“to combine with overseeding? if not, I dont see much harm. Not sure what the timing for seeding looks like though. [re: Dethatch and aerate in PNW now?]”
“The dethatcher basically scalped your lawn, that's grass crowns and roots in your hand not thatch. Overseeding was the right move but it might take a couple weeks to fill in those bare spots, keep watering and don't touch it for a month. The guy in the comments is right about…”
“Zone 7B Over labor day weekend, I over seeded my lawn with Stover New Millennium. Lawn was thin in spots, but really my goal was to clean up 2 dead/brown spots. I mowed low, manual dethatched, put down seed, starter fertilizer, and top dressed with leaf compost. Watered 3 times…”
Users who mistakenly used the 'sacrificer' setting on their dethatchers now require overseeding due to clumping grass. This is an unexpected consequence of improper equipment settings and necessitates additional work.

I mowed low, manual dethatched, put down seed, starter fertilizer, and top dressed with leaf compost. Watered 3 times a day for 15 mins. One of the 2 spots grew back great, the other seems like the seed barley germinated and instead just got overwhelmed weeds. I think its Oxalis. I've had small patches of this stuff before and I trie”
“In Southern Ontario, I just finished ripping up the half of my back lawn and dethatching the other half. Laid down lawn soil over dethatched area, reseeded entire lawn and watered last night. Hopefully it will have time to germinate. I had a lot of vine like weed covering the back half of the yard. I started of detatching, and decided to just rototiller the back half and rake out all the roots etc. submitted by /u/TriMan66 [link] [comments]”
“If you have a combo, do drop around the edges mulch beds, etc to keep the seed on the lawn, and then rotary in the large open areas for more reliable coverage.”
“So I got a new dethatcher and, being completely honest, I had no idea what I was doing. 😭 I was messing around with the little adjustment wheels and turning them because I assumed I was just changing the height. I did but I didn’t realize I had changed it, I didn’t really realize how much of a difference it was actually making. I ended up going over a pretty large section of my lawn and stripped out A LOT of grass. At the time I didn’t think much of it, but later I actually looked at what I had”
“Eastern WA state here. I'm trying to eliminate some fairly thick moss that has accumulated/spread over a few years. The plan is to mow short, apply moss treatment, then dethatch and overseed and fertilize. I applied granular Moss Out 10 days ago and watered it in appropriately. It didn't completely kill it, as much of the moss is still brown with some green tips. I am going to apply a 2nd treatment of iron. Should I just apply it and let it do it's thing OR is it worth it to dethatch”
“Yea maybe you thatched it by hand, but a power dethatcher+scarifier (you can get a cheap one on amazon 60-80 bucks, I did and worked well) will clear that dead grass.”
“I dethatched (with the spring tins, not scarified), then aerated, over-seeded, top soiled + tenacity about 2 weeks ago. The seeds are germinating well over some areas but I have a few areas where I was hoping the old grass would come back but I think it’s just dead and the new seed isn’t filling in as well. There is some germination over the dead grass but I’m wondering if all the old grass root mass is inhibiting new growth. Should I rake out these sections and reseed? Or give it more time to e”
“New to lawn care living in Central Washington want to do dethatch before winter. As you can see it has a lot of weeds Was planning on pouring some 2,4 d but was told to wait since it will dry out More stuff I want to do: Detach Overseed Level Aerate. What order should I follow? submitted by /u/White96sands [link] [comments]”
“My front lawn is in terrible shape as you can see. I’m pretty over my head. The lawn gets a mix of sun and shade. I’m in zone 4b. My plan is to do this next week: 1. Dethatch and rake up debris 2. Aerate 3. Overseed with KBG and perennial ryegrass 4. Water for 3 weeks 4 times a day for 10 minutes Questions: -am I missing anything? -any place where I can really mess this up (I’d assume no the lawn can’t get much worse) -do I need to put down fertilizer or top soil? If yes what kind? submitt”
“As you can tell I am a novice, my neighbor saw me breaking my back with thatch rake, she offered my her thatch rake. It had sacrificer blade which I didn’t know at the time. Front lawn was pretty bad so I thought it was normal. When I raked it, it seems like lot and lot of land is bare now. I am kinda worried. I do have top soil and seed and this is apparently the perfect time in PNW, but I am also scared as well. Please guide me Location: PNW submitted by /u/After_Step_8595 [link] &”
