Customers experience unexpected chargebacks after seemingly successful custom orders. This creates a frustrating situation for both the customer and the business, involving lost revenue and potential reputational damage due to the unexpected financial reversal. The process appears to have been confirmed and approved by the customer initially.

“Ah I gotcha. If you're not seeing anything listed in the online transaction history you probably will just have to call tomorrow and see what happened. Could just be because its the weekend. [re: I reported my Wells Fargo credit card as lost on Friday,…”

“Refuse it and get a receipt for that refusal. At the end of the day you need to deal with the seller. The bank only handles their portion. If the seller wants to come after you with collections or small claims, they can do that. [re: Seller shipped item after chargeback filed, refuse shipment or not?]”

“in our shop it's usually me who catches it, i got alerts set up but sometimes a customer tells us first with a screenshot like "they have it for 5 less" and then i have to stop everything and check if it's even true we have a hard floor we don't go below but between that and regular price it's basically a two minute debate over slack, no process really which bit us once when we matched and forgot why and then the competitor went back up and we were stuck at the lower pr”
“TL/DR: Seller shipped item after chargeback filed, wants me to refuse delivery. Should I refuse or accept/request return label? Amex Blue Business card. Purchase date 8/29 for an on stock item. I emailed for info 5 times and called 3 over the next month or so. No response. A couple times after leaving a message, I'd get an automatic email from their website saying the order status had changed from 'processing' to 'shipping', and then one on 10/6 where it had changed from '”

It usually cost them an extra $3 and it takes me extra time. For the first few I ate the cost and said it's ok I'll do it no problem because I didn't think it was wise to cancel sales over something that is only 2% of the total cost. “Can't tell you why, but the trigger is usually one of three: order value sitting well outside your history, a card issued somewhere you don't normally see, or a buyer account with no history. A step change in order size reads as the signal, not the absolute number. Two operational things that actually shorten these, and they're boring: Fulfil with tracking and upload it. Proof of delivery is the one input that moves a risk review; without it the clock just runs to the end date. Treat”

“Many chargebacks are from fraudsters using stolen credit cards. You'll lose for sure. But even if you have the name & address of the person who received the goods, no one cares, no one prosecutes. It's the small business that pays. [re: When did credit card companies become judge and jury? Small businesses are getting crushed by chargebacks.]”
“My Roarbank credit card statement for July 2026 contained an unexplained ₹40 opening balance, even though I had fully paid my June statement. The July statement also showed: * ₹669 and ₹127 credits marked “USM” on 23 July. * A ₹932 debit marked “Payment” on 24 July, which I had not initiated. * A final statement amount due of ₹576.80. I emailed the bank on 21 August and followed up on 27 August and 2 September, asking for a transaction-wise reconciliation, the source/reference of the ₹932 entry,”

