Small online store owners are experiencing sudden and unexplained payment holds on their PayPal accounts, particularly after periods of high sales volume. This freeze in funds disrupts their business operations and creates significant financial uncertainty, leaving them unable to fulfill orders or pay suppliers. The lack of clear communication and resolution from PayPal exacerbates the frustration.

“Small ecommerce business, three years with them, no chargebacks worth mentioning. One larger-than-usual order triggered a review and now the funds are locked until February. Support just repeats the same line about "risk assessment". I'm not even arguing the review at this point, I just…”
“The money has already left my account and the payment posted days ago, but they will not release the funds to update the credit which is connected to my thirdparty finance tracker. So instead of that balance reading correctly for me to hit my payoff goal, it remains incorrect and messes up my timeline in this thirdparty app. Why is your third party app reading your credit limit instead of your balance? What app isn't aware that credit limit – available credit ≠ balance? Given that you are re”

“god that is terrifying, 14 grand for listings that never even sold is insane. hope the solicitor can get somewhere cause shopify just passing along a fine with zero breakdown feels like getting mugged by a middleman [re: Shopify hit me with an $18,565 Mastercard BRAM fine — has anyone successfully challenged one?]”
“Thanks — that delivery-date vs account-level distinction is the key thing I was missing. Quick transparency note: the figures in my post are illustrative for discussion, not my actual payout data. Your point about Q4 climbing sales making each day's hold bigger than the release is exactly the pattern worth checking first. For anyone hitting this: is the settlement report the only reliable way to see which type of reserve is active, or does Seller Central's reserve page actually label it”
“[PayPal] ★ 1/5 (v10.5.2) — I’ve never in my life had any issues with PayPal up until these recent times. My money being withheld for weeks to my account being withdrawn from purchases only to be told by apple a couple of weeks later I owe them for the purchases I’ve made to the horrible customer service that does absolutely nothing except for gaslight and be rude and out of pocket to blame shift onto the customers to not allowing my bank card to be registered and no explanation for it to getting”
“I have tried for 8 hours solid, without eating or sleeping to get a program that will let me accept a payment from a client AND NOTHING WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not paypal not stripe not square NONE OF THEM WORK paypal is blocking and flagging me either for being too new or for having my bank account linked to other accounts but it won't tell me what those accounts are nor can any of the people you have to wait on the phone for an hour to talk to tell you what thos”

“[PayPal] ★ 1/5 (v10.5.2) — I tried establishing my business with PayPal I’m a general contractor and I provide services. I was paid through PayPal and they put a 21 day hold on my funds when I explain to them that I provide a service and the funds was a deposit to perform my service. They put me through over two week battle of proving that I provide the service when finally it was. Approved they put me through it all over again because someone accidentally pressed the wrong button then they put”
“It did not hold anything for me. But, there were people complaining about payment hold for their account. I am getting started with dodopayments and reading those feedback made me confused whether to continue with dodopayments or not. [re: What is the best payment gateway for saas and digital products?]”
“Which reddit threads though? Payout holds are usualy a reserve or a KYC mismatch, not a gateway deciding to keep your balance, and 'people complained' plus 'AI recommended it' is two rumours, not a data point. [re: What is the best payment gateway for saas and digital products?]”
“Has anyone here used Fourthwall to run an online store? If so, have you experienced issues with delayed payouts or funds being held? I run a small online bookstore and use Fourthwall to list and sell my inventory. I initially really liked the platform, but I’m becoming increasingly concerned about how they’re handling seller payouts. My payout was originally scheduled for October 5, 2026. That date came and went without payment, so I contacted support. First, I was told they were completing veri”
“I don’t use instant pay I use SoFi bank and I withdraw as soon as payment is issued I don’t use direct deposit and wait so usually funds go in I did 2 block on the 10/07/26 I withdrawal in the morning. “[PayPal] ★ 1/5 (v10.5.2) — Been Using 15 years. Locked my money out my account while they verified. My business been using all this time. Never had any problems from my business. They wait until money in PayPal account and then lock. They had all my account numbers driver license for over 15 years. Now they want to play games.”
“Usually the money does not reach you right away. Payments follow your normal payout schedule, a few business days after the order, and new stores often get a slower or held schedule at first. Also check your payment processor rules on preorders, some limit how long you can charge before shipping. A safer path is a small first batch with a clear ship date shown at checkout. Your payout settings page will have the exact timing for your account. [re: Taking pre-orders as a new store; when do funds”
“That timing is suspect as hell, stopping right after you argued with support makes me wonder if they actually did something on the backend [re: James Anderson updates?]”

“Why was Shopify Payments disabled in the first place? Any background on what led to it? [re: Shopify promised fund release after Sep 24 (120-day hold), still holding my funds in Shopify Balance]”
“Hi everyone, looking for advice from merchants who have been through this situation. My store: Shopify Payments was disabled and my appeal was declined (final decision). I am NOT trying to get Shopify Payments reinstated. Shopify sent official notification that my funds would be held for a 120-day chargeback protection period, and remaining money would be released after September 24, 2026. The 120-day window has passed. My Shopify Balance account now has $ there, but the Transfer Funds button is”
“alright so ik the conditions and i have fulfilled each one of them but still i havent gotten my payout processed, i even checked my bank connection its all good on my side i mailed them like 4 times no response and i feel like i just fucked up ig.. but yeah any reason why this happening? submitted by /u/DarkXPheonix [link] [comments]”
“Same for me, received just 1%. Made the tax payment in the last week of September.”

