Customers experience unpredictable delays, holds, and verification issues when depositing checks, regardless of their banking history or the check's origin. This creates frustration, financial uncertainty, and security concerns, especially when dealing with inheritance or business payments.

“I just updated the post to accommodate the confusion, thank you so much for your insight! The receiving bank did ask for a hold harmless to be sent by the lender, (the lending bank seemed like this was the first time they’ve heard of this process, and acted very confused/unsure what to do). I am at the waiting point right after that occurrence (been 2-3 weeks since that conversation) and have not heard anything from either party. “I handed a $1,700 check on my credit union account to an authorized installer of a Company. It was made payable to the Company, not the authorized installer. Authorized installer wrote "For Deposit" on the back of the check, and deposited it into its account. 62 days passed, and I didn't hear peep one from the authorized installer. (Contract said 60 days required to obtain materials). I started complaining and learned that Company never received contract, or notice of any kind, fro”

Made out to “treasurer and customer” but customer decided to go cash the check 🙄 Of course the bank that allowed that is the one at fault, but we actually had to fill out forms (from our correspondent bank, since that’s where the check was drawn on) and get them signed by the treasurer since they were the ones who were supposed to receive the funds. It was a different process than any of the other fraud check paperwork we’ve”
“Of course, the bank has an image of the cleared bill pay check, which presumably shows the incorrect address to which it was mailed. Might better to just be straight with the bank in this case, no? “When I was a teller and processing checks, we were required to match payee line to account holder. We would reject checks unless to account holder or cash. Too much fraud nowadays so we had to double check. Once it was scanned then nobody else checked it. Big banks like Wells Fargo, BofA, etc should have a department to review teller transactions to verify they were done correctly. A lot of businesses have remote deposit for checks and that is probably where mistakes are overlooked. [re: Is a ch”
“Now that the claim is reopened I'm sure their position will be wait and see. BUT now I've got a cancelled check and something I could actually take action with instead of not knowing who stole it. So if USAA rejects this again for some weird reason I have real evidence to show. [re: Is a check "to" field enforceable? Sent a check to wrong address, they cashed, dispute denied.]”

“Bank receives funds for an account of one of their customers with a delivery date in 2 days. They hold it in an account accumulating interest and only turn over the original amount to their customers on the delivery date. Do it for enough $’s and the interest becomes very appreciable. [re: Why are ach transfers between banks so slow in the US?]”
“Just ask yourself why you are paying to ship it fast. With fraud, urgency is a priority. They want you to deposit the check fast and transfer the funds fast (before it returns or you start to realize your situation is sketchy). [re: Holy that was fast]”
“Hello everyone, My life has been a living hell past 2 weeks because of one business check deposit of $10k given to me by a family friend. I went inside a branch to deposit it on October 1, no problem. The following day I get an email saying my account is on hold because of unusual activity. I call the fraud department, and they keep on asking me for a "business number" whereas my friend usually has his personal number to handle calls. I kept on telling them this, but they were like no”
“Well they normally allow a simple signature while giving out a check i feel . In bob i have a dummy simple signature [re: SBI account holder here — I forgot the signature I used when opening my account. What should I do before issuing my first cheque?]”
“Having worked in banking for 20 Years, yeah, I know that. Incant count the number of calls I got "the check can't be fraud, it's a cashiers check" [re: Holy that was fast]”
“What's dumb about it? Why is it smart for your bank to just hold on to your deposits until "payday" when they already have the money why not just release it? [re: PNC Early Pay is coming!]”
“Chase? That always happens to me. They take the money like 2-3 days after I submitted it [re: Submitted payment but it’s not reflecting in account yet.]”
“Definitely not true. Banks I’ve worked for put holds on checks because they’re cashier checks. They are fraudulent just as easy as personal checks are these days. [re: Holy that was fast]”
“Yeah no bank is gonna cash a 5 figure check on a brand new account/relationship with zero funds in said account. Not to mention basically every bank requires a minimum opening deposit and you can’t cash something on the account before making said deposit. Most banks place new account holds on any checks deposited into an account within the first 30 days unless it’s drawn off that bank. [re: Holy that was fast]”
“The best thing to do is to contact the issuing bank of the cashiers check and confirm it has been paid. Unfortunately cashiers checks can be fraudulently created. Federal guidelines determine when different items must be made available. Just because a check you deposited has been made available, it does not mean the item has actually cleared and been paid. [re: Holy that was fast]”
“All they need to do is transfer the money from your account to the correct account. Happened at my bank too [re: ATM error resulted in someone’s else’s check going into my Account]”
“Cashiers checks are guaranteed checks. In most cases it’s seen as good as cash. You technically could have cashed the check at the teller line then deposited the cash into your account and had the funds available immediately if you had wanted to. [re: Holy that was fast]”
“You should be good. With cashiers checks the bank draws the money from its own reserves (after deducting it from your account or taking your cash upfront), the check is guaranteed and will not bounce. Unless of course the bank has no reserves but if that happens there are bigger problems [re: Holy that was fast]”
“Interesting they added opt out instead of opt in. most banks just throw it on and let you deal with it. I got a similar thing with my bank and it messed up my budgeting because the paycheck came in friday instead of monday and then the next cycle was weird. took me a month to adjust. at least PNC gives you a phone number and branch option to kill it before it starts. [re: PNC Early Pay is coming!]”
“I worked for PNC for a bit, and I would read the funds availability policy, especially for a new account. I have seen a check show in the available balance, looked like it cleared to the customer, but could see they were still holding up the check in house. Often a mobile deposit would initially go through and show in the account, but get rejected a few days later because some parts were illegible, or because the check was made out to a different name for example, and people's accounts did g”

