Small online retailers are experiencing significant challenges navigating Shopify's intricacies, including tax setup, gift card migration, inconsistent shipping rates, and high shipping costs. Many are migrating from other platforms like WooCommerce, highlighting a desire for simpler solutions but encountering unexpected hurdles within Shopify's ecosystem. This complexity impacts their ability to efficiently manage their businesses and serve customers.

“Shopify Shipping (the discounted label buying) is rolled out country by country based on your store's address, not across the EU as a whole. Last I checked, only a handful of European countries had it, and Sweden wasn't one of them. Quick way to confirm:…”
“Is it added up per item, or is it the fee for all items after 1? Say if I set one item at $5, additional item at $2, a buyer buys three items, will it be $7 or $9? submitted by /u/Fit_Description_6046 [link] [comments]”
“Unfortunately no, that single number is all Shopify has. With your own UPS account on calculated rates, Shopify just stores the total UPS returned at checkout as the shipping line on the order (you'll see the same total in Analytics > Reports under the shipping/sales reports), it never gets the base/fuel/surcharge split. The itemized side only lives in UPS Billing Center, so what I'd do is pull a few of the bad orders' tracking numbers, line up each invoice against the shipping ch”

“I want to start selling to US again (from UK), but I am not sure how to set this up. I could not find a video showing step by step, nor how to test if I have set it up right. You can look at your shop as a buyer and see how UK pricing is working and what the customer sees, but how do you look at the US pricing? When you put price of item in Global Shipping do you just add 10% or do you include whole shipping DPPD cost? And how can you find out what the DPPD cost is going to be? As far as I can t”
“That makes sense. The free shipping banner is a good start, but customers spending under €50 might still be surprised by the delivery cost at checkout. One thing worth checking is where people actually drop off. Are they leaving when shipping costs appear or after reaching the payment step? If it is shipping, showing the estimated delivery cost in the cart could help. Also, have you checked whether the abandonment rate is different on mobile versus desktop? “I just use Shopify Ship. Same price I'm getting on Ebay, Shippo or PayPal shipping. I'm not in love with the $200 credit limit when it hits me out of nowhere but I am adjusting to it. Only been on Shopify for a few months but sales are increasing. [re: ShipStation alternatives for Shopify?]”
“Hey, has anybody using their own UPS account with Shopify’s UPS integration for calculated rates found that the customer is sometimes charged way less than UPS actually bills? For us it’s international only, and only some countries (Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia so far). Domestic and most other countries match the UPS invoice. On the bad ones the customer paid roughly 25-45% less than the UPS invoice total. Odd part: Shopify’s “Test UPS rates” tool shows the correct, higher price for the same pack”
“Before switching, I would export 20 or 30 recent shipments and quote those exact parcels in each alternative. Compare the final cost after dimensional weight, residential surcharges, insurance, returns and the monthly subscription, not just the advertised label discount. If your workflow is fairly simple, Shopify Shipping may already cover most of it without another subscription. The deciding factors are usually international documents, automation rules, multi location routing and how much manua”
“Been using ShipStation with our Shopify store and the fees are starting to add up. Looking for a solid alternative that still has good Shopify integration and actual discounted rates. “Hello guys! Im new to selling and retails. Right now im selling products for $15 flat. No sales tax added at the end. Im planning to just build in the sales tax in that $15 already. Is this ok? And on the filling day do I just add all gross sales and deduct the sales tax % amount? And thats what I file? Doing a quick google research and. I think im understanding it correctly. Ill just add all gross income, do a bulk “reverse-tax” and that number is what i’ll put on the nontaxable sales/deduction”
“Hi, I sell handmade knitwear, particularly baby clothes from Australia and my biggest market is the US. I am abit devastated as I am hearing about these new laws being introduced as of October 22. I set up my items in zonos and thought they were all ok but I’ve been told that as my items are baby clothes, they will need a certificate and to gain this they need to be lab tested. I am a small seller there is no way I can afford to do all of this and I have 8 outstanding US orders atm. I am so stre”
“I build Shopify stores for a living and this one comes up a lot. When it works for 1 unit but fails for 2, it's almost never weight. It's the package size. With carrier-calculated rates, Shopify has to decide what box the combined order ships in. If the product isn't set to ship in its own package, multiple units get packed into a box based on your package settings, and the resulting dimensions can blow past USPS limits (Ground Advantage and Priority Express both cap length plus girt”
“Before adding another app, check what Shopify Shipping itself gives you, since its built-in USPS, UPS and DHL rates are already discounted off retail and you can compare them per order on the label screen. If your store is on a higher plan, the discount tiers get better, so it's worth looking at Settings > Shipping and delivery to see which carriers are actually enabled. If you have your own negotiated carrier accounts, you can connect them there too and compare against Shopify's rate”
“Get a PO box. Note you can sometimes get them at ups or FedEx locations too. But you'd have to ask how that works. You probably want a second phone number too. Shopify requires both being available. (Because Google merchant center does, you're not getting around it.) [re: Return address]”

