“These black stains started appearing on these cheap plastic shelves on their own. And they have weird blooming patterns. How do I prevent this?”
“I live in a 1960's building that wasn't cleaned for 3 years. The bottoms of the kitchen cabinets are nasty but I have back pain and can't bend and twist to properly see what I'm doing without hurting myself further. Would love to get some tips!”
“Any ideas for getting what looks to be oil or chemical running down the backsplash of a kitchen I purchased last year. Didn’t see this and I’m wondering if from an air fryer/toaster or something along those lines.”
Several users are struggling to remove ingrained black soot from their kitchen cabinet surfaces, likely left by previous owners. They suspect a past fire and seek advice on cleaning products that won't damage the MDF material of the cabinets.

“Hello, I am trying to take care of my silverware. That was in a house fire. When I started with them, they were covered in soot and black. With some of them showing the coppery and grey tarnish. I have gotten them to this point where they're fairly clean, but some of them still have some tarnish or blackened spots. Any advice at cleaning them more or maintainign them now would be helpfull. They were my great great grandmothers so i am trying to save them as best I can. submitted by ”

“Yes! OP may have used shellac-based Kilz but I tend to assume when people mention it that they bought the water-based crap from HD. I do a thorough cleaning with Savogran Dirtex(doesn't need to be removed like TSP) first. I'll do a second cleaning with Dirtex if it's really bad, especially on flat paint like ceilings because they're harder to clean. Then a coat of shellac primer, again 2x if it's really bad. Make sure you allow proper drying between cleanings and coats. You&#”
“Hello! I got this gorgeous hand painted cabinet from goodwill. I believe it is heavily stained with cigarette smoke. I don’t know it’s history since I just picked it up. I am hoping for a way to clean off the stains while preserving the hand paint. It is so beautiful and clearly was a labor of love. I am happy to touch it up if need be, but would love to try to maintain it as much as possible. I used a magic eraser sponge and was able to get some of the stain off, but it started chipping at the”
“Coming out of some PPD and trying to reclaim my kitchen. I’ve got the stove pretty clean but this is several months of cooked on gunk. I’ve tried goo gone, crud cutter, and even some basic baking soda and vinegar, but nothing really seems to be doing it. Any products or tips? submitted by /u/ElderLychen [link] [comments]”

“A few of these 2x4 beams have a not uniform black coating that is shiny. It has no odor and is clean to the touch. In o e pic, it looks like there is some drip of some kind. No mold. No flaking or evidence of wood having burned, and it is also localized, meaning not throughout the area (above the garage) Has anyone ever seen this? Any insight into what this could be? Thanks! submitted by /u/Covfefe45killls [link] [comments]”

“Wood ash is alkaline, but house fires also emit a TON of plastic ash which of course is petroleum based. It's very nasty stuff, I'm assuming your gonna need something like you mentioned, a solvent based cleaner.”
“My kitchen cabinets are dark wood, and every drop of food / liquid shows on them. Whenever I scrub them with floor cleaner / soap the stains go away until it dries but re appear after 5 minutes. Is there something I can use without damaging the wood? submitted by /u/Due_Use_2496 [link] [comments]”
