Users are upset that MyFitnessPal now requires a paid subscription to use the barcode scanner, which was previously free. Users find this change ridiculous and have deleted the app as a result.

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.41.0) — I used this app many years ago and everything was free. Now it requires a paid subscription for the common features that were free.”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.40.0) — $80 to get bar code scanning. Clearly you have realized no one uses any of the bloatware that’s been included besides the scanner so you hid it behind a pay wall. I’m happy to pay for it and I have but $80 is scandalous. Should I be waiting until you put typing behind a pay wall too?”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.40.0) — It won’t let you do anything accurately without paying for a premium version. Everything I search has incorrect values on at least one of the three- protein, fat, or carbs.”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★★ 2/5 (v26.40.0) — Scanning barcodes should be free not just paid.”

APP STORE8d ago

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.40.0) — Don’t waste your time. You can’t even scan a barcode of food into your tracker without paying $$. Completely ridiculous. I used this app for over 5 years in the past and all of the features that make it great were free. I re-downloaded it after not using it for maybe 8years and every single part of the app cost money now. Everything that was previously free (& therefore not costing them anything because it already exists) and genuinely helpful now cost money. Pi”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.40.0) — Should not be charged to use barcode scanner”

APP STORE12d ago

“[MyFitnessPal] ★★★ 3/5 (v26.39.0) — It’s a good app, but it’s not cheap. It’s not expensive and since I’m a college it’s really not feasible. I wish it was a cheaper price point.”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★★ 2/5 (v26.39.0) — i’ve decided not to continue with MyFitnessPal due to the advertising and lack of features”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★★★ 3/5 (v26.39.0) — Very frustrated. Steps do not sync from Fitbit or Apple health app. I spent the $80 on premium and when I log in online a computer it doesn’t register that I have premium. Yes I am using the correct log ins. Yes I closed and reopened the apps, unlinked and relinked the apps/devices. Support says the issue is with Google and Apple. I say if I have issues with multiple platforms talking to MFP, it’s MFP.”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★★★ 3/5 (v26.39.0) — Barcode scan should be free otherwise it turns people off!!!”

APP STORE17d ago

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.39.0) — The bar code scanning aspect is non-functional. I reported it. They wrote back with a list of things I need to do. Nope. Will not be renewing.”

APP STORE17d ago

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.38.0) — I used to use this app frequently years ago. Now they charge for everything that used to be free. I am looking for a better alternative.”

APP STORE21d ago

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.38.0) — Many other food tracking apps have free barcode scanning, but this one does not. It also only lets you set macronutrient goals in strange increments like 68g or 90g, and my goal is 80g-dumb if you ask me.”

APP STORE21d ago

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.38.0) — The app is fine. What’s not fine is that barcode scanning is a paid feature now when users like me literally used it to build your database. We scanned food item barcodes that weren’t added. Added them ourselves. For probably dozens and dozens on items. All to have you then take away barcode scanning as a free feature. I’ve never forgotten and this can never be forgiven. Only made right.”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★★★ 3/5 (v26.38.0) — I have been an avid user of this app for the past couple of years. I will say the interface is easy to use, but within the last few months there have been features that were originally free now hidden behind a paywall. this is absolutely ridiculous that I cannot set my own macro goals and that they HAVE to be on a set amount. I understand that some features need to be paid for, but this is just made me not want to use the app. Absolutely ridiculous.”

APP STORE26d ago

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.38.0) — Look, I don’t review often. I have been tracking my food with my fitness pal for over 8 years. When they put food scanning behind the paywall, I knew it wasn’t going to end well. The interface layouts keep getting worse, features are buggy, food will randomly not track, and now my custom meals just don’t work and I waste so much time. It would actually be easier to track my food on a piece of paper and add it on a calculator. Fix your app guys.”

APP STORE26d ago

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.38.0) — This was thee go to app for logging food and exercise but it sucks now. They charge for everything even to use the barcode scanner and often the food I want to log doesn’t exist or the information is incorrect. Also logging exercise is near impossible, they have close to know activities to log. Can’t log standing abs or regular yoga even. So done with you!”

APP STORE26d ago

“[MyFitnessPal] ★★ 2/5 (v26.37.0) — I used to use this app all the time a few years ago. Now they make scanning your meals cost money. I hate how apps make simple things cost money especially when it wasn’t always like that. Hopefully there is another meal app that’s allows for free barcode scans for meals.”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★★★ 3/5 (v26.37.0) — I paid extra for barcodes and it is often inaccurate!”

APP STORESep 18

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.36.0) — I absolutely do not understand why this is the most popular calorie counting app. You can barely do anything besides add up your daily calories unless you pay $20 a month. Protein? Nah. Barcode scanner? Nah. Anyway I highly recommend MyNetDiary!!! Much better and way more features for free.”

APP STORESep 14

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.36.0) — Apparently you have to pay to use features like scanning the barcode now. It didn’t used to be like that. CEO should be ashamed of how disgusting and greedy they are.”