“Hi everyone! I'm a newly registered sole proprietor in the Philippines running an online clothing business through Shopify. I recently completed my DTI and BIR registration and elected the 8% income tax option. My business uses a print-on-demand model: Customers order and pay through Shopify. A third-party supplier manufactures and ships the clothing directly to customers. I don't maintain physical inventory or a warehouse. I pay the supplier for production and fulfillment. Most of my cu”
“We’re doing a few hundred orders a month and ShipStation’s pricing is starting to feel steep once you factor in everything. “Most Shopify shipping apps we’ve tried just print labels at regular rates or barely better. Looking for one that actually does real rate shopping across carriers instead of just being a label printer. Anyone have any suggestions? submitted by /u/mrCOFFEEPOWER [link] [comments]”
“Your rename workaround is honestly what a lot of UK stores end up doing, and you can make it a bit smarter natively. In Settings > Shipping and delivery, open the profile and add a second custom rate in the same zone, e.g. "DPD Next Day (Sat delivery on Friday orders)" with transit time set to none, so the name carries the promise instead of Shopify's business-day estimate. If you want the cutoff spelled out, put it in the rate name or the description area under shipping in chec”
“Yeah, the volume point is pretty much what we found too. We’ve used ship with mina on our side, and the rates made more sense once we looked at the overall shipping volume. [re: How to ship cheaper?]”
“If you are looking at some EU countries - keep in mind regulation and requirements for your store will change. For example - you need to be compliant with the new EU withdraw order / button rule which requires you to have a direct (no sign in) way for customers to withdraw their order. There are also some privacy changes - all of your current tags and pixels need to fire only after users click accept on your cookie banner. Before that everything needs to be blocked. There is also a new warranty”
“Agreed. In my world we call that the "Sales Prevention Dept"... Why bother, and then you have to figure your tax submissions from the top line, asking for calculation errors.”
“All shipments to USA must be sent duties pre-paid (DDP) as of last year so having a working HTS system is pretty critical if I want any customers from that country to be able to place an order, they do pay it but it needs to be calculated correctly or it'll come back to bite me on a billing adjustment.”
“The amount of people that complained they had to pay the VAT to pick up their order was astounding.”
“Two things worth checking while support digs in. First, country of origin: the duty calculation uses origin plus HS code, so a missing or wrong origin on some products (or on individual variants, since customs info lives at the variant level) can change the rate even when the code looks right. Second, check whether any of the affected items have a country-specific HS code set. US codes are 10 digits, and if only a 6-digit base code is stored, the calculator may pick its own 10-digit classificati”
“There isn’t really a universal ROAS number for break-even. It mostly comes down to your margins. For example, if you keep around 40% after COGS, shipping, payment fees, returns, etc., you’d need roughly 2.5x ROAS to break even on the first order. If your margin is 50%, it’s closer to 2x. I’d also separate first-order ROAS from LTV. A 2x ROAS might look bad if you need 2.5x to break even on the first purchase, but it can still make sense if those customers tend to come back and buy again. The big”
“We don't use the duty calculator. We raised our prices for the America market by the average duty rate and advertise an all inclusive price. Less transparency but less headache. That only works if all your products carry the same duty rate (or about).”
“Break-even ROAS is 1 divided by what's left of an order after product cost, shipping, payment fees and returns. On a $60 order with $18 product cost, $8 shipping, about $2 in fees and $3 in returns, about 48% is left, so break-even is roughly 2.1. Repeat purchases change the math a lot though. What ROAS do you need to break even, and do you count repeat orders when you decide if a campaign is working? submitted by /u/weareuncapped [link] [comments]”
“I’d try adding that line to the shipping email first and see if it cuts down on the “Where is my order?” questions before paying for another service.”
“If it's a pure country/market split, Shopify Markets lets one store handle per-market currency and language from a single catalog, so there's nothing to sync.”
“Shopify sent a corrected 2025 1099-K after I already filed. Would you consider switching platforms? I’m a small seller making and selling physical products. My original 2025 Shopify 1099-K showed roughly $100,000 in gross payments, and I already filed my 2025 taxes reporting my income and deducting my business expenses. Then, around early October 2026, Shopify sent a corrected 2025 1099-K showing only about $6,300 for January. All the other months showed no income, even though I had sales throug”
“One thing I’d pay particular attention to is validating the Storefront API and checkout flow across every market before committing to the migration. With 14 countries, different currencies, local payment methods and separate TLDs, I’d test the complete purchase journey market by market, including cart persistence, pricing consistency, discounts, refunds and order data flowing into your existing systems. I’d also map out the payment gateway requirements early, particularly for markets where Shopi”
“Seems like you're going to need an app for this one. Best option would be to create the shipping options as free, but called "Pickup Church" and "Pickup Pub" and then have flow send out an email to them with the detailed instructions about pickup, and be sure to mention SEVERAL TIMES that they are to wait until the correct date (or you email to tell them it's ready, etc). Include a link to your shipping policy, which should have a clear section outlining how this work”
“You can add the craft groups as locations but uncheck "Track inventory" on those two, so Shopify won't split your stock across them. Then enable local pickup for those locations in your shipping and delivery settings and customers get a pickup dropdown without your home address showing. If that still fights you, a pickup app like Store Pickup + Delivery handles custom collection points cleanly without touching inventory.”
“I went to a seminar on the new shipping functionality on Tuesday and yes it should try to pick the right box size for multi piece orders, with the note that this only works if you use Shopify shipping and will get better at selection as you use it more”
“A few months ago Shopify changed the label format for UPS labels. The USPS / DHL labels are the same, but whatever they did to the UPS labels changed how they print on my thermal printer. They are a little fuzzy and not as crisp. The USPS / DHL labels are perfect. I tried changing the scale sizing and it doesn't change the fuzziness. “My online store offers local pickup from a couple of locations that are NOT linked to the location of the business address on our Shopify. If I turn on local collection, I can only do so linked to the address of my house, which I do not want. My solution was to add free shipping options listing the address of the pickup points, a local craft group. For the people who go to this, it works well. However, this is only a fraction of the customer base. This lists them as a shipping option, not a coll”