“You’re 100% right! I’m just frustrated that PayPal takes money from me and yet can’t be accessible. It’s also an embarrassing look for a major company.”
“Stripe froze my store as if its in a high risk country for chargebacks - no warning, funds held 90 days, so i tried like two crypto processors, the same KYC docs. Gave up, self-hosted it off cPanel, set up QryptoPay via BeAdmin on my own box, USDT taking orders in under 20 minutes. No idea if it scales past a few hundred orders a month, but nobody freezes it on me again, anyone running self-hosted crypto payments for a real store, not just a BTC tip jar? submitted by /u/Awaara_pagal”
“Oh then possibly a sync error from ShopMonkey? Do you have access to their account to check deposit history?”
“[PayPal] ★★ 2/5 (v10.5.2) — Shut my account down and failed to disclose why and withheld account funds for a time of 120 days without proof of wrongdoing”
“Brutal timing, but this post is going to save someone else the same mistake, which means the four months still counted for something. One thing I'd add for anyone reading: a support agent saying it looks fine is not approval. Get the funds flow in writing before you build the billing layer around it. Hope PayPal comes through fast so you get to post the real launch thread.”
“I get payouts all week long. And the day of so long as it's before a certain time of day.”
“My old store was but my new store is taking 3 days. Am I crazy or did I use to get payouts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday? Now I only get payouts Monday- Thursday.”
“Can you get new sales on a different processor than shopify(stripe) while paying off the load? Badically integrate a different processor on through your Shopify instead of using their payments”
“[Shopify] ★ 1/5 (v10.2638.0) — Shopify holds our sales revenue for 5 business days—essentially a full calendar week—despite confirming our account is in good standing with no holds or issues. Why? Because Shopify’s own automated system imposed the rule. No actual timeframe for when it will change, no appeal process, and support wouldn’t provide a supervisor who could fix it. The answer is basically “keep processing and maybe our system will eventually shorten it.” Which is a great way to run a”
“The painful bit is usually the mismatch between when inventory leaves and when cash lands, not the interest rate on a bridge loan. I’d map your real settlement lag by processor (card, PayPal, shop-pay) for the last 60 days — average and p90 — then set reorder points off the p90, not the advertised “T+2”. Daily payouts help, but so does shrinking the window between sale and ship where you can (preorders, tighter SKU count). If you’re still borrowing every month after that, the issue is margin/wor”
“We’re scaling our daily order volume, but working capital is getting squeezed hard because funds take forever to hit our bank account. Between rolling reserves, slow payout cycles, and payment retries failing, managing inventory restocks has become a constant headache. How are you guys optimizing your backend stack to keep cash flow predictable without taking high-interest short-term loans? submitted by /u/dylan_ward24 [link] [comments]”

“Any advice? Move the bulk of your funds over to one of your other UK bank accounts. Ask HSBC when they expect this investigation to be complete and if they intend to provide compensation for the inconvenience you have suffered,”
“Every order I get, Shopify now takes out 10% and puts it in a locked account until January 27th. I just took out a 16k$ Shopify loan, and then they hit me with this. The loan repayment is 17% of every sale. So now I have to pay 27% of every sale back to Shopify. I can’t have Shopify take 10% for a reserve. This is extremely unfair, and if it holds, I’m projected to go bankrupt by December. Is there any way I can get this reserve removed? It’s due to chargeback risk, yet I have 0 chargebacks, wit”
“If they stop at the CTA, changing the order may only move the same hesitation one step later. Before asking them to enter financial information, the page may not yet make the immediate payoff feel concrete enough. What does the CTA say now, and what can someone see or calculate before they have to create an account?”
“She was surprised to see how long my cases were open without resolution. At first she said a new case will be opened with 7-10 business days, then she just escalated it automatically on her end and it changed to a 72 hour window. I said I’ve been waiting nearly 2 months since I first called in early August which seemed to raise the alarm”
“ohhh ok got it. I've been panicking and researching for days now bro. thank you for sharing your exp too”
“Our transactions have stopped working since 12pm today (27th sep AEST). Customer is seeing the charge on their card, but our transaction logs are showing no sale. We have photos of 2 of the 3 transaction logs, but no evidence on our app of the sale. Tried on 2 different phones, and 2 different readers. Currently out a couple of 100 dollars. Anyone else seeing this Edit to add. 2:30pm AEST transactions are now showing. Reports still missing the trabsactions submitted by /u/CombatWomba”
“The outage occurred when I was depositing my earnings for today and now they are not showing up. I spent an hour on hold with support only for them to say “be patient, it will arrive”. DoorDash has stolen money from me before so I’m praying for the best but prepared for the worst. Anyone else experiencing this specific issue? submitted by /u/middlequestioner [link] [comments]”

“The week delay is normal for new accounts and it shortens as you build history. Fast fulfillment, tracking on every order and low chargebacks are what move it. Switching to daily payouts helps once you're past the initial hold, since you get a deposit every business day instead of one lump. For the pay-the-supplier-first problem, two things. Pay suppliers on a business credit card so the card float covers the gap between the customer paying you and Shopify paying out. And for bigger custom o”
“That pretty much confirms it’s a Shopify-side reporting delay rather than anything in your setup. Since the orders and payouts are fine and those dashboard warnings appeared later, I’d leave the tracking configuration alone and keep the affected order IDs for reconciliation once reporting catches up. Frustrating that the warning appeared hours after support first noticed the delay, but at least it rules out an actual checkout issue.”
“[PayPal] ★ 1/5 (v10.4.0) — PayPal permanently deactivated my account after I received payment for freelance work. The only explanation I got was “unusual activity.” They wouldn’t tell me what activity they meant, and now they’re holding money I earned for 180 days. I offered to help verify the payment with the company that sent it. Support said they didn’t need any documents and the decision would stand. How am I supposed to resolve a problem they won’t explain? Stupid app, awful customer servi”