“oh the lost response one is nasty, hadn’t given it much thought. So unless the contract literally says you bill on completed outcomes and dedupe by idempotency key, the customer just eats the double charge and never finds out. adding this to my list [re: Your pricing page is a contract. “I've owned a small, family-operated retail and installation business for over 20 years, and there's something about the credit card dispute process that I find incredibly troubling. A customer can purchase thousands of dollars in materials, receive the products and services, and then initiate a chargeback. The merchant is suddenly put in a position of having to prove they deserve to keep money they already earned. Meanwhile, the business has paid suppliers, employees, installers, overhea”
“First time I’ve ever had to dispute a charge with any bank and now I feel kind of lost. I got an email yesterday saying the dispute was ruled in the merchant’s favour. Some background on this: I’m a Canadian and my primary bank is one of the fully digital banks we have over here. I reached out to a driving school locally for private driving lessons and a driving test. I submitted a form on their website and they never got back to me. Fast-forward a week later, I reached out to a different school”
“Cancel it. Ask them to wire the funds, offer a 20 dollar discount for the hassle. Their payment system is really smart, I wouldn’t fill it. [re: High Risk Fraud Order. Matching Address, CVV. Should I cancel]”
“wild that a $24 refund took two denials and a management escalation, but at least you proved that persistence pays off. [re: FINAL UPDATE: The Billing Escalations team reviewed my ticket and granted a FULL REFUND! We won! 🎉]”
“The replies about customers not sending screenshots suggest the process needs a fallback that doesn’t depend on getting one. I’d start with “What were you trying to do, and what happened instead?” Then ask for the approximate time and the affected page so the team can check what it already has before asking the customer for more work. For anything passed to engineering, I’d keep a short record: customer’s goal, expected vs actual behavior, evidence already checked, what is still unknown, and who”
“Another possibility is that if you bought something online. Sometimes companies that appear to be domestic actually process transactions through an overseas headquarters. I have had numerous clients come in to dispute similar charges only to find out that John Smith that they bought a gadget from off of amazon marketplace is actually the domestic shipper for Xiǎo Míng who actually recieves and processes the payments. “Have you activated it?? If so look on the back and see what their customer service number. Contact them directly because this is your payment method for purchasing. If they don’t have any answers go as high up on the chain as you can for upper management. 😊 Best of luck [re: Holy that was fast]”
“Hey everyone, I have amazing news! After being strictly denied twice by the first-line support agent (Brian), I followed your advice, demanded a manual review, and escalated the ticket to the management team. Just now, Shahan from the Billing Escalations team took over my case and authorized a full $24.00 refund back to my card as a one-time exception! The official Stripe receipts have already hit my email inbox. Lesson learned: If you get auto-charged on the same day for a historically frozen/l”
“My charge backs have spiked like crazy the last 30 days for no reason. Usually it's just subscriptions or renewals. I just got my first charge back for a tip ever. It was a tip I got all the way back in May lmao the weird thing is the charge back has the red reverse arrow next to it were most of my charge backs just have the blue check mark. Ive had a couple others with the red before but it's always been charge backs that happen within a few days of the transaction. Does this mean they”
“That is frustrating, especially when you downgraded right away. Keep the emails showing the invoice date, the failed payments and the time you downgraded, and reply to support asking for a review in writing. If they still say no, the CFPB says that for a credit card you can send written notice within 60 calendar days after the charge appeared on your statement. Today's charge is brand new, so you have time, but don't let it sit. [re: Charged for a "frozen" subscription period and denied”

“EXACTLY what I am going through right now. I am so pissed off. They sent me the wrong wheel hub and bearing. Now I have to send all these photos to prove they sent the item. I have provided every single piece of evidence they're asking for now it's "is it 5 lug?" Mf don't piss me off. You see it's 5 lug in the pictures. I just sent back a worded response back letting them know to stop wasting my time over a product they incorrectly sent me and to provide the return ship”
“Because the process of disputing requires: Knowing the amount of the dispute, which could change ($1 auth holds -> full amount, adding tips, etc.) Trying to work things out with the merchant - and you need proof it didn't, which includes waiting for a transaction to post (because pending transactions can disappear/get reversed and then there's no proof for the dispute.) In addition: Disputes take several days to resolve, at which point the pending transaction will probably have posted”
“no. if you order food and they dont deliver it, you wait till it posts, dispute it, and they can take the money back from the merchant. the merchant can then challenge the dispute with evidence. if you reverse that, order food, receive it, and somehow block the transaction while pending, there is no posted transaction for the merchant to dispute through the chargeback process. they could still try to collect payment another way, but they cant dispute a card charge that never posted. [re: Why can”
“Same way they dispute a fraudulent dispute? [re: Why can't you dispute a transaction before it is posted?]”
“Imagine ordering food delivery, they deliver it to you and while the charge is pending you just block it. they would have 0 recourse to get back what you stole. how would they dispute a blocked pending transaction where they never even got the money? [re: Why can't you dispute a transaction before it is posted?]”
“Yes obviously the first thing you do is try to fix it with the merchant. But nowadays so many people just say "we don't/can't reverse transactions." It would be nice if you could just tell them to block the transaction ahead of time because you know its coming. [re: Why can't you dispute a transaction before it is posted?]”
“part of the dispute process involves proving that you tried to work it out with the merchant. you should contact the merchant while its pending and then a credit card dispute would be next and formal legal action would be the last step. and credit card providers legally have to take disputes seriously, so making sure the charge is real and not just a temporary hold is important so they dont waste time on nothing. [re: Why can't you dispute a transaction before it is posted?]”
“Both theoretical and real. what merchant would not give you the product seconds after you pay This is pretty much a weekly occurance with food pickup/delivery. Also lots of online merchants will pull scams like sending you an empty box. I know you can dispute it after the fact, but why not before if you clearly know ahead of time? why not call police Because then getting back $10 turns into days of work with no guarantee you'll get it back. “Still not exactly clear on the issue though, like what’s the actual loss because you used one card instead of another? [re: Valid chargeback? Ordered on wrong card]”
“yea one and done. any particular reason you wish it was on different card [re: Valid chargeback? Ordered on wrong card]”
“If you don’t receive the purchase, then you should look into contacting your financial institution. Disputes are for fraudulent activity or if you don’t receive the goods/services. [re: Valid chargeback? Ordered on wrong card]”

