Developers building Shopify stores are encountering limitations and workarounds when trying to implement specific functionality. This includes difficulties with bulk data editing, complex pricing structures, custom forms, and extending core features to meet unique business needs. The platform's constraints often require significant custom development and creative solutions.

“We have a 'headless' webshop, which allows us to use the shopify backend + checkout etc., whilst still being able to fully customize the frontend. Maybe that's a option for you? [re: Shopify or self-hosted for experienced dev getting into ecommerce field]”

I would choose an app based on the following: The specific problem you need to solve Whether Shopify already has a built-in solution Pricing based on your current order volume The features you actually need The app's ease of use I advise against installing an app just because it's popular. Don't build the storefront around the exceptions. Keep Shopify as the payment and order record, but give made-to-order kits explicit states like brief received, design approved, deposit paid, and shipped; that prevents…
“I do a lot of Shopify theme work, and honestly the app matters less than how you style it. Since you're fine with custom CSS, you can get Judgeme's free plan to look like anything. The paywall is on the settings panel, not on the markup. What works: inspect the widget in dev tools, note the class names (they're stable across updates), and put your overrides in a dedicated CSS file loaded in your theme, or in the theme's custom CSS field. For star icons, hide their icon font glyph”
“Shopify partner dev stores are the cleanest sandbox, and that's already been covered. SureCart and FluentCart are the easier case though: they're WordPress plugins, so you don't need real products or a live domain. LocalWP (or a wordpress docker image), install the plugin, drop in Stripe test keys, make two dummy products with one set of variants, run a test checkout, then refund it. That loop is the actual skill. Clicking around an empty dashboard isn't. [re: Ecommerce sandboxes”
“Yes. One product, two boxes. Easy? Tell me how I tell Shopify one product ships in two boxes please? [re: Why Make It Look Worse?]”
“I’d focus on making the cart and product pages feel more on brand, then keep checkout clean and simple. shopify limits how much you can customize checkout on non plus plans, so I wouldn’t spend money chasing workarounds that might not even be worth it, you can still customize things like your logo, colors, and fonts and a smooth checkout experience is probably more important than making it look fancy [re: Shopify Checkout Customization]”
“I build Shopify stores for a living, and you can get further on non-Plus than most people think. You just can't change the layout. Go to Settings > Checkout > Customize. In that editor you can upload your logo, set background colours or an image for the main and order summary panels, choose your brand fonts, button colours, corner radius and form field style. Most "boring" checkouts are just the default black and white with no logo and a font that doesn't match the store.”
“You can't. That's the point of a consistent checkout across millions of websites on non plus plans [re: Shopify Checkout Customization]”
“What's the best way to customize checkout page in shopify non-Plus plans, that doesn't look like a shitty design? I am building a brand, but the checkout page seems too boring and I can't afford two grand a month. Do you have any workaround to make the checkout page attractive other than paying for Plus? submitted by /u/Interesting_Map_7039 [link] [comments]”

“Navigating order line-item edits and partial refunds inside Shopify requires using the edit order function or issuing a partial line-item refund instead of canceling the full order. You can open the affected order in your Shopify admin, click edit order, remove the single out-of-stock item, and save the order to issue a partial refund or adjustment directly to the original payment method. Setting your payment authorization to manual capture allows you to edit order line items before capturing pa”
“No problem for me. But I don't know if Shopify will do this. But yes, there are "companies" who launch 12 apps per week, it doesn't make sense. [re: Shopify should charge a monthly fee for listing and app]”

“Shopify's whole shipping logic is so painfully basic. Can't even set a shipping service based on things like tags or product types/collections which is a PITA. [re: Shipping time only uses business days]”
“Agreed but there are a ton of free and cheap plugins that also fill many voids [re: What I learned building a storefront for sellers who are "too small" for Shopify]”
“That's not good, and shopify sucks for that. Shopify typically uses the product description from inside the product page, you can also have your own description on the website from your theme typically. I would seperate the two so shop app doesn't summarise that wrong. [re: Caution: Shop AI hallucinations are not Shopify’s Problem.]”

