“Not FIRE yet (46m), but went part time this year as a slow wind down. Off on Wednesday and Friday and quickly realizing that all my friends are at work when I’m off. Two young kids (6&9) are at school all day. For the time being, no big deal, but when I fully FIRE in a few years…”
“This summer, I have noticed that I can’t turn off “teachering.” I have 2 to 3 extra kids in my house every day. I don’t mind because what’s two or three compared to 25 lol. I enjoy having them around. But the other thing…is my adult friends. They are all going through something…”

“I leave work at 3:45, pick my daughters up and don't think about work again until tomorrow when I'm back in school.”
“Luckily, I have not done this yet, but in past jobs that were less stable such as retail I would have a terrible tendency to call in sick on days that I wasn’t out of stress. submitted by /u/Weak-Paint-1648 [link] [comments]”
“Hi everyone, I need support/help on how to manage teaching and parenting because we're 2-3 weeks back to school, and I'm already burning out, crying, and just counting down to June. I teach core gr8 FSL in Quebec (English school board) and I have 3 boys at home (3,5,7). I feel like the behaviors and maturity of my students is basically on par, if not lower than, that of my own kids. The constant touching each other, the lack of emotional regulation, the inability to do anything on their”

Two young kids (6&9) are at school all day. For the time being, no big deal, but when I fully FIRE in a few years it seems like my options are to make friends with AARP members or learn to have fun solo. “I’m a first year teacher (started in January) and I am completely exhausted. Last spring, I used to go to bed as soon as I got home each night. To be fair, I had a really rough group and 0 support from admin. I’m at a new school now where the admin is amazing and so are the kids, but I’m still so tired. It’s not as bad as my old school though thankfully. Now, for the most part I can stay up long enough to cook dinner but I’m still in bed by 8 to wake up at 5 the next morning. I feel so unproduct”
“I’m a teacher and I still have around three weeks of summer break left, but I’ve already started feeling quite anxious about going back to work in September. The strange thing is that I’m not necessarily unhappy with my job. I actually like teaching, but when I think about September, my mind immediately goes to everything that could go wrong: difficult students, demanding parents, conflicts, workload, lack of free time, etc. I also have an online job that I do during my free time, so I’”
“I’m a teacher headed back to school this week. Really feeling sad about not spending every day with my daughter. We’ve had a beautiful summer. She’s 6 and growing up so fast. Any other teacher moms here? How do you beat the blues? submitted by /u/Comfortable-Pea-948 [link] [comments]”
“My wife and I both taught in the same district our kids went to so we had all the same breaks and enjoyed it very much. They're in their 30s now.”
“I'm a teacher, so I have a different schedule in the summer, and I'm getting really emotional about the school year starting again. Because of how early I need to get to work, I don't get to see my son in the mornings. My husband wakes him and and takes him to daycare and this all happens after I've left for work. I get really sad about this. It feels so hard to say goodnight and to know I won't see him again until 4:15pm the next day. It feels like everyone else i know is a”
“The summertime guilt hit me hard today…. My husband and I both work pretty demanding jobs but we try so hard to still be there for our kids and spend quality time with them. My sister in law and her husband are both teachers so they are off with their kids all summer. We let our two older kids (7 and 5) sleep over with their cousins on Thursday then go to the beach on Friday with them. Then yesterday we celebrated my daughter’s 7th birthday at our community center pool which is like a mini water”
“I like doing this too, it comforts me & gets me excited for the opportunity to make some really solid connections with a new class of kiddos. Additionally, i like thinking of the 1 or 2 kids that I am happy to no longer have as students 😂”
“Whenever it's time to return to school from break, which I will do in two weeks, I find myself agitated and depressed. Granted, almost noone wants to work vs being able to have the freedom to do other things, but it's something I find that makes teaching difficult. It's hard going from having extra time, (and that's with my summer side gigs) , being able to eat decent lunches, not begin work at 7 am and not being in constant GO mode to being swamped at work. It's such a massi”