“I started a new account on Tuesday and deposited a cashier's check drawn on a different bank for 5 figures as the initial deposit. I'm checking my mobile app and the full amount minus what I paid to have my new card expedited is showing in the account. Is it possible for a cashier's check to clear in 2 days or should I wait at least a week to spend any of it? submitted by /u/Fuzzy_Builder_2153 [link] [comments]”
“Can anyone help me. I have a tax return set to deposit into my navy federal checking account. The account is closed off, but o do have an active savings account. Is it possible that they will take what I owe for the checking and deposit the remaining balance into my savings since the checking is closed off. “First off: I’ve never deposited a personal check. So I’m not familiar with how long it usually takes to process. I get direct deposit from my job and old paychecks from past work that took no more than 1 day (and on Fridays) to deposit and be in my account. So forgive me for not being all that familiar with how this process plays out. Second off: it was a mobile deposit [re: Helpful advice wanted on depositing a personal check.]”
“It’s been one business day. Saying it’s been 4 days is irrelevant. It’s the same as you depositing it Tuesday. Was it in person or atm or mobile deposit? [re: Helpful advice wanted on depositing a personal check.]”
“Hmm maybe try a small local bank or credit union where the bank manager may be more willing to help you and do the extra work of manually verifying the check. Sorry youre dealing with this BS.. [re: Having trouble with short term disability checks.]”
“With the information you have given here, I can think of a hundred different reasons why they wouldn't accept your check. That is to say, you've given us no info at all and nobody here will have an answer for you. Take it to the bank again to deposit. If they won't accept it, ask them why and how you can fix it. Approach them with a positive attitude. Focus on finding a solution and identifying the next steps you need to take. If they can't help you understand what is going on, i”
“I would still call them and see if they can help you. Maybe they will let you open an online account and deposit the check. Might be a hold on it though. [re: No bank is letting my fiancée deposit his short term disability checks.]”
“Shame on that Bank 😊 [re: No bank is letting my fiancée deposit his short term disability checks.]”
“i have no idea, bc at the bank i work at, we dont even run the checks thru the machine until the end of the day. maybe bc we’re a small/medium sized bank. i wish they had more info than just “no”. for us if a check is questionable, we just put it on an extended hold (10 days) and just tell the customer. if it bounces then it bounces and if it doesn’t then it doesn’t. maybe try a smaller bank or credit union? [re: No bank is letting my fiancée deposit his short term disability checks.]”
“My fiancée had a stroke August 1st and we finally got teamcare to send disability checks. We have gone to Walmart to cash it, and they say they can't after they run it through the machine. We have gone into Wells Fargo and tried to deposit it as well as pnc and td. They all run it through a machine and then say they can't accept it. I had teamcare on the phone inside Wells Fargo to confirm that the check is real and good but they still won't accept it. if anyone has any idea why this”
“My fiancée had a stroke August 1 and we have finally gotten teamcare to send checks but everywhere we go to cash them, they get denied. We have tried Walmart, pnc bank, td bank, Wells Fargo and chime. For some reason the machine doesn't accept it and they all say we have to call teamcare. Teamcare basically said the checks are good and there's nothing they can do on their end. Does anyone have any experience with this, or know anywhere that does take disability checks? We haven't bee”
“In theory, it should have a line indicating what bank and the last few digits of the account number that your money was deposited in. [re: “Non negotiable” check]”
“that means deposit is tomorrow. God damn it. submitted by /u/PKMN_Trainer_Kitana [link] [comments]”
“this is the real blind spot. the person signing the check and the person force-closing the app 4 times a shift are completely different people. if your only feedback channel runs through the admin, you're basically running a survey where the respondent never experienced the problem. get a direct line to a couple drivers, even informally. one whatsapp group with 3 drivers would've surfaced this in a week. [re: My highest paying customer almost left bc of bad testing]”
“Is there footage of the person who made the deposit? Why would anyone put money into your account in person? If they wanted you to have the money they should give you the check. When I deposit money into my own account I still have to use my debit card & put in my PIN as validation that it is me. Sounds liks someone is testing the waters to steal your identity. “Good call, thanks. There's a "Try a sample" button on the page that loads a fake export for the bank you pick, and one sample has a small balance gap on purpose so you can see the check flag it. I'll add a quick before/after with a flipped sign too. [re: [Web, Beta] Need 2 people who upload bank CSVs to QuickBooks Online to try a free converter]”
“I assume it's a state-by-state thing. In my state, it cannot be stopped within 90 days and it must be cashed with three years. It's a Uniform Commercial Code thing. [re: Whats bad about cashier checks?]”
“Depends on bank. You can place it immediately in some cases. [re: Whats bad about cashier checks?]”