“Supplier spreadsheet pricing tools for small retailers — one-time purchases, no subscription. ShelfDiff ($29): Match a supplier’s intended selling prices to a Shopify product export by exact SKU, review each change, then download a CSV for manual import. Useful when supplier files and your store export have different row orders. MarginDraft ($19): Turn a supplier cost or retail-price spreadsheet into proposed selling prices using your margin, markup or discount rule. Review and export approved S”
“Hello, I have been working in a ecommerce small business, with our store hosted by Shopify, for years now. We sell products/goods and have a few services for customizations with these products. My boss has the option for customers on our store to add a tip at checkout. However, despite the fact that some customers let us know that the tips are for our hard working employees, my boss will not give us any of the tips claiming they are for the business operations, not us. This seems very illegal gi”
“Line item properties do this. Add a select input in the product form named properties[Edge] with White border / No border as values. Native Shopify feature, no app, no extra variant.”
“I have a Shopify product where the customer can choose different sizes (A5, A4, A3, A2), and these are currently set up as Shopify variants. I also want to give the customer another option: Edge: White border No border I don't want to create additional variants for this, because that would multiply the number of variants (e.g. A5 + White border, A5 + No border, A4 + White border, A4 + No border, etc.). Instead, I want "Edge" to be a separate product option that is saved with the or”
“it does't get everything at the very first time. i've given him detailed precise prompts for section designs from padding, margin, font styling, animation, and what else you can think off. but still it hallucinates.”
“I would call myself a novice with navigating and using Shopify. I'm in the process of trying to just tighten up my over all storefront, and I've hit a wall with one particular issue. Right now I am using a Product Grid to list all my items for sale. By default, it's listing everything by Alphabetical order. I don't want that. I want it to populate newest first. I tried going and organizing the relevant collection, both by the newest to oldest filter and then manually. But it seem”
“Curious how other Shopify / DTC brands handle this. We use a 3PL. Invoice comes in weekly with a wall of codes — pick/pack, extras, storage, receiving, returns, materials, “accessorials.” Order volume barely moved one month and the bill jumped. Spot-checking a few lines never caught much. When we finally reconciled against the rate card + order export, we found stuff like: Storage billed on peak inventory, not average DIM / weight wrong vs what shipped Minimums applied when volume should’ve waiv”
“Yes OP exactly. If you explain what you want it will even ask you if you want it to build a section. It knows how to practically execute whatever you’re asking for as long as you are prompting properly. I did 90% of my store from the Claude desktop app using the shopify CLI and API. Have you got Claude or whichever LLM you’re using to set those up? It will walk you through it. BTW you need to use Claude Code or Codex vs cowork or chat”
Throw your theme in Claude and ask it to build your section.
“Yeah i’ve seen standaard shopify method but the edges look horrible… the problem with wordpress is that png was not reccomended, so we used .webp for all the images. Which helped a ton with site speed. You think it will be worth to just remake all the images in png format? Cause it will make the product images way better quality aswell i think. You reckon its worth it?”
“I’m looking into setting up a multi-vendor setup and trying to figure out which apps are actually practical once you have multiple sellers, products, orders, and payouts to manage. I’m especially interested in how well they handle things like vendor onboarding, commission tracking, order management, and keeping the catalog organized. Would love to hear what you’re using and what you’ve liked or hated about it so far. submitted by /u/hannahb_23 [link] [comments]”
“Hi all. Trying to create an "early access" moment and having trouble finding an app or solution. Essentially I would like for products to stay published and purchasable, and display only on one collection page reached by a link, never in search, other collections, or recommendations. I know I can unlist the products but unlisted products will not populate in a collection. Any help is appreciated. submitted by /u/hereforthesecondtime [link] [comments]”
“My first prompt when starting was how to make Shopify store lol. Basically ask Claude Code (im using the desktop app) to connect the shopify CLI and API. I also gave it access to my chrome too so that if there’s anything it says it needs me to do myself it can click through there when the Claude browser inevitably fucks up. Also set up a GitHub repo with staging and live braches so you can push changes from your testing site to the main site without manually switching and replacing the published”
“The closest thing to what you're describing is Shopify Editions (editions.shopify.com) — they drop major feature batches twice a year with proper showcases, which is probably the overview you want. Beyond that, there are a bunch of Shopify YouTube channels, and also some podcasts you could check out: The Unofficial Shopify Podcast eCommerce Fastlane The Shopify Solutions Podcast Shopify 1 Percent Hope that helps!”
“Assuming you mean select multiple products from product screen, click bulk edit, then add the correct columns? I never had that option. Always wanted it but could never do it that way. And doing it through inventory is frustrating. Doing it through a specific product is very limiting.”
“Specifically for Shopify themes - are you implementing every update? I usually read the press release to decide but always end up updating. What’s your frequency? submitted by /u/chiccychat911 [link] [comments]”