“Hi! FTM here who is a teacher. My LO was born end of April and i was on maternity leave until the end of the school year and currently on summer break and will be returning to work at the beginning of the school year in September. While working, my husband will watch baby majority of the time (he is a first responder and works only 2 24 hour shifts a week) with my mom or MIL helping out the days we both work. My LO will be 12 weeks Monday. I know he is still young but I am trying to think ahead”
“I started teaching later in life, once my youngest kid was in middle school and I had less to do during the day as a SAHM. When the kids were little I was always busy with them and once they weren’t home all day or needing me at elementary school I was bored as hell so I started subbing and eventually became a teacher. Now I find I’m feeling that same boredom during the summer. Husband works so he doesn’t have time to run all over the place. My friends live far away. I’ve been sitting at home cr”
“This is my first summer as a teacher and I could not for the life of me spend my June comfortably without feeling guilty for not working and now that it’s July , my body is letting me be comfortable but now school starts soon again 😭 anyone felt like this ? submitted by /u/NoelK132 [link] [comments]”

I enjoy having them around. But the other thing…is my adult friends. They are all going through something right now and I swear I could probably log therapy hours. I teach in an Inner city elementary school so Im fairly experienced in soothing and talking through emotions, but dang lol! Anyone else who can’t turn off being ”t”

“I've been teaching for 10 years but this last year was particularly stressful and draining as I was teaching Kindergarten in a badly organized school. I was also getting ready to move continents, which I did in June. I've been off more than a month now and I still feel drained. I'll sleep 10 hours, then nap for 2 or more during the day. I have things to do including fitness goals and redecorating but have only been watching series and napping. Does this sound like normal burnout or s”
“I'm a teacher and I have been anxious all day today like something is going to happen. I made myself move my body and tried to get out of my head. I don't know if it's school around the corner or that I have only had a few days off. I am teaching summer school because if I stayed home all summer I wouldn't do anything at all. I recently started Zoloft again. Anyways that's all. I just can't calm down for some reason. submitted by /u/Pristine_Ninja8457 [link] &”
“We have off mid June - end of July. Go back first week of August. 6 weeks. I spend the first two traveling and recovering from travel, then the next 4 in retirement mode. Traveling right away shakes up my routine and headspace enough that when I return I feel like I’m in a different place.”
“Ok I'm not sure if I'm just overreacting or just feeling like a crap mom but I need advice or opinions pleaseeee. And let me preface this by saying yes I know it could be way worse, I could have a daycare teacher who doesn't care at all and ignores him. I do completely understand that. My baby is 11 months and almost every pick up from daycare, no matter what time of day, this teacher is holding my child and not any of the others. It's a smaller class only 5 to 6 infants. But mos”
“I’m a teacher with a 16 month old daughter and husband who is a SAHD. I typically work 55+ hours a week when school is in session. One big downside, other than missing my baby all the time, is that she literally never has needed or wanted me. Even when she was a newborn, I wasn’t able to nurse and I exclusively pumped for 7 months. I was more physically attached to the pump than to her. She has always preferred and needed her dad more than me. She never was all that happy to see me when I came h”
“Dads its happened - I am feeling burnt out and fed up. Ive always been a level headed guy and never get super high or super low, but the last few months have been a drag. We have a 6 year old and a 7 week new born. I work a stressful job from home and every day is just tedious. 4 or 5 hours sleep, get kid ready for school, take him to school, work till 6, do dinner, bath, bed, cook dinner, feed baby, watch TV, and do it all over again. Wife is great - she takes the newborn all day and does more”
“I'm 28 years old and when the school year finishes I always feel pretty lonely. My colleagues look forward to summer but I would like to keep on working. I am not saying students should go to school on july and August, but is there an alternative to not doing anything? I am from Italy and our country is known for the longest period of vacation / free time for teachers in Europe. I've got some friends but they are far from where I live, I have many hobbies so I am not getting bored these”
“We have paid summers in my country so we get like 2 weeks without the kids before we go on summer break. I do a lot of prep during those two weeks and then i literally just forget what work is.”
