Homeowners are struggling to eradicate persistent fruit fly infestations despite employing common methods like vinegar traps, air-tight containers for produce, and electric zappers. The flies appear in multiple locations and resist standard elimination techniques.

Since it's fall and cold outside, could opening my window during the night help? I know the cold won't kill them but could it at least make them stop flying around all over my room and maybe just get in the damn apple cider vinegar already? “There are more and more of them each day. I've hidden all the fruit, set up vinegar traps everywhere, and even tried vacuuming them up, I take my trash out every single day, replace towels and sponges daily, I've sanitized my sink with bleach and pipes with sodium hydroxide and boiling water, but they're still everywhere. Lately, they've been gathering on things like moist dish sponges, towels, and the trash bin even when it doesn't contain anything edible. Vinegar traps only”
“We have fruit fly traps all around the house that these guys seem to ignore. They don’t seem to be coming from the sink, but hang out in kitchen cabinets by the sink (no food in these cabinets, just clean dishes and cleaning supplies). We’ve poured hot water down the drain multiple times, don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink, and put all food away but they just keep coming! “I had fruit flies show up in my bathroom a few weeks ago because of a forgotten banana peel in my room’s trash can. I threw it out and completely cleaned my trash can One fly kept hanging out thought and now a few weeks later, there’s more than before. There’s a few in our kitchen but so many in my bathroom upstairs and I don’t know why? I can’t think of a single food source in there. What can I do to stop them or where should I check for a source in the bathroom?? submitted by /u/th”

“Pretty sure they are fruit flies. I've tried the following. 1) Apple Cider Vinegar traps. I catch a ton. 2) Cleaning all the drains..bleach, vinegar and baking soda. Boiling water. 3) Scoured the entire kitchen looking for any possible source..including fridge and stove. 4) Threw my entire garbage can away. 5) blue light traps I am catching a ton.of them but there is always more! Problem is the apple cider vinegar seems to have attracted these tiny little, slow moving ants. Killed all the ones I see. No trail. They were scattered about on the counter foraging. “I let things get out of hand and I thought it was a simple matter, clean up, get rid of the garbage. Then I started reading. I have hired a team to deep clean but they can't start until mid October. I am working on the kitchen myself but want to get a head start. Even being cleaner is not helping. I know there are products to put down the drain to help, to wipe out the breeding areas. “I’m having a nightmare with these fruit flies in my apartment!! Ever since summer, we have had an influx of fruit flies. We managed to sort it mostly and get rid of them but as of late it’s like they’ve been ramping up! I’m not sure if it’s because we’re putting the radiator on more and speeding up their breeding cycle but catching/fighting/killing them honestly becoming so tedious and depressing. “hi so my apartment complex has a fruit fly problem and from what I've heard it's not just my apartment I have a vevo fly trap that works well enough but it's more of a bandaid than a solution. how can I permanently kill them or at least dramatically reduce their numbers? what products are best? submitted by /u/AleopardThatJumps [link] [comments]”
“Me and my wife stay in a vhcol apartment in the bay area, are always cleaning. Our arch nemesis are ants and fruit flies. “My apartment neighbor left a large box of rotten fruits and vegetables out in the breezeway the past 2 nights which attracted thousands of bugs. I got him to take it to the dumpster earlier but these fruit flies have gotten into my house and I’m panicking. There has to be at least a hundred in here and I know they multiply fast. WHAT DO I DO?? I did the stupid ACV with dish soap that never works and I have a single xevo plugin. But there’s so…many… submitted by /u/munshbutt [link] &#”
“I put out apple cider vinegar mixed with some dish soap and it killed a good number of fruit flies but there’s still a bunch of them flying around the trap and hanging out on top of the lid but not going in through the opening. I can’t tell if they are so dumb that they can’t find the opening or so smart that they know they’ll die if they go in submitted by /u/we24 [link] [comments]”