“You don't need a paid plugin for this. Shopify's own Order Printer app is free and the templates are plain Liquid, so you can edit them into a proper tax invoice. What the ATO wants on it: the words "Tax invoice" as the heading, your business name and ABN, issue date, a description of each item with quantity and price, and the GST amount (or a line saying total price includes GST). For sales of $1,000 or more you also need the buyer's name or ABN, which you can pull from th”

“if you’re only left with €2–3 after product cost, tax, shipping + packaging, you’re probably not missing some secret ecommerce formula. the product just might not have much room in it. also make sure you’ve counted stuff like payment fees, refunds/returns, discounts + customer acquisition. from there the main levers are usually sourcing cheaper, charging more, or increasing AOV with bundles/upsells so shipping and packaging eat a smaller share of the order.”
“My listings across my shop all have seemingly random arrival estimate dates. This single listing has different arrival estimates for two different colors. They all are in stock, and have the same processing profile and same shipping profile. Nothing in the settings explains the difference. “We work with Shopify store owners a bit, and shipping cost is one of those things that keeps coming up when they’re trying to understand their actual margins. Especially for stores selling across different countries. Here are a few methods merchants have asked us to account for: 1. Shipping based on quantity Weight doesn’t always reflect the actual cost of shipping. For example, a fragile product might be lightweight, but shipping 3 or 4 units can require more packaging, handling, or even a larg”
“Hi! I have a lot of different stationery/gift products and Shopify shipping LOVESSS to stick everything into first class that cannot be shipped as a flat. So I'm curious if anyone has tips/tricks to get them set up correctly -- Greeting cards/stickers -- first class makes sense Pins, washi tape, magnets, needle minders, ornaments etc -- things that are small but not totally flat, keep getting flagged for first class Heavier things -- notebooks, trivets, etc The big thing I want to avoid is m”
“Hi all! ***NOTE: I meant POD, NOT dropshipping, but am unable to edit my post title*** So I am an Etsy shop owner in Canada. I sell photo prints on canvas and greeting cards. Because the prices were so high with Canadian POD companies, I chose a POD company in the US. Now, I'm wondering how this would work tariffs-wise. Anybody know? “in the us it's a lot simpler since we use a resale certificate with suppliers, so there's no tax on the buy side at all. the sales tax we collect never touches the margin math, it just sits in a separate bucket until it gets filed”
“The big “right, about that...” stuff for me would be markets, checkout extensibility, tax/duties, currencies, translations, URL/SEO handling and all the edge cases around country-specific catalogs/pricing. With 14 markets and separate TLDs, I’d also test cart/session behavior really hard when users cross locale/domain boundaries. Don’t just validate the happy-path checkout, test refunds, partial captures, gift cards, subscriptions if relevant, local payment methods and weird address formats. The”
“I'm researching how small ecommerce sellers handle international sales: shipping, VAT, duties, returns. 1. Have you lost money on international orders or had customers hit with surprise fees? 2. How do you calculate your real margin per country? 3. Would you pay for a tool that shows, per product and country, the buyer's total cost and what you actually keep? How much would feel fair? Honest answers, including "no", really help. Thanks! submitted by /u/EmilyPec [lin”

“Hi! I’m looking for a US-based 3PL/fulfillment center for a small toy/collectibles brand. The company owner is based in Europe, but we need inventory stored and orders fulfilled within the US. We use Shopify, so direct Shopify integration is essential. Our sales are drop-based rather than consistent: some months we may have around 100 orders, sometimes fewer, and sometimes no orders at all. We release a few limited product drops per year, so we need a 3PL that is comfortable with low and irregul”
“Can we force the system to ship entire orders from a preferred location A? Apologize if this seems basic, new to Shopify, didn’t have this issue with BigCommerce as it was not aware of who had what inventory.”
“no need for an third party app. Shopify's shipping functionality is robust and can handle this. an app will cost money, slow the site and most likely give you a headache down the road. always look into the built in functionality before using an app. sure there are reasons to use them here and there, but most apps are simply not necessary. people are just too lazy to learn the platform.”