“Your mind has been in "work mode" for so long that it needs time to adjust. Try setting aside just 15–20 minutes once a week for school planning, then give yourself permission to enjoy the rest of your summer without guilt. Rest is part of being a better teacher too.”
“Hi everyone, I just finished my first full year teaching in a school, and I’m finally on summer break, which lasts about two and a half months. It’s been about two weeks since the break started, but I am having a really hard time winding down. Instead of relaxing, I feel like I'm still stuck in "survival mode." I spend a huge chunk of my day stressing over September. My mind is constantly racing with thoughts about next year: What will my schedule look like? How will I coordinat”
“By the end of a work week, I'm mentally and emotionally exhausted. I don't want to spend a Friday night partying, and on Saturdays I spend solo to recharge. Sundays are spent mentally preparing for the week. I love teaching, but by the end of the week, I have no energy to expand on big social events, and almost everyone I do know already has a huge social network, and if they do want to do something, it's usually some place loud and crowded like a bar. Like, I don't want to be an”
“I’d like to hear from other teachers who are in a similar situation. At the moment, I work three mornings a week as a cover teacher, and I also work at an independent music academy, which is currently my main job. My classes there start at 3:30 pm and finish anywhere between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm. To be honest, I feel like I have no social life and no personal time. By the time I get home, it’s quite late, and I often end up having dinner very late. Since moving to European country and starting th”
“Today I just feel fed up with the kids I've worked with all year and have come to love. Truly I can't do it anymore, summer couldn't get here fast enough. I feel like I've been constantly, vigilantly self-regulating today so I don't snap over something small. TGI June I guess. submitted by /u/Zealousideal-Ad3609 [link] [comments]”
“I haven't been teaching history/English/science since I got COVID over and over (and over) and decided it was better to go than be a risk to my cherished kids (or die myself, it got bad). After a lot of introspection... Question is: is teaching a performance? I pretended everything was okay no matter what, I used the materials I prepared for display, passed out charts and data dramatically, presented media and did simulations. It feels like I was a performance artist? You give so much to kid”
“Hi. My mom is in her late 40s. She's been a kindergarten teacher for about 15 years, did some odd jobs beforehand, most notably at a telecom. agency. The education system in our country is fucked and getting progressively moreso every year. It's her and another teacher for a class of 20-30 kids, a third of them with severe behavioral issues or learning disabilities. They'd all need a personal assistant or at the very least a doctor/children's therapist, but that”
“I work as a teacher and today was my last day before 7 weeks off. I should feel joy and freedom when I walked out of the school building but all I could feel was stress and anxiety. We have a very demanding soon to be 5yo and a 1,5yo. I almost felt as if id rather keep working. I feel like a horrible parent for feeling this way and not looking forward to the summer holiday. Can anyone else recognize this feeling and tell me I’m not alone in this? submitted by /u/K-Loaf [link] [”
“Hello. My school system is still in session. Vacation begins at the end of June. The problem I have: in May, in less than ten days, my husband suffered life threatening episode and my mother had a stroke and in less than 24 hours died in the hospital at 68. It was horrible. I took a medical leave of absence to be with my husband. I’m supposed to come back at work FOR THE LAST SCHOOL DAY ONLY. And that’s because I decided that I’d be appropriate to come back the last day to say goodbye to our cla”
“My wife and I both teach and have the summer off together. I always tell people how blessed we are to have that much extra time together as a family that not many people get. Our kids are 6, almost 4, and 1. Currently the 6 and 4 year old are developing the habit of getting up around 630 and turning the tv on. Shows are nothing inappropriate, (Bluey, recently found Sheriff Callie and they love it) but they both are ones that will zone out. We appreciated it in the beginning because we could actu”
“I'm finishing off my semester one reports and trying to meet all the requirements of a legal and professional document while still reporting honestly. Sometimes I wish I could just outright say what I think. Like this kid: 'On occasion, when conflict has arisen outside of the classroom, Student has been unsure of how to handle it. He would benefit from further development of problem solving and resilience strategies.' Translation - when Student doesn't win, he h”