“You do mobile deposit on your bank's app. The app will take a photo of it it. You always need to sign a check you are depositing/cashing. Once successfully deposited and cleared, you should destroy the physical check or write a big 'VOID' on it. [re: How to Cash A Check Online]”
“Hello Guys, I got two checks from my landlords, they are my security deposit refunds. How do I cash it online? Do I just snap photos of them? Do I need to put a signature or write like “mobile only”? Thank you submitted by /u/Able-Cantaloupe-9427 [link] [comments]”
“If you can ach transfer the money it will be available a lot sooner than depositing a check especially with a new bank account. Maybe speed isn’t important but just note if you deposit a large check into a new bank account you could see a 2 week or more hold on the funds [re: How do you get cash into online banks?]”
“Government checks have to be deposited in person this goes for any bank. A hold cannot be placed on a government check funds have to be made available immediately, and there is too long of a delay for electronic banking. [re: PNC is clearly not set up to serve California customers]”
“Ask for a copy of the check.... [re: Random cheque deposited into my TD account from a business I've never dealt with.]”
“The two TD branches I work with require a debit card or license to make a deposit, even cash into my account. I wonder how they could deposit it onto your account unless it was a mistake or fraud. [re: Random cheque deposited into my TD account from a business I've never dealt with.]”
“See what business it was and call them. Maybe it’s something you forgot about or they pulled up the wrong person with your name. [re: Random cheque deposited into my TD account from a business I've never dealt with.]”
“Anybody can deposit money/check to your account, as long as the use the correct account number. If this is an error, they will have to work with the bank to get the money back , NOT YOU. [re: Random cheque deposited into my TD account from a business I've never dealt with.]”
