Painters, particularly those focused on portraits, find creating realistic and engaging backgrounds challenging. They seek guidance on techniques for painting backgrounds, especially landscapes and complex scenes, and are open to impressionistic styles.

I'm an adult in their 30s who's picked up acrylic painting as a hobby. I'm so enjoying the process of learning to mix colours and different techniques. I mostly follow YouTube step by step tutorials while I'm learning. I would love to get better at water and depth in general. Are there any good youtubers to follow? submitted by”

“As the title says, i would be very appreciative if yall could give me an honest critique. Its been 4-5 years since ive painted and that was when i was like. 11-ish? Anyways, it took me 4 hours, i wish i had taken much more time but if im being honest i was just in an artsy mood and wanted to do something relaxing. “I paint about once a year around December to make gifts for people. This is one of my best works, but I wish I had made the sky a bit more muted though. I was working off a ref since I’m not good enough yet to imagine stuff and do it for the most part. I’ll get ideas but it’s like they’re just a bit too foggy to put to canvas yet. I almost threw it away halfway through but I’m glad I finished it. submitted by /u/Flower_in_space [link] [comments]”

“I'm working on a painting that I started kind of randomly a few months ago and than forgot about lol. I picked it up again and I'm not sure what to do with the background, so I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on what could work. I'm attaching the painting and the reference photo 💞 thanks for any advice 😊 submitted by /u/lentilka13995 [link] [comments]”

“Hello! Looking for *gentle* critique/guidance. Ive always focused on portraits without much background. This is my first project with a complex desert background. Ive tried painting from photos of deserts and mountains, but im really struggling. Ive even watched YouTube tutorials. They dont need to be super realistic, kind of slightly impressionist maybe? The foreground hasn't been touched a whole lot. But I mostly need help with the top 1/3 of the painting. Thanks for any help/tips/quick re”
