re: Is anyone else concerned about their voice?]”
“Do it! I think we're overthinking this [re: Is anyone else concerned about their voice?]”
“I'm still stuck. I want to do voice-overs & I feel weird hearing my own voice😭 [re: Is anyone else concerned about their voice?]”
“Comes with time and experience i guess [re: Is anyone else concerned about their voice?]”
“What i did was speed up my narration by .2 and it kiiinda helps. It won't magically make you sound better but it feels less awkward when i play it back. [re: Is anyone else concerned about their voice?]”
“Indeed. I still muster the courage to put the videos out there tho haha [re: Is anyone else concerned about their voice?]”
“Oh i did speed up my narration by .2 to make it a little more dynamic, kinda helps. [re: Is anyone else concerned about their voice?]”
“Yes, strange phenomenon isn't it [re: Is anyone else concerned about their voice?]”
“I hated the sound of my voice too. But you quickly get used to it while editing your video for an hour and you hear your voice on repeat. I don’t think anything of it, now. [re: Is anyone else concerned about their voice?]”
“Editing someone else's anxiety about their own voice is a special kind of hell. You're giving them a free service and they're treating you like a subcontractor. Maybe set a firm "one round of minor tweaks only" rule before the next recording. If they balk, they can start their own damn podcast. [re: I just started and am already thinking about quitting]”
“i think it depends on what kind of accent it is and how clear your delivery is. i watch channels with prominent accents, but they speak freely and loudly, which can come across as confidence despite any mistakes they make & despite their accents. some are more Eastern European leaning accents, some East Asian, some Middle Eastern, and some Caribbean. my accent wasn’t the best when i was younger, but i learned more watching western shows & got better at it myself, and had a few friends fr”

“Yea, I personally loathe my own voice; I just hear a high pitched tone and a thick lisp due to an insecurity; yet everyone thinks I'm insane because I have a very calming and soothing voice. Without even telling anyone, I'll be recording an interview for my day job and I'll get asked if I've thought about working for NPR. We're critical of our own voices the same way we're critical of the way we look in pictures because we're seeing our reflection mirrored and that”
“Hello I'm starting a channel for true crime horror narration, as It is one of my favorite types of content to consume, and I just love scary stuff. I can't help but notice that my voice sounds unenthusiastic, how can I fix this ? should I slow down the reading speed, or maybe something else. I'm honestly thinking of deleting what I've done so far and resetting I'm just not sure here is the link to an 8 minute story I told. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AVyFWRKpwbry1sQodzje”
“It took me 5 or 6 times to re-record my first video. I don't know why, but I was very scared of something for some reason. How do you deal with anxiety when it comes to filming videos? submitted by /u/romanshelby [link] [comments]”
“the voice you hear in the recording is not the voice everyone else hears. this is voice confrontation and it is a real psychological phenomenon. your recorded voice sounds unfamiliar because you normally hear yourself through bone conduction plus air. the recording is air only. your brain flags it as wrong. it is not wrong. it is just different. the cringe is real but the fix is not better editing. it is better preparation. here is why: every 'um' and 'uh' happens because your br”
“I got nervous recording myself and trying to be expressive. I'm fluent in english but it's not language i speak most of time. I guess i fumbled it trying not to sound monotonous. I already made another channel for nightlife specifically only posted 1 video which is about to cross 10k in 2 weeks. I wouldn't say making video stand out is the root of problem as of now. That would mean people watched it and didn't find it interesting enough. Right now, travel videos are getting traff”
“I've just recorded my first video with my voice and it TERRIBLE I sound like I'm chocking It probably bc of my phone voice recording quality but idk Any advice would be appreciated It naimxd please give me opinion on the voice submitted by /u/YahiYahiXD [link] [comments]”
“Try tweaking your EQ before you overthink it. Boost the mids a bit and tame those high frequencies. It cuts down on that harsh, squeaky tone and gives a female voice way more warmth and depth so you sound more grounded without having to force a lower pitch.”
“Give it a shot use your real voice. It's awkward at first but it gets better eventually”
“Yesterday, I posted my first video online. It was just me staring into my camera for 14 seconds. I can't talk into a camera. Not at all. Not even just saying one word. Today, I had an assignment where I had to record a speech for assessment, and I nearly cried just thinking about doing it. No joke, no exaggeration. I was on the verge of tears, and it was only 2 minutes long. I did not want to do that. The thought of me recording myself talking to nobody but a camera absolutely freaks me out.”
this is the right question tbh, a lot of people skip this step entirely
“Practice makes perfect. A lot of people umm and err during conversations, it’s normal”
“I still hate everything about my face and voice but after doing it a while you just deal with it. Most people think that way so you’re not alone. As an interviewer just do your research and make sure the guest has fun.”
“Let yourself be yourself! Those filler words are part of what make you you, and you can’t please everyone…some people make a thing about them but meh, they’re part of human conversation. I also saw comments from podcast listeners at some point actually saying that they didn’t like the total lack of “filler words” and gaps in super polished, edited podcasts so its like, you can’t win ‘em all, might as well focus on connecting and enjoying yourself.”
“I've always been told my voice sounded childish like, especially on the phone. Idk, i dont think i do but imma just get used to it when i go back and listen to my recordings.”
“Thank you! I'll try to get used to my own voice in my recordings ans embrace the sound of my voice.”
It's cringe everytime. I just got used to it, used to tolerating it.
“Hi! The title says it all, lol. I have recorded vids but i deleted them due to my voice. Idk how others can just sit and recorded and listen to themselves. I dont hate my voice but hearing it makes it feels like this level of werid or cringe, lol. I have been told i have a child like voice, my accent is either to deep to understand or that I just simply talk too fast for others to understand. I do talk pretty fast, most people in my city and state talk either fast or have an accent that makes th”
“I hated my voice until I got a microphone that’s separate from my phone. I still don’t love it but it’s much better. Also, we should love ourselves but yeah, easier said than done.”
“I’ve been overly cautious about using my voice because personally I don’t think it sounds the same in person as it does recorded…”
“To a degree but it gets better with practice, I mean I have a lisp and so at time I will have to repeat a line or complete change it so I don’t capture but I’ve had times where I’ve been like fuck it and put it in the video. A lot of people really don’t care and at the end of the day just be yourself”
“From what I learnt, we don't sound as bad to others as we do to ourselves. And if this is your first video with voice in it, you will find problems which you will fix yourself on later videos based on intuition. If you get any comment giving you constructive criticism, listen to that advice and if it is just a hate comment, just laugh it off.”
“You get used to hearing yourself after a little while. You can’t make it deeper, but editing in audacity or a similar program to increase quality can help. I doubt anyone will really care about the pitch, and if they do, that’s just free engagement and a free talking point for you”
“I mean, I think about it not for the actual pitch or tone but if whether I'm getting all the terrible BG audio.”
“Don’t listen to them. I prefer a real voice over ai any day. Anytime I get one of this ai voice videos, I dislike it. Even if the video is well done, I hate hearing those generic ai voices”
“Be yourself unapologetically. And don’t worry about the comments. Any negativity thrown your way via a comment is no reflection on you 🫶🏼”
“I'm working on a long video rn that'll have my voice in it. Basically just and introduction video though I'm quite nervous cause my voice is really high and I don't want everyone in the chat talking abt how i sound like a lil kid so ya... submitted by /u/Art_Lover_20267 [link] [comments]”
