Multiple owners are concerned about their dogs experiencing bleeding and damage to their paw pads, particularly after playing on grass or rocky dirt. The soft pads of pitbulls seem especially vulnerable.

“Hi everyone, I’m looking for advice or experiences from anyone whose dog has had a similar paw problem. My dog has been intermittently limping on his right front leg for over four months. It started after he stepped on chewing gum, which got stuck to…”
“So Friday morning my dog woke up with a bad limp. She’s a ten year old terrier and is healthy overall, rarely has any issues. After having a look, it looked like a small graze or cut between her toes, nothing I could see was physically stuck or wedged between them. I got some dog safe antiseptic and kept an eye for the next few days. Fast forward to now, it’s swollen, red and she’s limping less but it looks worse, she’s shaky and not herself. Before anyone says why haven’t you taken her to a vet”
“Tonight our elderly dog somehow ripped of the entirety of one of her nails. There was a lot of bleeding. It has since stopped. She seems fairly unfazed except when we tried to clean it up a bit. We called the vet and they gave us some instructions until we can bring her in, in the morning. I’ve given her some gabapentin and she has a cone on. I’m not even sure what I’m looking at here. What would the protocol for this typically look like? Female, 12 years old, springer spaniel/lab mix subm”
“Hi everyone! My pup’s paws develop sores after days at the park. She usually licks all night afterwards and develops these scabs, which cause her to limp for another day or two. She is okay with me rinsing it with water and when it gets bad wrapping it for a while with vet tape so that she doesn’t continue licking. Her paws usually get swollen and very warm through this. Does she have sensitive paws to running around? Could it be allergies? Is there anything I can do to help and also prevent it”
“I have a 6 year old french bulldog, he weighs 17kg and isnt neutered. For around a year now his paws have been getting red and bleeding, to the point that this paw pads have grown into one another. We’ve been to the vet and gotten him tested for allergies, and removed any possible causes from his diet, and anti allergy medication but it hasnt helped. We suspected that he might have developed a habit of licking his paws due to the allergies, and because the paws also itch now, he cant stop. We us”
“My dog broke/ripped half her toe nail off. I took her to a pet urgent care and they looked at it. Said I had two options. 1. They sedate and remove the rest, send home with cone of shame and pain meds. Or 2, we keep cleaning and dressing the wound at home and give pain meds/cone. We opted for option 2. Was that a bad choice? They said it will be a little tender longer and any excess nail could snag. Will this just take a bit longer to heal and she’ll be fine or should I go back and have them sed”
“My 82 lb, 6 yo, neutered male, staffordshire mix dog has ripped his claw open and it’s bleeding lightly. He won’t stop licking it. Not sure when it happened, we just noticed it. Is this an emergency? Or can it wait until morning? United States. There is an emergency vet about an hour away, so it is possible if necessary. United States. We have pet insurance that covers illness and injury 80%. submitted by /u/MamaMoosicorn [link] [comments]”
“Beginning yesterday, my dog’s two front paw pads look that they’ve become raw/irritated and seem to be peeling. Over night it’s gotten a little worse and he is now limping on one of them. Are there any at home remedies for this or should I take him to the vet? Species: Dog Age: 3.5 yrs Sex/Neuter: Neutered Breed: American Pitbull/ Staffy Mix Body Weight: 70 lbs History: This has happened twice previously but has remedied itself within the day Clinical Signs: Paw redness, slight limp Duration: 1”
“Hello all. Our 7 year old BMD started a slight limp a few days ago. Upon closer inspection, I can see she has swollen pad. I can't seem to find a splinter or anything stuck between her toes, so I'm not sure what caused this. Maybe some sort of infection? We plan to take her to the vet when they open on Monday. In the mean time, we're cleaning it and applying a cream called Animax. We used to use Animax for our other dog that would get allergies and lick his paws. Any thoughts or reco”
“First time pitbull mama. He’s 70lbs, not neutered, never had this happen before. We had a malinois and she had very rough paws but our big boy has soft paws. He went out to play today about 7:30 for a few mins (grass and rocky dirt) and came back in with his paws bleeding and the pads literally dangling. Is this normal? He doesn’t act like they hurt but I’m worried about my big baby. What would yall suggest? submitted by /u/Round-Chicken-9945 [link] [comments]”
