Creators are experiencing a painful disconnect between their initial design vision and the final, tangible product. The process of bringing designs to life reveals a complex reality involving materials, construction, and details often overlooked in digital creation, leading to frustration and a re-evaluation of what 'making' truly means. This gap impacts both individual projects and startup launches.

“The 2 or 3 colors you picked are where the MOQ math breaks. Each shade carries its own dye minimum at the mill, so 1 style in 3 colors is really 3 minimums, and the first batch lands closer to sample pricing than wholesale. What kills these brands is rarely the print, it is the size curve: you buy S to XL in a ratio, the middle sells out, the ends sit, and the money for style two is stuck in the leftover XLs.”

“I'm planning a women's pyjama and loungewear brand in India. Current situation: - Looking at small-batch production runs with a manufacturer - Target: premium-minimal designs. The Indian pyjama market seems flooded with the same floral/full-print patterns - I want clean, solid, "aesthetic" pieces that look good on Instagram - Budget is limited, so thinking one style, 2-3 colors, small first batch to test - Plan is D2C through Instagram + maybe marketplaces later Questi”

“Every prototyper who I've worked with has signed an NDA, some on my insistence and some on theirs. Its textile, so I just need the thing built and the kinks worked out. Its one thing for me to sketch it out, its another to see how all the moving parts work in the real world.”

“Padding? In sleepwear? Do you have an example of the commercially made ones you are using for inspiration?”

r/smallbusinessSep 13

“Just from a UX perspective. You’re loading the experience for every shirt on the same page. Why? Each one does the same exact thing and there is nothing on the back of the shirt. My point, you’re using all this compute that should be reserved for a separate product page respectively. Example, show the shirt as is with the text and then on the shirt/[id] page do the cool 3.js experience. Right now it’s really slow for me. But I’m in the USA idk where your servers are focused.”

r/SideProjectSep 13

“I’d probably choose a middle ground: keep the type small enough to feel like a detail from a distance, but make the first line readable at arm’s length. A simple test is to put the mockup next to a real shirt photo and view both as a thumbnail—if the joke disappears completely, it’s too restrained. The production-ready/commit messages are a nice touch; I’d keep one or two designs more legible for people who want an easy conversation starter.”

“So for the past two years, I've had a very specific dress design that I wanted, that would need to be made overseas. It is what I would consider "my dream dress". However, some of my close friends got married this year and were advising me that the wedding dress really doesn't need to be a big deal, and that as a bride, I will look good in any well-fitting dress whose general silloute and style is my taste. I want to ask brides who've had their wedding or are just about to,”

“My dad runs a clothing manufacturing business here in South Korea. Most of the work currently comes through middlemen/distributors, and they mainly make things like golfwear, knit polos, and premium fabric tops, including products that end up being sold in the US. The concept already exists in a small way, but there's a real gap in how it's positioned and sold, and I've mapped out exactly how to hit that gap. Here's the deal: I'm not asking for money. I'm asking for manufacturing capacity. You produce a trial batch of 100 units, using materials/specs I provide. I handle 100% of marketing, sales, and operations the par”

“I'm not gonna lie, the mockup gives me heavy indie game concept art vibes and I mean that as a compliment. There's something about illustrated luggage that feels way more personal than slapping a logo on a black shell and calling it a day. The trick is gonna be durability because people will absolutely drag these through airport hell and back, so the printing method better be bomb proof or it'll look shredded after two trips. If you can crack the material side where the art stays cri”

“The most expensive lesson I've learned building a heavyweight apparel brand (Deadweight) is that I did it in the wrong order. I obsessed over the product first. Fabric weight, tubular knit, the right blank, a fit that survives the wash. All of that matters and I don't regret it. But I treated the brand identity as something I'd figure out later, and later is a brutal place to figure it out. Here's what nobody tells you: a good product with no point of view is just inventory. “Saw this 3D printed mannequin at an Adidas store in my city. Found it interesting, I didn't expect it tbh. I guess it makes sense considering the detail in the hair and all that, but Adidas is a big brand I expected they have enough volume and need to justify using injection moulding rather than 3D printing for something like this. Either way, very interesting, wanted to share. submitted by /u/TheOriginalNukeGuy [link] [comments]”

“i’m the only person behind a small brand called nealty. i’m launching a reusable cooling gel face mask for people who wake up with morning puffiness. instead of putting fake reviews on a website, i’d rather send a few out for free and hear what real people actually think. i’m looking for 5 people who genuinely deal with morning puffiness to use it for about a week. each one ships brand new and sealed, and it’s just a gel pack, no serums or actives, nothing that touches or absorbs into your skin.”

“I've been building a small apparel project over the past few months, and one lesson keeps surprising me. I thought most of my time would go into creating the design. I've changed garment choices because the fabric didn't match the vision. I've even gone back to redesign branding details after reali”

“When I opened my store, the painkiller was simple: people wanted Indigenous streetwear they could actually be proud to wear, and no one was making it for them. That was not a nice-to-have. It was an identity people had been missing on the shelf their whole lives, so the product sold itself the moment it existed. So a bit of a unique case :)”

“Totally agree with this. It's wild how many creators think a logo is enough to do the heavy lifting for their brand, but it’s really about the entire vibe and story you’re putting out there. If you don’t define your identity, it’ll just be a mishmash of whatever trends are floating around, and good luck standing out in that crowd.”

“With all this talk of the promise of design, it's worth taking a step back. When we talk about design, what are we talking about? Lawyers' main misconception about design is that it is about making something look prettier, sharper, better. Most people reduce design to aesthetics, like font choice, color, or PowerPoint slide templates. It’s about superficial appearance, how something looks. Appearance is certainly a major factor in the design of a thing, but it is not all of what design h”

“For me it’s the effortless Parisian capsule wardrobe. I love it on other women, but when I try it, I feel too plain - almost like I’m wearing someone else’s personality. Same with oversized Scandi style. It looks amazing, but on me it quickly goes from “cool” to “I gave up.” 😅 I’m learning that liking an aesthetic and actually feeling good in it are two very different things.”

“I agree the basics matter: real garment measurements, model info, size worn, clear fit descriptions, and a mobile-friendly size guide should be standard. But I wouldn’t call virtual try-on just a gimmick. I’ve had this hesitation myself a lot when buying clothes online. In-store, you put the piece on and you know pretty quickly if it works for you. Online, even with measurements, there’s still this doubt: “Yeah, it might fit, but will it actually look good on me?” That’s the gap I think it can h”

“Virtual try ons for clothing are a gimmick, I think the only potential use case for that would be glasses? Here’s what worked for us: actual garment measurements, not a generic size guide. Model info (height, measurements) and the size they are wearing. Clear product descriptions that explain if it’s designed to be more fitted or more loose, most retailers focus on keyword stuffing instead of their actual paying customer, you can keep most of that in your code for site crawlers. To be fully transparent, I originally used AI-generated visuals because I’m not personally an illustrator.
