“Hey all - I’m realizing I’ve got a grub issue in a few areas. Lawn was aerated and overseeded about 2 weeks ago. Is now an appropriate time to put down grub killer, and then grub ex in the spring? Or should I just wait until spring? Should I apply to the whole lawn or just the…”
Several users are frustrated because they cannot visibly identify grub infestations in their lawns, despite preventative measures or experiencing significant damage. Some suspect heavy rains washed away preventative treatments.

“Looks like grubs [re: Lawn went from good to bad in 6 months even with care, don’t know why]”
“Any idea of the reason for this? Dead/dormant patches are like this since a couple of years. There was a heavy infestation of black beetle a year ago that was addressed during autumn/winter. [edit] The good bits are soft, thick, and grow quickly, requiring a trim every 4-5 days to keep it tidy. submitted by /u/aqvatico [link] [comments]”
“Sure, but timing treating of grubs matters. In most climates, for prevention you want to treat a few weeks before egg laying - usually early June, give or take. That's in contrast to killing active colonies, which can be done at any time. Just make sure you know what type of product you're buying. For example: applying Grub-x in October is pouring money down the drain - it's a preventative meant to be applied around June 1. You can read more: https://www.homesandgardens.com/gardens/w”
“I treated an extra year for grubs after I was confident they were dead just because I didn’t want a stray getting any ideas. Little bastards will take your hard work by the roots and devastate it. [re: Lawn went from good to bad in 6 months even with care, don’t know why]”
“U forgot to put down preventer this year and ended up with an infestation. I tried this product and it did fuck all for me. [re: Grub Control For California]”
“Our guy has treated for the grubs after I pointed these holes out. [re: Connecticut - 4 month old sod - aeration and over seeding]”

“I'm in Michigan and am experiencing the same. Thought it was squirrels but it's skunks digging for grubs. I just put 24hr grub killer on it [re: [michigan]Lots of holes on lawn from squirrels digging]”
“Squirrels aren’t to blame, OP has grubs. The squirrels are just looking for food. You could scare the off or kill them, but the raccoons and crows and other animals will also tear up the lawn. Gotta kill the grubs [re: [michigan]Lots of holes on lawn from squirrels digging]”
“For future reference - How much did you water? How quickly did you catch the grub damage? [re: To who ever recommended excessive water vs ripping up grub damage…THANK YOU!]”
“Grubs aren't going to come up because of soapy water, you need to dig around and look for them. [re: Fungus]”
“I meant to say I mixed water and dawn to see if there were any chinch bugs or grubs this evening. [re: Fungus]”
“No, I didn’t. That’s my fault. I just mixed water and dawn together this evening to pour into the grass to see if there were any chinch bugs or grubs. [re: Fungus]”
“Overseeded with TCS Resilience II second week of September and had great germination but about 2 1/2 weeks in, turkeys came and destroyed my front lawn. Pretty sure they are finding grubs and should've laid grub killer. Did my first cut a few days ago, at least the backyard is looking great. is it worth trying to dormant seed? submitted by /u/astrob0y1 [link] [comments]”
“This section of my yard was plagued with grubs. Ended up putting down grub killer. Wasnt sure if I was going to rip up the damaged sections until saw someone comment to just “water the shit out of the damage sections and allow the roots to regrow.” This has saved my lawn (for the time-being). Hoping it survives the winter. I overseeded and put down some starter fert. and will follow up with winterizing towards end of fall. submitted by /u/fun4days365 [link] [comments]”

“Do you see a bunch of lawn moths ? Army worms. Have you seen alot of flying beetles, grubs, after watering do you see alot of ants? Ant nest”
“Now, definately . This summer during the 100 degree weather, and most of the summer, severe drought. Rainless summers last several years in berks county.”
“So, any thoughts on what could be causing this? I have it (decoratively) roped off, so it shouldn't be dogs.”
“What do you use to keep grubs away? Thank you 😎 submitted by /u/wine2018 [link] [comments]”
“Europe, Belgium; Last week I reseeded some large patches in my lawn that did not survive summer. It had grubs, and birds toar entire patches of dried grass off. It was treated for grubs and reseeded. All was going good and new grass is already growing (still thin so not clearly visible on the picture), until in came home yesterday and saw that birds have once again had a go at my lawn. Where do I go from here? Do it just leave it for now and hope that the remaining grass will pull through, or do”
“Acelepryn in early summer will solve that, the grubs eat the roots and the grass just peels back like carpet”

Or should I just wait until spring? Should I apply to the whole lawn or just the applicable spots? “Might be hard to see without zooming in. They were easy to see in person all wiggling around 😂 there are actually quite a few.”
“1yr old sod in zone 9b. I deal with dog urin spots. The grass usually dies and I’m often pulling the dead grass out by hand and waiting for fall to seed repair… today I pulled some dead grass up and had quite a few of these small grubs. Are these normal healthy soil signs or are these fixin on damaging my lawn? Thanks submitted by /u/Any_District1969 [link] [comments]”
“Grub Ex at the start of May by Aug when they hatch they eat the grass and die. Had this issue last year where my grass pull up like a rug.”
“I am located in SE Michigan and plan to overseed (I know it’s late). I was dethatching and getting the lawn ready for overseeding and pulled at a few pieces of turf that looked dry and it just came up so easily. I could have kept pulling for days, but had to stop at some point. I now have two HUGE bare spots I’ll seed. I am laying grub killer now as well. Why do grubs love my yard? Every year I deal with some grub damage. I put grub control down, but it doesn’t seem to help. Is there anything I”

“Where are you checking for grubs? Just make sure you’re looking on the edge of the brown patches because that’s where they’ll be if there are any.”
“Dylox. Too late for preventative options which need to be done early in the year. This stuff kills full grown grubs when watered in.”
“This happened to me. I put some anti grub granules down right before a heavy rain and boom thousands of beetle grubs still came up. Then I threw down grass seed and it took really well because of all of the holes. The next year my lawn was much better.”
“I’d definitely check what kind of grub you’re dealing with before treating the whole lawn. Timing matters a lot with grub control, so the right season can make a huge difference.”
“Hi all! New to gardening and was wondering if these grubs were normal or if I had a problem. I found quite a few while digging up my soil. I'm located in Southern California if that helps. Thank you! submitted by /u/_petros [link] [comments]”
“It's never too late to kill them. It's just better to prevent them. Be sure to treat for grubs next year....you'd be applying the treatment likely in April/May, so it can get into soil and be ready to kill when they hatch.”
“Is it to late to use grub killer? Product suggestions? Zone 5a submitted by /u/Far-Preparation5174 [link] [comments]”
“NY as well. I get the Bayer 24 hour killer from Lowes. They usually sell it. Grubex I get off ebay. There are ways especially online.”
“Apparently, you have to look at the hair pattern on their rear end to identify the species. People tend to assume they are japanese beetles but lots of beetles have grub forms. I haven't had the time to do any solid research on the different species rump hair patterns though so I just dont kill any of them so as not to risk killing natives.”
“So I decided to oversee yesterday with the temps dropping and the rain coming in the next week or so I figured it was the best option. I have I think mostly fescue, my neighbors have mostly weeds with some Bermuda. Anyway, my front yard recently turned very patchy, circular brown spots. I did spot treat a lot of it with glyphosate a few weeks ago because I believe the neighbors yard and the straw I used in spring brought in lots of weeds. Anyways, my wife and I spent the day raking out as much d”
“Hey! How is it going? Getting better? I am very frustrated with mine tbh. I can’t see any signs of recovery”