“Right now I’m in a card chargeback dispute with a mall merchant because he sold me some fake stuff and I need to figure out how to win the case and get my money back ?!!! Edit since it was vague I purchased some sunglasses from a store at the mall that told me they were real After further inspection they r not and I emailed them for a refund and they never contacted me back also called the receipt said no refunds So now I’m doing a chargeback with discover what should I do to help this go in my”
“They often decline especially online, due to vfs and secure3d issues, but if u want to sell it I'll buy w paypal! Ur grandma was doing what she could lol as far as i can tell vanillagift has so many issues. I am willing to buy them cuz I have no issues using for groceries at walmart and when I have to pay at the pharmacy for meds. If ur still having issues just lmk! “Fair point: helping them could end there, with no reason to use my app. I’d be happy if they got the receipt back, but I haven’t heard back and don’t know whether that happened. That conversation gave me a question to investigate, not evidence of demand. [re: A lost receipt is a different onboarding problem from a messy receipt folder]”
“Agreed on starting with where and when they bought it. I’d use the statement or loyalty history to help trace the purchase, then ask the shop or manufacturer what evidence they accept. [re: A lost receipt is a different onboarding problem from a messy receipt folder]”

“Thought paid meant paid. Customer's ACH showed in our system, so the warehouse released a $64k order that afternoon. A few days later it came back returned, account closed. They'd been acquired and AP never updated anyone. Truck already left. New owners paid by wire two weeks later give or take after a lot of calls, so no villain here. We treated initiated as settled, sales pushed a good account through and AR didn't know what the return reason meant. Pay before ship now releases onl”
“Deduction and chargeback recovery is the one nobody wants to touch. It's weekly reconciliation hell across retailer portals, and most owners just write it off because nobody has time to dispute it. That's also why models like Growvana bundle it with operations rather than treating it as a one-off cleanup. Fixed-scope inventory reporting projects are fine, but the recurring money is in the stuff nobody else will do. [re: E-commerce owners/operators — I’d really value your perspective.]”
“Nick the Greek marked my order as complete (because they gave it to someone else). Told to come back next day, so I called first and was told they have no notes about making it for me again and it was marked completed. I charged back because I was just over it. Just felt it wasn’t worth fighting over $16 and then going to store to be told again that order was completed yesterday and they couldn’t do anything would have just enraged me. [re: Is it frowned upon to file chargebacks for small things”
“Yes, even then. Chargebacks should be a last resort. You should be working with the merchant for a refund before going to your bank to complain. [re: Is it frowned upon to file chargebacks for small things under <$20? Maybe do it 2-3 times a year. Will I get banned by my credit card company?]”
“As long as you put legitimate reasons and aren't faking it, then no. [re: Is it frowned upon to file chargebacks for small things under <$20? Maybe do it 2-3 times a year. Will I get banned by my credit card company?]”
“So this year in total, I’ve filed a total of 3 charges back. I have never filed chargebacks for expensive things, because that I would just return. But I’m total filing multiple chargebacks for small things. Is a bad thing? My disputes were more or less over food mistakes not worth driving back to get a refund for. - $6, Sold me dessert cup that was expire one day before I bought it - $7, Deli put liver paste on sandwich when order receipt stated no liver paste (it smells really bad and you can’”
“In my experience, the charge back is a villain, but in the open. I’ve had customers reply saying it was a mistake and they’ve tried to contact the bank to cancel it. We’ve submitted clear evidence with an email exchange etc. But it still gets lost, sometimes taking months. These experiences are what I’m referring to. I don’t know what your reply was about. Maybe you assumed that I was suggesting submitting evidence wasn’t worth it? [re: Responding to customer after chargeback?]”