“We've been trying to get rid of fruit flies for a while now. Still can't find a source. I even keep the apples in the fridge now. Been pouring boil down the drain. Got traps from the store which have been working great but not enough. Anyways today I took it a step further and burned a whole stick of sage in the house. To the point that I was worried one of the neighbors would call the FD. Obv I did not stay in the house for this. Anyways we're clearing the smoke out now and there”
“Hello! I have had an issue in my current apartment with small flies for over a year. They were initially fruit flies and their numbers drastically decreased after I began covering all the drains religiously and making a concerted effort to do drain treatments/leave nothing out. They basically disappeared over the winter. However, this spring the flies returned. For some reason, the fruit flies have disappeared and have been replaced by phorid flies. They do not have the red eyes that the fruit f”
“We’ve got a fruit fly problem in our house. I know they’re fruit flies and not the lookalikes because they’ve got red eyes. We’ve done the usual stuff, took apart the pipes in the kitchen sinks and cleaned them out. We cleaned out underneath the sink too. We cleaned off the counters and emptied the trash and checked for any signs of nests. I even poured boiling water down both sinks. Finally, we used the vinegar solution, and that was working like a charm once we figured out the right mixture. B”
“It’s been 6 months up to a year of fighting against constant infestations of fruit flies. Every time I get their numbers down to like 2-5, they breed again. There is a new batch of stupid idiot BABIES as we speak. I’ve done EVERYTHING like not keeping fruit open in the house, cleaning the sink obsessively, cleaning the counter everyday of any crumb or speck of food, and getting these somewhat expensive traps as well as making my own soap vinegar traps. I am double bagging and tying up food trash”

“Running a back-of-house space (or managing one) and flies are a constant fight, sprays aren't great around food prep, and swatting one-by-one obviously doesn't scale. From what I've seen work in commercial kitchens: UV light traps with a glue board do the job silently with zero chemical residue, and they're a lot more HACCP-friendly than sprays. High-voltage zappers work faster but aren't great near food-prep counters, better suited to storage/back areas. If flies are getting”

“I desperately need to get rid of these. IDK what they even are. They keep flying into my face, in my eyes, up my nose and there are SO. MANY. OF THEM. I have tried tidying up the place a bit more, and I've tried the apple cider vinegar dish soap trap, and I've tried pouring boiling water down the drain but in the words of Smashmouth, they don't stop coming and they don't stop coming Please help me. “So I have some residue in my beer trash can, but everytime i replace the garbage bag in there or the normal trash can no flies fly out of the cans. So if they were spawning from there then surely a bunch of them would fly out? I have an old ac unit in my room, but i never see these things fly out from it. There is a little crawlspace in my room so maybe they spawn from there but Ill have to exerpiment and see if they do. I recently used a carpet cleaner all over my room cause i suspected maybe t”

“Hi there! New apartment owner and my life is currently being wrecked by these buggers. About two weeks ago we had left some bananas out and started getting some of what we presumed to be fruit flies. Apple cider traps were working for a bit then not working, the number seemed to dwindle until we got a big resurgence this weekend. For context, the flies are in practically every area of the house, mostly the kitchen, the bathroom and 2/3 bedrooms. We only have 3 drains (tub, bathroom sink, and kit”
“I’ve had a serious fruit fly infestation since sometime in May with no source that I can find, should I get a professional? We’ve tried traps, using green gobbler 4 different times on all the drains, we never keep trash inside, covers over all of our drinks, etc. I’ve looked high and low for a source and there is nothing. The flies do tend to conglomerate on the windows and I suspect they may be coming from outside, but I’m not seeing a ton outside either. I do see some, but it’s not like they’r”
“We just got home today from visiting family and came back to find we had accidentally left fruit rotting and now we have a maggots and HUGE gnat problem(more than we originally had from the drain 😭 what is the quickest way for us to get rid of them? “I have some in my apartment right now and can’t figure out where they’re coming from. Drains have been cleaned, I don’t see any in garbage cans, house plants have been evicted, blue light and vinegar traps are set. Two things to note: I think there are phorid flies as well as fruit flies. The trap that gets the most is in my bedroom as opposed to the kitchen? The trap in my bedroom is in front of the balcony door, could that be related? Aside from flying around my face I can’t find anywhere that”