“We launched on the Shopify App Store in December. Eight months in. Here's what surprised me. 1. Review velocity matters more than star count in the first 90 days Everyone says get 5-star reviews. What actually matters is getting them fast. Shopify's algorithm weights recent review velocity when deciding where to show you in category pages. Five reviews in week one beats thirty reviews over four months for early ranking. We didn't understand this until month three, which cost us. 2. T”

“You can have multiple stores under one plus account if I am not mistaken. I remember 9 extension stores… but why not use markets with dedicated domain for each market?”
“They will, Shopify has a very different url structure and they all need redirected with 301 redirected ok for plus then you need Orbe. And some sort of translation platform that works with multi markets. Is it one domain or many?”
“I don't think people are allowed to reply with links or names. I think you can search the Shopify app store like you already did, make sure you test some with good reviews and a free trial period (or completely free). The high and low tax rates works in Shopify with collections, not ideal.”
“Hey, My company is considering migrating from our complex Commercetools + Adyen setup to Shopify + Shopify Payments. We plan to keep our existing front end and swap out the Commercetools cart with Shopify’s cart via the Storefront API, letting them handle and host checkout to reduce complexity. Our site sells in 14 different countries, everything from the US and Canada, to Sweden and most of Europe, to South Korea and other asian countries. We need a multi-market/multi-currency solution ofc. Eac”
“Nice. The theme part is the fun bit. I kept running into the boring stuff around it, products, checkout, orders, etc. I ended up using Orderain for that side, and Buddy lets me tweak things by chat. Curious how you’re handling the non-theme bits.”
“you are free to create a search bar app and sell it on the Shopify app store. but I personally think Shopify's free Search and Discover app is great. better than a lot of sites' search bars I have used. are yo referring to Search and Discover?”
“It basically made a report downloading process that I could use a basic screen macro to do half of into a 20-30 min project because I can't just open 40 tabs it all opens in the side window that I DONT NEED.”
“What subscription app are you using on Shopify, and do you actually like it? We started with Recharge years ago but moved away because they didn’t have a unified Shopify checkout at the time. I know that’s changed now, but their transaction fees are still higher than we’d like. We’ve also looked at Skio, but $500/month is more than we want to spend right now. Currently looking at Joy Subscriptions and a few others. Has anyone used Joy? Curious how your experience has been with the app, migration”
“Running a boutique on Shopify made me realize how useful bulk editing can be, but also how quickly it can go wrong. I used to think I could just select a bunch of products, change something, and move on. Then I started dealing with different sizes, colors, SKUs, and product naming that weren't always consistent across my catalog. The bulk editor wasn't really saving me time if I had to check every product first to make sure the changes actually made sense. Now I’ve learned to do my homew”
