Homeowners are struggling to remove persistent patches of dead grass from their lawns, despite attempts at aeration, overseeding, and dethatching. They’re unsure if the grass is a specific type (TTTF) or what steps to take after flooding.

“I use the Sun Joe. It's worked well for me. But some caveats: Like others have said, you may not really have a thatch problem. Depends what grass you have and how it's maintained. In my case, what I've been dealing with is that the original lawn was seeded with a blend of perennial rye, annual rye, and fescue. For better or worse, really only the fescue thrives in my climate. Annual rye doesn't reseed of course (doesn't get long enough to), but the perennial also doesn't”

Sweeper or just use a bag on the mower when you cut short right after

“I was someone who would dethatch my lawn every 1-2 years, depending on how often it was needed. This year, I decided to just use my BR 350 blower and take my time walking in straight lines covering all areas. Now, Im sold. In my opinion, a good backpack blower is easier on the back, especially due to not pushing a machine with resistance, than a dethatching power tool with better results. Personally, I think the cleanup is easier and the results are better with less healthy grass coming out. Jus”

“UK based, as the title suggests whilst I was away my Fiancé tried her best to help my grass... by using weedkiller on the weeds. Will this all the dead spots bounce back, or will I need to resend all these spots? submitted by /u/thefaded69 [link] [comments]”

“If dethatching isn't helpful, What's all the dead brown grassy stuff that the detacher pulls up?”

“Nothing here is thatch? Thatch is thick dead grass molded together, like cardboard. Pick it up in plate size chunks”

“As someone who’s life is this industry and has been for nearly 3 decades, in both cool and warm season climates….here’s my thoughts to your title and reading a few sentences of your post. Dethatching in zone 7a - in 7a both cool and warm season grasses grow equally poorly. The chance of having too much thatch in a home lawn is pretty much nill. Fine-ish fescue lawn in 7a? Hmm. Maybe in an arid climate. I say that but I could take you back to where I was born and raised and show everyone that fin”

“I’m gonna guess 95% of people with cool season lawn that think they’re looking at thatch are actually just looking at dormant/dead grass. It’s extremely rare to need to dethatch a cool season lawn. Just aerate and seed. Or if you have some patchy areas, just throw down some seed and use a garden cultivator to mix it in. It’ll grow in fine.”

Rake it up or mow over top of it. either way works fine.

“You don't have thatch, unless you have warm season grass or KBG after many years. If you see a bunch of dead grass, that's not thatch and a tine whipping dethatcher is going to rip up so much good grass. Aeration would help break up any dead grass areas, and also provide the benefit of aeration.”

“Well that looks like it worked great, but I wasnt really planning to do a complete renovation. Haha. Do you think raising it would work better for combing out moss? Or the dethatcher head instead of the scarifier? My yard is mostly tall fescue. The pic attached is just the worst section of moss.”

“The scarifier is like a little sideways auger. It will dig up more than moss. I just used mine after I nuked my yard to "fluff" up my dirt before seeding. IT WORKED. This is first pass. I did #2 setting. There are 4 settings. https://preview.redd.it/9jxnddc4bslh1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f40fb17723b59c74e9fbe9b431a762696f5a1c01”

“Can I mown to 2” and use the sunjoe to rake up the dead grass? Or do I have to manually rake? The section is about 2500 sqft.”

“New homeowner, Illinois, I looked up online and saw that KBG was common over here so I’m assuming that’s what I have. It looks good from this angle but is it possible to make my lines darker/thicker? Am I cutting too short? Whats a good rule of thumb to start off with taking care of your lawn. Thank you to anyone who answers. submitted by /u/unborngoliath [link] [comments]”

“I am planning to core aerate, top dress, and oversseding my back yard after a brutal summer. I dethatched last year using the electric SunJoe dethatcher. Can I use the Sunjoe dethatcher again this year to get rid of the dead grass? I read that you should not dethatch 2 years in a row but there are a lot of dead grass and I can pull them up without any resistance. I am in zone 6B with hard clay. There is no grub. “I am in a part of Indiana that received record flooding. Fortunately for me we had no issues or damage at our house but I have over 1/2 acre of my 5 acre yard that is still under water since last Thursday (7 days total so far). My assumption is this grass will be completely dead, but never experienced this before. The lawn is TTTF. I have several small trees in this area, Tulip and oak species, that are 4 feet tall or less, 1-3 year old range. The leaves on the Tulips are already turning brown s”