“I have fruit flies. Likely phorid flies as well considering they don’t all have red eyes. They aren’t crazy bad but very annoying. I’ve already cleaned drains and removed the tomatoes from my counter, what else can I do? I’m not positive where they’re coming from. Apple cider vinegar with dish soap is out for the fruit flies, is there an equivalent for the phorid flies? “Help ! I tried literally everything and can’t avoid getting fruit flies (or maybe the other varies) in my kitchen trash can Got the Home Depot terro fruit fly trap, made my own traps with apple cider vinegar and dish soap, zevo light trap plug in, zapper wand tennis racket, I got a NEW step to close/open trash can in replacement of my sensor one that seemed to have a infestation, throw out the trash more often / avoid food waste on days that aren’t trash day or immediately taken out ALL of these”
“Hi all! I've got a fruit fly (possible fungus gnat?) problem that's really escalated in my downstairs washroom (bedroom is attached). I've tried apple cider vinegar traps and fly strips and they've worked so far. But I woke up this morning to a crap ton in my washroom. I had showered the night before so maybe that's what made them worse? Next step is using drain cleaner to clean the washroom sink as well as the stand up shower. All food and garbages in both the bathroom and w”
“Hello, I’ve been living in my apartment for 8 months now. It’s a big complex with its own office building and such. Since moving in, i immediately noticed a fruit fly/drain fly problem. I bought sticky traps and would regularly clean the drains with Lysol spray and the pink spray, but they are still consistently a problem. “Hey all, it's been five days and I'm currently dealing with a swarm. My property manager won't respond to my request for pest control to assess, so I've been doing what I can myself the past few days. They seem to be clustered in the kitchen mainly on the side where the sink is, so I've assumed it must be the drain because of the following below this text. I've done vinegar and baking soda down the kitchen drain, fly tape, eucalyptus oil mixed with dish soap and some wate”
“So I am dealing with a fruit fly problem. I reckon that like 99% of people they came in on bananas I bought and off we went. Well now I have them under control in my kitchen but I am seeing them other places and I am baffled as to where they are coming from. In my kitchen I wiped down all surfaces, set liquid traps (that didn’t work unfortunately so I just resorted to killing every single one I saw for a whole day), put all produce in the fridge, cleaned dishes and stored dirty ones in the dishw”
“I've done apple cider vinegar and dish soap, I've tried setting up Zevo traps. But they will. Not. Go. Away. Zevo has caught a total of 3 fruit flies. I keep all the lights off, unless I need them. But nothing. I have the Zevo traps in the areas of my room (I live in a hotel right now) with the most traffic (kitchen and bathroom), but they're doing nothing. I've taken out the trash, done my dishes regularly. But I can't get rid of these suckers. There's just more and more”
“For the past 2 months, we have had problems with fruit flies. They have progressively gotten worse over the past two weeks. I just deep cleaned our fridge and saw a pile of fruit flies at the entrance. 🤢 We have done everything like scrub the floors with peppermint and lemon oil, make sure the kitchen is clean of food and grime, clean our trashcan and hosed it out, and I’ve sat and watched where they could be coming from (I can’t find out). We even have the Zevo light right next to our sink and”

“I have been battling fruit flies for well over a month at this point. I think they rode in on some bananas I left to ripen but ever since my apartment has been unfortunately occupied by unwanted tenants. Initially, I think it was an infestation, as I caught over 40 flies very quickly after setting them for the first time. After that, I thought it would be over, but I saw another surge, so I know I didn't catch them all. After another wave of trapping and this time taking all the normal measu”
“When I say invasion, I mean invasion. I'm probably looking at 40 flies right now. So, this has been going on for probably 2 weeks now. Flocks of flies everywhere: the kitchen, the bathroom, outside, garage. We've done pretty much everything the great Google can supply: vinegar traps, disposing of all fruit or putting it in air-tight containers. They're not coming out of the drain. We empty the trash and compost every time anyone is in the kitchen. We have a Zevo trap thing. They'”
