“I like full control and I like to hoard. I have several terabytes of models, no one can kill those, no internet required, full security and privacy. If I want to use fine tunes? No problem; that's a whole new world in itself that you cannot access via API. My primary use case is…”
“I guess it is time for a raspberry pi Thank you for suggestion, this solves my reboot issue being a headless server”
“What did you see breaking? I use it for years and years, update mid-month and only had a problem once, 3 or 4 years ago.”
Several users have stopped running various applications on their home servers due to the ongoing effort required for upkeep, including debrid backups and Windows OS. This suggests a need for simpler or more automated self-hosted solutions that reduce administrative overhead.

“A better app that wasn’t vibe coded. [re: What would it take for you to leave Plex/Jellyfin/Emby?]”
“I like full control and I like to hoard. I have several terabytes of models, no one can kill those, no internet required, full security and privacy. If I want to use fine tunes? No problem; that's a whole new world in itself that you cannot access via API. My primary use case is coding in a harness. In a day I can burn through a few million tokens easy. I often spend 6+ hours a day, after my work shift, doing my own projects. On weekends if I don't have plans I can do 15+ hour days. I am”
“I was an Emby user before they chose to move to a closed source model and decided that Jellyfin was a fraud. I'm a happy JF user since then. And JF12 is really great and fast. I couldn't care less of Emby now.”
“The same. First time I used that product was when it was called "Arcada Backup" around 1994. Such a nice product. The Symantec bought it and enshittified it.”
“We went from Barracuda to Commvault a couple of years ago in a smaller environment than yours. Yeah it's way more features than we need, but it works really well and we actually pay less for it. We run a similar backup schedule to you, but also do database snapshots every 2 hours. We also have cloud backups to an S3 target. As far as support goes, our VAR handles frontline support and escalates to Commvault if needed, but I don't think they've ever had to escalate anything on our beh”
“This is exactly what I am worried with TrueNAS aswell. It's possible, but I think it's unlikely. TrueNAS doesn't sell software AFAIK: they sell fully-supported hardware solutions that run their software, unlike Portainer or other software-only companies. The main reason they have a community edition (CE) is to use the free users as unpaid beta testers for their enterprise software, plus the free users frequently end up getting their companies to buy the enterprise gear through recomm”
“Running Jellyfin isn't hard ? You just need to open an app and clic on your show (I created her profile so only her show appear on the screen) Why would you be shitting yourself ? Block everyone from another country, and since i'm in France .. well, there isn't a lot of people using french IP to attack french people I guess ? And i'm still behind a proxy with some restrictive rules with crowdsec !”
“Backrest is a much more reliable non-vibecoded alternative, it's not that much harder to use.”
+++++1 easiest to use and setup and also very very reliable
“Dude that's why we're all here. I'm about to ruin some lives here.... https://selfh.st/apps has been the devil for me. If you think you have installed everything you don't need or never use already, think again. Before you open that link it's probably best to write a note to your loved ones that it was nice knowing them and you hope to see them again some time in the future.”
“seems like a cool idea! i got into self-hosting to: get out of the whole "ads you have to pay every month in perpetuity to get rid of" thing have total control over how and where software runs keep my information and accounts off other people's infrastructure as much as possible and this project flies in the face of all of those, so i'm out. good luck with the project though!”
“I guess it is time for a raspberry pi Thank you for suggestion, this solves my reboot issue being a headless server”
“Nice, how long did it take to filter out the noise? Considering doing this myself”
“On top of that avoiding a flood of alerts drowning out the important ones For me it was a long process of trial and error, routinely auditing logs every few days to build rules to weed out nuisance alerts. Now I've got a pretty good baseline, and anything L10+ gets sent to my phone via Ntfy.”
“I dont use Dahboard for system alerts, I use uptimekuma for that. It feels more dependable.”
“No idea why they never EOL'd it. I mean, it's none of DigitalOcean's business what OS your instance is running. But I am quite curious what the underlying infrastructure at DigitalOcean is, as if they don't have any live VM migration functionality, that means the VM host would also be 3000+ days”
Yeah. The last time I used BackupExec was....2010 or 2011...
“Home assistant cloud backups are so useful and can be automated every night. Sorry to hear about the other stuff. I am raw dogging this shit and i really shouldn't but dont have the set up for regular backups its definitely something I need to address soon!”
“i run nfty server on a cheap vps for like 8 months now, its pretty light honestly. i have maybe 30 devices connected and the ram usage stays under 100mb most times. go is fast enough for this dont think the language matters that much here, both will handle thousands of users fine if you got decent hardware. the bottleneck is usually the network and database, not what language the server written in nfty has more settings like you said, which is nice if you want fine control over notification prio”
“Computers use restic to backup on the nas 3 or 4 times a day then the nas rclone syncs the restic repo to backblaze daily. It's great because if i need to restore, i can use the restic client directly on the backblaze b2 bucket in case my nas is down.”
“If that host is what worries me, honestly, more than the SSH access. If that box hiccups, you're not restoring one VM, you're restoring everything on it at once.”
“Oh gosh that reminds me of that guy who plugged in all his backups to do something or another and rm -rf'd his entire hosting company.”
“6-8 watts is 10% of my server consumption. And it's not just the storage that's less used, it's ram, cpu, fans, ... I was amazed to see on Beszel how much ram is used by services I never use. And point the point might not be to stop de server at night, but to not be at 90% usage all the time for, by the way, nothing when you have one user and a small server.”
“I have stopped running Calibre, freshrss, Nextcloud, nginx, and wavelog. Calibre because I can’t be arsed to setup ssl to connect to and and I do enough in the interface to just run it locallly on my workstation. Freshrss because I don’t actually follow enough sites to warrant it. (or look at the ones I follow) Nextcloud was one I tried to set up to replace iCloud/Google Drive/photos/etc but I found it overly complicated for my needs Nginx because I have never actually bothered to set up a rever”
“My plan for this is setting up a deadman switch connected to my calendar and detecting my phone on the network, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. In theory the flow would be something like: * track phone connectivity to network * if no phone connectivity for 6 days, check calendar * If no calendar events, send text message for confirmation/reset * If no confirmation for 24 hours, send configured email with instructions This works for me because I put literally everything on my calendar”

“Same hole here, my housemate says “it doesn’t bother me” and fair enough, but it SHOULD”
“Do you mean keepass? I've been using KeepAss for ages, it is very simple in that it's just a file, you do the syncing yourself. I've been using Syncthing for syncing, it being p2p works great since there's no central server it is reliant on, so if two devices are online, even with a server down, they'll happily sync the file.”
“Can you expand on that? I added AI API so I can add from videos and pictures but most times it isn't really working.”
“For me the benefit of Jellyfin (apart from watching outside of home) was syncing the watched status and episode progress for multiple devices. If you don't watch stuff outside of home or have one device you watch stuff on, not much benefit to Jellyfin imo”
“Thanks for the info, that's the sort of approach I wanted to implement! Also, I appreciate the purity of FOSS so will stick with FreeIPA and Keycloak as well.”
Replaced mine with Pocket-ID (via k8s operator). Pretty happy with it.
“I just picked up a new machine for my homelab so it'll soon end up as my secondary pihole. If I had it (or another pi) from the start I'd probably have gone that route instead of whitelisting.”
“Anything that i need with minimal downtime. Currently for me, that is my bitwarden(vaultwarden)”