APP STORESep 11

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.35.0) — I signed up for the premium account. Each time I try to use the barcode scanner, it tells me I need to upgrade to premium. When I click on “okay” it tells me I’m already subscribed…. Endless loop. Complete ripoff.”

APP STORESep 8

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.35.0) — I’ve used MyFitnessPal for years and it is a great nutrition tracker. But every time I update it they take away a feature that used to be free… And $20 a month is a steep price for an app! I’ll be going elsewhere for my nutrition help”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★★ 2/5 (v26.35.0) — I really did enjoy this app I’ve had it for 2 years and now I gotta pay to use the barcode 🫩 yall were quick and easy and now u want my money 🥲”

APP STORESep 3

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.35.0) — Super frustrated. I got the paid version and most of the functions don’t work. The scan barcode takes forever, you can’t upload recipes from pictures only specific websites, and the meal pictures are extremely inaccurate. Also infuriating that you cannot edit recipes or even see what’s in them once they are created. I wish there were a better alternative because this app is so not user friendly. For something that’s been around for so long, you would think it wo”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★★ 2/5 (v26.34.0) — MFP 26.34.0 iOS 26.6.1 on iPhone 17 Pro Max. All was fine yesterday, 8/29. Logged in 8/30 and it’s asking me to Go Premium to use related features, including barcode scan. I have a subscription via App Store through April 2027. Login with Apple. Inconvenient glitch.”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.34.0) — you’d think paying 80 dollars a year for an app to track your calories would be able to track that your subscription is still viable instead of logging me out of the subscription every hour and having to delete and reinstall the app just to possibly be able to login in my premium subscription. will not be revisiting after my year is up”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.34.0) — Too many features behind a paywall, app is barely usable now.”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.34.0) — Try something else. MyFitnessPal only works if you buy Premium. So, now useless.”

APP STOREAug 27

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.34.0) — This was amazing in the beginning. You could use the basic features without paying for anything and didn’t have ads everywhere. Now, full of trash and you have to pay to even scan a barcode? Really disappointing.”

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.33.0) — I had this app in 2025 and it was perfect. Super easy to use. I come back and you now have to pay 80 bucks a year to scan the barcode on food?? No wonder everyone stays fat. We aren’t all made of money out here. This is BS”

APP STOREAug 25

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.33.0) — So one of the most time saving features bar code scan is now only available if we pay? Instead of adding something new, you took something away so you could monetize it? I’m disgusted.”

APP STOREAug 24

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.33.0) — I use this app because it offered the most for what you get now you have to pay a premium which you didn’t have to before just to use a barcode scanner I’ll be spreading the word via instagram and face book about this issue I’m sick and tired of being nickeled and dime for every little thing I won’t stand for my health to go through the same thing”

APP STOREAug 24

“[MyFitnessPal] ★★★ 3/5 (v26.33.0) — Long time user. Great for tracking, the paid version is great for scanning barcodes BUT STOP CHANGING THE INTERFACE EVERY OTHER MONTH. I finally get used to it and then things change and I’m adding things to the wrong day or trying to find a feature that was one tap away now it’s 3 taps away. FFS don’t fix what is not broken.”

APP STOREAug 21

“[MyFitnessPal] ★★★ 3/5 (v26.33.0) — Love the app, absolutely hate the new update. I’m not paying $20 a month or $80 a year just to scan barcodes, the free version works incredibly and has helped me understand how to track my calories so I love the app. If they keep making changes I might need to find a new app though.”

APP STOREAug 21

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.33.0) — I used to love this app. Came back to it after a year and have found features that used to be free are now a monthly fee (scanning barcodes). So now I no longer feel the need to only use this app. I’ll be shopping around if I have to pay. Screw you guys for the change up”

APP STOREAug 20

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.32.0) — They took away all options besides hand typing in each item… there’s plenty of other apps that do it for free. Adios MtFitnessPal, it was a good run”

APP STOREAug 16

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.32.0) — I’ve used this app since 2013 when there was no paid subscription, after under armor purchased it they made it so some features like the barcode scanner cost extra to use and now they have annoying pop up ads added as well, there’s a lot of other apps out there that don’t charge for features as well so I recommend anyone looking to download a app to use then search fir a better option as this app is now near the bottom for user friendliness and ease of access.”

APP STOREAug 15

“[MyFitnessPal] ★ 1/5 (v26.32.0) — This is ridiculous. I got so excited to start tracking my macros again, and I never expected an app like this to charge for something as basic as a barcode scanner—especially when that feature is free in most other fitness apps. I deleted the app immediately after seeing that I had to pay for a Premium subscription JUST TO USE THE BARCODE SCANNER. Seriously? Charging a monthly subscription for a basic feature that should be standard is ridiculous. It’s honestl”

APP STOREAug 14

“[MyFitnessPal] ★★★ 3/5 (v26.32.0) — I am re-implementing MyFitnessPal. My screen does not correlate with instructions to add/edit steps, barcodes, activities. Help needed! Chat is inaccurate and not helpful.”
